Last time I went I arrived at the bar as the barman was serving a customer in front of me. Once he had finished serving his customer he headed back up the bar to begin mixing a cocktail jug. After a full minute of being ignored I asked could I order some food to be asked if I could 'hang on' as he was serving someone (there was no-one else besides me stood at the bar). When he eventually came to take my food order, he left half way through to go and talk to another member of staff further down the bar, again with no explanation. When he returned I ordered salmon noodles and chicken penne pasta. Before I could pay, the other member of staff asked what I was ordering, and informed me that there was no pasta available. I ordered a Que Pasa Club sandwich instead and paid the bill. Ten minutes later the barman came over to the table to inform us that there was no salmon noodle dish available either. Eventually he had to call the other member of staff over to explain to us exactly what we could order. Items not available were: any salads, burgers, noodles, stir fry, fajitas, tuna, pasta or paella. We ordered a pizza and were then told that there would be a 45 minute wait as there were four other tables who had placed orders for Tapas before us, and these would take a long time. When the food arrived, the pizza had to be sent back as it was cold, and the club sandwich was the most appalling, un-appetising thing I have ever seen soggy toast, one slice of tomato in the whole sandwich, only two slices containing lettuce, and then it was tiny pieces of red lettuce which looked like it had come from the bottom of the bag. When I mentioned this to the manager I was informed that there was no salad left, and asked whether I would like a free drink as they had no lettuce. To be honest, the way the question was asked made us both feel as though we were being petty for mentioning it. Despite the fact that the staff did apologise, it did not feel genuine, and one member of staff constantly mentioned what a hard day and what a long shift he'd had as he'd had to work extra because they'd been so busy. Unfortunately by this point I didn't feel much sympathy!

I mean, I was getting some serious Mexican food withdrawals and needed a fix. Wahaca scratched my itch straight away and then some - the food here is absolutely gorgeous! Mind, it isn't 100% authentic. It isn't the greasy, heavy, but utterly indulgent Mexican food I'm used to. Wahaca is more of Mexican cuisine with a modern twist but they do pay some pretty accurate homage to the spices and flavours of Mexico; they even apparently have a trusted source in Mexico for certain ingredients. ~ Atmosphere: Wahaca is sneakily massive. When I first walked in, I thought it seemed pretty tiny but there are actually 3 different floors for dining with the top floor having a stocked bar for a bit of lounging as well. Because their toilets are on the top floor, they actually have an ELEVATOR in the restaurant! ~ Customer Service: Really friendly. The waitress asked if we needed any help with figuring out what to order from the menu but since I was already really familiar with Mexican cuisine I didn't need it. However, rest assured if you're new to Mexican food the waitresses are happy to help (don't feel embarrassed to ask!). Food came out pretty quickly and they have a unique system where you can pay using wi-fi as well. ~ Food: The absolute highlight. My partner and I wanted to skip the "ah"s and "um"s with deciding what to order, so we just went for the Wahaca selection for "adventurers" - £32.50 worth of food. It came with: * 2 Salmon Sashimi Tostadas * 3 Pork Pibil Tacos * 1 Large Chipotle Chicken Quesadilla (cut in half) * 2 Pea & Mint Empanadas * Frijoles w/ Chorizo * Broccoli w/ Green Goddess Dressing * Grilled Corn on the Cob * Churros y Chocolate The highlight for the meal for me was DEFINITELY the Salmon Sashimi Tostadas - they were absolutely perfect and the salmon was incredibly fresh! I regret not ordering more! To be honest, when I first looked at the menu for the taster plate I was skeptical about how much I'd enjoy a lot of the other stuff. I thought the broccoli, corn, and frijoles would be a tad boring but I'm so glad I was proven wrong. I never thought that I'd be enjoying just a plate of broccoli so much but it was perfectly cooked and went very well with the dressing. Normally, I'm not a fan of corn on the cob either (I just find them a pain to eat!) but again, Wahaca managed to take something I normally don't like and turn it into something magical. The sauce on the corn was flawless. My least favourite part of the meal were the tacos, but that's only because I've had better (not fair though seeing as I'm from California). However, they were still very delicious. --- The only downside to Wahaca is that I feel it's very pricey and you don't really feel too full at the end either. After we finished our meal, my partner and I were still feeling a bit hungry. I would say that Wahaca isn't great when you're looking for a filling dinner (unless you're willing to pay a lot) but fantastic if you're looking to appreciate food and enjoy different flavours. All the staff here were absolutely wonderful. Our waiter did get an order wrong, but it's fine since it was just his first day on the job and the staff were really accommodating through getting the order right and giving the wrong version for free! It was a bit of a wait for our food as well, but again this can be attributed to the restaurant being massively full on opening day. I'm sure that all those hiccups would be smoothed out in the future after the staff get a bit more experience under their belt. ~ Food: The food was very impressive and lovely altogether. I love the fact that there are little booths backing into the walls like snugs, filled with cushions. I love the food, but more than anything I love the Quorn burrito. Rarely do I find establishments that serve Quorn as part of vegetarian meals, but this Quorn burrito is in a world of its own. Quorn, peppers, onions and Mexican spices, wrapped in a flour tortilla, then baked with cheese on top until crisp, piled high with salad and spicy potato wedges. As well as this you can get a variety of pub grub and lighter bites too, like baked potatoes and sandwiches, or hearty main meals including a belly-busting burger. The drinks are just fine and dandy and the atmosphere's really enjoyable. But really, I'm always there for the decor and the Quorn burrito. Both put a big smile on my face. Hey, and the Greek salad I had today wasn't bad either. Plus their onion rings have been unrivalled thus far. Awesome.

The first time I visited here was last winter and lordy lord was it freezing! It was below 10 degrees outside and about minus 4 inside. The last time was at Valentines with my lovely and was a lot better, especially warmth wise. We were met by a compere that had the cheek to say there may not be any tables available, after letting him know that over half the restaurant was empty I wouldn't think that was a problem. No one likes to be made to look silly and he wasn't very friendly after that. That was the last problem with unfriendly staff as our water was so delightful. He did really make our day with his upbeat personality and we ended up having a good laugh with him. I do believe that this Chiquito does take aways too, which includes the full menu. I'm not sure the Cardiff Centre one does that, don't quote me on that though.

The menu itself is stocked full of 'Mexican' dishes, although typically these consist of the more Westernised meals like fajitas and nachos, rather than genuinely authentic Mexican cuisine. Perfectly edible and tasty, the meals aren't anything to write home about. I do enjoy Mexican food particularly, but I wouldn't rank this as much higher than anything I could prepare for myself at home. Who knows, maybe i'm just a great chef.
