    Review Highlights - Puccini

I know they offer other dishes besides tapas here, but that's all I've ever had and it's all I go back for.

I can never visit enough Greek restaurants truth be told. I may have mentioned this before but Feta…read morecheese is the greatest invention. Feeling light that day I decided to go for the greek salad. Ripe red tomatoes with beautiful leafy type things drizzled in olive oil. It's clear I don't have salad often but by Jove's it was tasty, a word I thought I wouldn't use in my life. The staff were fantastic and had a great laugh with them as I tried my very broken Greek with them.

When trying new foods, I find there are two different modes of thought regarding how to go about…read moreit. The first, possibly more sensible option, is to go to a restaurant that has been recommended by a trusted friend, or to a restaurant that is known for catering to people unaccustomed to the cuisine. This is certainly safer, as you're trying foods you already have an idea on, and probably know you'll enjoy. The second, stupider and my preferred method, is to drive passed a place, say "I've never eaten that kind of food before. Let's go there tomorrow!" and refuse to hear any arguement on the subject. What this lacks in common sense, it more than makes up for in excitement. You may wander into a restaurant and having one of the best eating experiences of you life! Or you may have chosen to eat at a poorly advertised dry cleaners, and end up embarrassing your girlfriend and the owners of the establishment. Normally though, my method serves me well more often than not. Aphrodite was one of the occasions when it didn't so much. I found the food a little bland and uninspiring. However, I have since discovered that it may be because I don't like Greek food. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great though, so if Greek cuisine is more your thing, you'll have a great time.

For this purpose, however, its City Road location isn't ideal, being busy and rather uninspiring. If you're going to inhale smoke from a water pipe, however, you can hardly get worked up over a few exhaust fumes - but the view could be better. I've recently noticed a sign on their window saying they have a rear garden, so that may be more pleasant for al fresco coffees and a smoke? Appealing to the local student population, Sahara also do baguettes and cold drinks.

There's terrace seating out front and a great garden out the back, as well as plenty of seating in the main café itself. The staff are really friendly, and all share a great sense of humour, making a night out here a pleasant and relaxing one. The Mediterranean food isn't half bad, and being supplemented with things like baguettes, there's something to suit everyone's tastes. This is definitely the place to chill and experiment with shisha if you are so inclined. I love the waft of strawberry flavoured tobacco that infuses the cool night air in the garden at the rear. Top marks to this friendly bunch of affable people... and because of their good nature I rate them the best shisha bar in town!

I actually only tried out this place for delivery because Mezza Luna was unfortunately unavailable (I'm guessing they didn't have any drivers since it was a NYE) but already had my mind set on Mediterranean food. While definitely not as good as my beloved Mezza Luna, Saray is still a decent option to try out. -- Incik (Kleftico) -- £9.00 "Oven baked lamb shank with mixed vegetables, served with mash potatoes." Unfortunately, Saray forgot the mashed potatoes part so I just ate it with some rice ordered with another dish. Still, the lamb was very lovely. I'm a huge fan of lamb shank and Saray definitely does it right! Beautifully tender with lovely sauce; the onions and carrots were succulent and sweet as well. Huge portions and a filling dish well worth the money. -- Kalamar -- £3.50 This is battered calamari, and very delicious (though I may be biased since I'm a huge calamari fan). Just the right texture and taste. Wonderful! -- Hummus & Bread -- £2.00 The hummus was just standard hummus, nothing amazing. But what WAS amazing was the beautiful bread! Huge with toasted sesames on top, it had a fantastic texture! I'm usually not crazy about bread and can't imagine it being really good, but Saray definitely proved me wrong there. Seriously, try the bread. --- Overall I definitely am impressed with Saray. Everything I've tried was very tasty and came at affordable prices.

This may have something to do with the fact that Troy is a restaurant and not just a take away. They serve Turkish and Mediterranean food, as well as the most refreshing tea in the world! The place is run by really friendly people who take a pride in what they do. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and it's a place where a lot of the locals pledge their allegiance. Business is not as brisk as it used to be a few years ago. There are now too many restaurants and takeaways doing the same thing, providing too much competition along the City Road. Troy was one of the first, and thankfully they haven't lost the passion for what they do. A kebab will set you back about £6.00, but there's enough food for two people, making them really well priced for what you get.

The doner kebab is exactly like any you'd find down the street but competes well with Adonis kebab takeaway.
