We stopped by the Last Frontier for dinner last night -- this little rustic gem sits just outside Carbon Hill, smack dab in the middle of nowhere... and I mean that in the best possible way. It's the kind of place that feels like it should come with a story or two about someone's uncle catching a catfish "this big," told over a glass of sweet tea. The menu is loaded with hearty steaks and all the fixin's, but my wife and I went straight for the catfish -- and it did not disappoint. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and seasoned so perfectly it made me forget I ever pretended to be on a diet. We kicked things off with cheese sticks, because let's be honest -- if anything can hold life together, it's melted cheese. Inside, you get that rustic, down-home charm -- cozy tables, friendly faces, and a salad bar fit for VIPs (if only the plates weren't the size of a Tweety Bird coaster). Still, we piled them high and went back for seconds because we're not quitters. Now, the service was a little on the slow side, but hey -- when the food's this good, it's worth the wait. Besides, this hidden gem stays packed with locals, and even outsiders like us were greeted with a smile and treated like regulars. Dinner came out hot -- two golden catfish fillets and a loaded baked potato that could've been a meal all by itself. That "loaded butter mixture" they serve with it? Pure magic -- it deserves its own spot on the menu. We were so full by the end of the meal that dessert had to come home with us. Both of us went for the cheesecake, and let me tell you -- wow. That first bite felt like a cowboy in the 1800s striking gold along the last frontier. Smooth, rich, and downright heavenly -- it was the perfect ending to a great meal. All told, the Last Frontier is a solid 4-star stop in the middle of nowhere that's absolutely worth finding. Next time, we'll be back to see if the steaks can live up to the catfish -- though that's a tough act to follow!

If you're looking for the best steak you'll ever eat, look no more! This place is by far the best steak house I have ever been to. I ordered medium rare and it was cooked and seasoned perfectly (no steak sauce needed) The salad bar is fresh and has wide variety of options. If you like onion rings you will love theirs. They have plenty of room to service big parties and the staff is very welcoming. I will never go to another steak house!

It was empty on the Wednesday afternoon I was there but they say Friday nights are standing room only. I had the fried fish and shrimp combo with fries and cole slaw. Everything is lightly coated and fried when you order. Loved the tarter sauce. I wish I had tried the gumbo but that gives me a reason to go back if I am ever going by again.

I decided to venture over with a couple brave co-workers based on the name of the operation and the Facebook love this place is receiving. The place is only open a few days a week. The menu is very limited. Fish or shrimp most days. Fried or grilled. Oysters crawfish and boiled shrimp are specials served on certain days. The sides are limited to fries, slaw and beans. They recently added gumbo to the menu. Each of the three of us that ventured over today went with the combo basket with fries. They were served with a couple hush puppies. They brought our house made tarter and cocktail in big containers. The basket was a large lunch portion for around $10.00. Several shrimp, several small pieces of fish and a large portion of fries. The food was freshly prepared and served hot. The batter was very light and free fish and shrimp were well cooked. The husband and wife team that own and operate the restaurant both spoke to our group. We were obviously from out of town as they seemed to know the names of everyone else that came in the door. The female owner brought us over a sample of the gumbo before our meal arrived. The gumbo had lots of seafood in it with a deep rich flavor. It was mild for my taste but the flavor was very good. The addition of a few liberal splashes of hot sauce made for some pretty good gumbo. The hush puppies were different but good. They weren't sweet which I liked. The fries were basic crinkle cuts. I added table side Tony Chachere's to mine. The house made tarter was exceptional once I added hot sauce. Very good lunch. Quality fresh seafood. Nice people. Very reasonably priced.

So far, all is great. An hour later, a wait staff asked if we wanted drink refills. Yes please. Ten minutes later, another wait staff asked if we wanted drink refills. Yes please. Ten minutes later, I asked a third employee if we could please have refills. Eureka! Only took 90 minutes. Still no food. Tables seated after us were being served one dinner at a time. Finally, almost a full 2 hours after ordering, we were served. Steaks were good In respect to preparation and flavor, but served warm, not hot and sizzling. The wait staff told us there were big parties that had to be served, so sorry for the wait. Then another employee also told us there is only one cook, so the kitchen gets backed up. Not sure if the employees realize that both those reasons are signs of poor management. Before you seat customers, you should tell them they will not be served for a couple hours. Give us a chance to go elsewhere. I can not recommend this place, and I will not go back.

I asked the waitress if the steaks were good and she stated " the steaks here are the best in Alabama." Probably one of the worst steaks I've ever eaten. The prices were extremely too high for the quality of meat they sell. The salad bar was pretty good and I wish I would have just got that and stopped. If your wanting a good steak drive a few extra miles in the opposite direction of this place. The pic below shows the $25.00 meal. ‍
