I am very happy to update my older review today. The new salon owner kindly invited me back to Hair of the Dog to give them another shot with the new management. My youngest son and I just got back and we are happy. They had a reasonable wait time and good atmosphere. Sparky cut my boy's hair and she was very intuitive and knew how to work fast. His 'hipster cut' is now cleaned up! We greatly appreciated that they did their best to tune out the bar when the underage crowd needs a cut. The barbershop area was clean and well set up. My son was made to feel comfortable right away. Our family is thrilled that a small business in our awesome town of SJC has new management and made great changes. Way to go! read more

I picked this place solely by the cool name. I desperately needed the Oliver Platt mop to be chopped off, and was tired of the ever increasing price and decreasing quality of the conveniently close Fantastic Sams right down the street. This is located very close to the San Juan Capistrano Mission. It is attached to the Swallows Inn Saloon, and in fact there is a door joining the two places in their common wall, so you can have a beer and a bite to eat while waiting for your cut. The decor and music is very country, very cool. Rosanne was there today. She is very friendly and talkative, with some pretty interesting stories to tell. She also did a mighty fine job, trimming my hair to the exact length I specified. She even cleaned up the sideburns and goatee that were getting a bit overgrown and shabby. Overall the cut took about an hour, which is longer than I expected, but well worth the wait. They take cash only, but there is an ATM machine in the bar. Be warned though - it has a hefty $2.25 fee, so I would bring the cash. At $25 the price is comparable to Fantastic Sams, only the atmosphere, company, and quality of cut is infinitely better. Convinced him to go in and ask if they trim facial hair and she said she could and would be done in a few minutes! She was so sweet and told us some fun stories about San Juan. I go there regularly for a haircut, the stylist does a great job and is extremely attentive to detail. I always get compliments on my haircut afterwards. Just as good as those places that charge $75 a haircut. Might as well save the difference if the quality's the same. Highly recommend. read more
