Unfortunately for my bathroom scales, I've sampled food from pretty much every establishment on that stretch of road. I cannot recommend more highly than Carlos Pizza. Carlos has a vast menu of takeaway foods that will satisfy any taste. They offer meal deals or singular items at standard prices that you'd expect to find in any takeaway. If you're walking home from a night out, or you just want to order in, the service is friendly and prompt. Home delivery on a busy night takes around 45 minutes, which is pretty standard for an independent takeaway. At least that's the time that they quote you. The delivery guy often turns up a little before the 45. I'm a clock-watcher when it comes to food, so trust me on this. If you decide to grab something to eat in person, the service is always fast and friendly. Despite the numbers of customers they receive on a weekend, you can be in and out in around ten minutes with whatever it is you've chosen. If the wait does take a little longer, it's no big problem as the owner and his employees are always good for a little banter. Carlos is a takeaway, so you shouldn't expect a Micheline 5 Star meal. However, the food is of an excellent standard for the style of food at the price you pay. The meal deals they offer are excellent for groups of friends or a particularly hungry solo diner. A definite favourite with the locals, Carlo has a great rapport with his customers. This is evident from the broad smile you get when you enter and the loyalty that the patrons show. If you want a takeaway that won't leave you feeling guilty and unpleasant, then you could do a lot worse than a trip to Carlos. I would recommend the cheesy crust as an addition to any pizza.

Before ordering, we were asked multiple times about any allergies and were offered a gluten free menu. Dinner consisted of Bill's Fish Pie and the 'Nduja & Burrata Meatballs. Both dishes came out steaming hot. The fish pie was hearty, with a thick layer of the mash potatoes. The cream sauce was rich, and made the dish wonderfully warm for a damp evening. The meatballs were simply amazing. The creaminess of the burrata mellowed the nduja seasoning.

This is not to say that I don't appreciate high design, I do! But I would hate for everywhere to look the same. Besides which, corporate homogenisation of interior design is usually little better than appalling. Sports pubs, family pubs with their awful carveries on Sundays, fast food chains and supermarket cafes all make my skin creep! Give me Puccini any day of the week! Their mural may not have been painted with the skill of the Sistine Chapel, but I bet they thought long and hard about it, and chose a subject dear to their hearts. Yes, I guess it would be true to say I have disparaged it somewhat, but that's simply because it is not to my taste. I don't profess to be an arbiter of the urbane, I simply offer my opinion for what it's worth. And, I like things that are naff in the way I perceive the art to be naff at Puccini's. It's in the same block as John Lewis and opposite the Marriott Hotel. The décor is done pretty well: one side has a wall of glass (as do all the premises here) but they've softened it with their shop, selling pasta, meringues etc at the entrance area, which is all prettily done in pastels. Inside, the main restaurant is spacious, with high ceilings, and the overall minimalist effect is softened with wood. So far so good. We both had mushroom bruschetta to start, followed by Penne Gardiniera and Spaghetti Carbonara, and we went for soft drinks as it was a bit early in the evening to be drinking (I'm getting to that sort of age). The bruschetta was fine - toasted bread, with a mixture of sautéed mushrooms, spinach, garlic, and quite a lot of chilli. This was quite tasty, and not too heavy, but some might find it a bit spicy. I've had their Penne Giardiniera in other branches before, which has finely sliced courgettes, chilli flakes, garlic, cheese and fried spinach balls. The latter taste quite salty, but remind me of my Mum's stuffing balls (which is why I'm fond of it). They'd overcooked the courgettes a bit, but the taste was nice. My friend's Carbonara was less successful. This version lacks the creamy sauce one normally associates with carbonara, and is made simply with eggs, Grana Padano cheese, guanciale (pork cheek lardons), and seasoned with black pepper. Arguably, this makes it more authentic, which would be fine, except the guanciale were cooked to a dark brown colour and were so hard, my friend struggled to eat them. He also found it rather tasteless - hence losing a star. Service was fine - efficient rather than friendly - and the bill came to £43 including a tip. I don't think I'd rush back on that experience, as there are other places in the area to try next time.

The Cardiff Carluccio's is located by the new library on the Hayes, and together with its neighbours Gourmet Burger kitchen and Wagamama, turns a once downtrodden area of Cardiff into a buzzing metropolitan spot. The moment I entered Carluccios I was greeted by a friendly Italian waitress who was more than happy to answer my many questions about the restaurant, and seemed as excited as me that Cardiff finally has a Carluccio's. For those unfamiliar with this Café, Carluccio's specialies in good Italian food such as pasta, Panini's, salads, and seafood at not too high a price. The atmosphere is relaxed but still retains a touch of class, and I was pleased to see that the Cardiff branch already appears to be quite popular. I had Pasta Con Funghi, and was surprised to find it to be even more delicious than when I last ate it at their South Kensington café (Cardiff obviously has a very good chef). The cafe isn't particularly large, but neither is it too small, and there are tables outside which I imagine will become increasingly popular as summer approaches. If you unfortunately don't have time to sit and eat, there is a takeaway option for Panini's, cakes, coffee and croissants (these in particular are very yummy). What's more there is a small shop, where you can purchase cookbooks, oils, Italian biscuits, and the most incredible pasta (I usually mass buy it when in London, so this is very handy for me). In addition to this you can also buy fresh cheeses, oils, fish, breads and many other deli items (does this place get better?).
