Kugler Vision - Getting ready for ICL

I chose Kugler Vision after several recommendations. I had wanted vision corrective surgery for…read moreyears but was waiting for my prescription to stabilize. I decided to go with them because of their quality care and professionalism. Every step of the process went smoothly. The process started with a consultation, during which several tests and examinations were completed. Following this, the team discussed the diagnosis and treatment options. I found out that I was a better candidate for ICL surgery then for lasik, and Kugler is one of the top ICL centers in the nation. They do have payment plans available. The day of the procedure went well. Staff makes sure to keep you as comfortable as possible. I'm so thankful for my vision, and it has been such a gift to be able to wake up with good sight. Highly recommend!

Kugler got me from 20:400 to 20:25 without glasses, and I couldn't be happier. From the moment you walk through the door, they genuinely care about you as a customer/patient. I was a bit uneasy going in for the procedure, and they calmed my nerves and gave me a valium to help me calm down before the procedure. Procedure then went off without a hitch and I was reading road signs without glasses on the ride home. Free fresh cookies and beverages in the waiting room is a nice touch too.

I was diagnosed with cataracts in October and my regular doctor referred me to Vance Thompson…read moreVision for a surgical consult. The office is very professionally run and my initial consultation was extremely thorough using state of the art equipment. After reviewing the test results, the surgeon came in and gave me detailed information on my surgical options. Once I made my decision, I was given cost estimates, broken down by what insurance would pay and what I would have to pay. I was then scheduled for surgery. I've never used contacts since I couldn't stand the thought of putting things on my eyes, so obviously I was nervous about getting surgery on my eyes. But the initial surgery on my left eye went extremely well and the surgical experience was actually interesting. I went back the next day for my right eye and that went well too. The entire staff was very professional and caring, and I got hot cookies both days after surgery to make sure I tolerated the anesthetic. I selected lens that would correct my astigmatism and am so glad I did. Today I went to my regular doctor for follow up, and I now have 20/20 distance vision without glasses. I've worn glasses to correct my astigmatism since 1977 so having my distance vision back is fantastic. The overall experience at Vance Thompson Vision was first class. Besides the important medical aspects, they had a great waiting area for my wife with free cookies and a coffee machine that makes a tasty cappuccino.

The surgeon, nurses and staff were amazing with my mom's cataract surgery. Highly recommend!!!read more

I saw Dr Cleaver, who was kind, gentle, and used a program to show me exactly the size and location of the scratches on my eye (there were 2), after he measured them. He then put a contact on my eye to protect it as it healed. Oh, I should mention here the lovely numbing drops they used. Those were fantastic! I ended up calling the office before close because my eye hurt much worse than before I had the contact placed. The tech I talked with asked me if I was using the drops Dr Cleaver gave me - she mentioned 2 drops, but I'd only been given one. She said "the gel drops?" And I said, no. Should I have some? She said no. Turns out, yes, that would have made my experience significantly less painful. I don't wear glasses and therefore have never worn contacts. The next morning I called to be seen early because I was in excruciating pain throughout the night and still that morning. (My appt was at 4) and they got me right in, which I was thankful for yet again! I went to the other location to see Dr Cleaver who was again great, and the tech I saw made the whole experience way more pleasant. Dr. Cleaver said my eye was very dry which was contributing a lot to the pain. He removed the contact, his bedside manner was great especially when I couldn't stop twitching haha. He used a more dull instrument on my eye so he wouldn't poke my eye (big YAY for that) and set up a follow up so I'd be able to see a dr if for any reason my eye wasn't okay. But I canceled because it was. His instructions were great, other than the lack of instruction for the eyeball that had never used a contact before. Oh, and the wait was very long the first time and pretty long the 2nd, which contributes to the star off. But I recommend and would go again without question if needed.

They were able to get me in for a consultation pretty quickly, and I felt comfortable that they were gonna tell me exactly what to expect and if I was truly a good candidate for the procedure. I had a ton of questions after I left my consultation, and the person helping me, Mandy, was SO communicative and helpful. She helped ease my concerns. Once I decided to book, the my we're flexible with my availability. I also wanted to wait until the following year so I could save up my HSA, and they were flexible with that pricing. Once I got in the operating room, it went so much more smoothly than expected. I think there was a nurse there just to hold my hand the whole time. The doctor had a calming presence and he explained exactly what was happening at each step, down to the seconds each step would take. I was done quickly and could see! I saw them the next day for my 24 hour checkup and when everything looked great, I was good to go. All my follow ups have been with my regular optometrist. I currently still have 20/10 vision, which I never even had with glasses or contacts!

This is someone who came highly recommended by multiple people...friends and medical professionals alike. I hadn't taken more than two steps into his office when he started asking me if I was taking vitamin D. I told him no, so he proceeded to tell me that people with more pigmentation need to supplement. "That's why there are so many Blacks dying of Covid!" I think my blank stare and lack of responsiveness indicated that I was not appreciating this conversation. He responded to my silence by urging me to "look it up on the internet!" Maybe assuming that I wouldn't do that, he printed off a ten page article by the neurosurgeon, Dr. Blaylock. If you google Dr. Blaylock, you'll see that he is described as a neurosurgeon turned conspiracy theorist. He has an anti-mask stance and says that masks actually hurt the healthy. I simply wanted to get my kids' eyes checked. I didn't ask for his assessment on my chances of getting Covid based off of my pigmentation. I definitely didn't ask for his conspiracy theorist papers...and all of this in front of my kids. My husband called to complain. The person he spoke to wasn't surprised by his behavior and suggested we try someone else in the office. We never went back.

It was always a fine experience, until I went to another opthalmologist for a second opinion 20 years later about getting a lens implant after he told me he wouldn't do it. The main issue I left was due to being an adult sitting alone in a small waiting room full of kids while waiting for my appointment was not ideal. So even after asking the second dr. twice whether he was absolutely sure it was feasible to do the implant, he said it absolutely was and proceeded with the operation. A year later on my annual visit, he tells me that I need to return to Dr. Troia, apologize, offer up my right eye, and that he can't see me anymore. Also stated that Dr. Troia knows a lot of people. Well that's all great and dandy, but when you consider the 4 pillars of ethics, each and every one of those pillars might as well be nonexistent in the eyes of this group of "Doctors". Since then I went to a different opthalmologist and was given the worst care possible while they trumped up the godhood of Dr. Troia and the other Dr. I had the lens replacement surgery with. Coincidentally these last 2 Drs. gave a completely bogus prescription that was completely off by more than 2.00 in power. I'm at a loss for words. Next option is lawsuit for all 3 for malpractice.

Beautiful office, very tech forward, and super lovely staff. From the start, I had a pretty great…read moreexperience at this office. I had to switch from an office I already really loved due to moving so I was nervous. The checkin person was incredibly friendly, the initial person I worked with during my exam was as well, and the doctor was engaging and thorough. I had zero complaints and was ready to leave the office to write this as a five star review.... So why 3 stars? I work in the insurance field. I understand the importance of taking ownership of your own benefits and not relying on a medical office to provide you with the information about what coverage you have. For this reason, I checked my vision benefits before my appointment and knew that I had a $10 co pay for the exam and a $0 copay for my contact lens fit/follow up. I've had the same plan for several years and that's always been what I pay but it's still good to check in case coverage changes. At check in I was offered a $39 photo of my eye in lieu of traditional dilation and I agreed as I hate the idea of getting my eyes dilated. For those doing the math, I'm now up to $49 due for my appointment. At checkout, I was told my total was $153. That's a difference of $104. I paid it and then went to my car to make sure I didn't misread something on my coverage. Nope, $0 exam copay, $10 lens copay.... I go back in to ask the person at check out. She explained to me that I had a "premium" contact lens fitting which is only discounted at 10% per my plan. I did see this on my benefits but have never been charged for a premium fitting so didn't think it applied to me. I'll say this, if I wasn't one to know things about insurance coverage I may have just accepted that as "just the way it is." I could have easily accepted that I got a "premium" fitting because they used extra technology that felt high end. But that's not what premium means. When I asked what the difference is, the person at check out said she's been asked before but doesn't really know. She offered to find out from another person in the back. She was very kind about the whole thing and happily went to ask and brought back a print out explaining the difference. I was told someone would call me because the person she tried to ask wasn't available. There was a lot of vision jargon on the printout that I didn't understand so I had to go home to look up the meanings. Basically it means this.... If you have regular bad vision like not being able to read a street sign far away, you don't need a premium exam. Premium is for premium lenses: astigmatism, multifocal or monovision lenses, post-surgical lenses, etc. I was called the next morning and told that they'd made an error in coding and was overcharged by mistake. They had already initiated the refund to my card for the additional $104 that wasn't truly due. Great! Glad that's squared away. However, my 3 stars still stand. It's 1000% possible that it was an honest mistake. These things happen. It's also possible that it wasn't a mistake and they're up charging for the reasons I stated above. Because if I wasn't me and heard premium exam I might have just agreed to paying it because I could see how the extra technology might make it "premium." Ultimately, I couldn't confidently refer my grandparents to this office without feeling like I needed to check their receipts after every visit.
