A modicum of caution kept me from doing so and only decreased my enjoyment of the place marginally. Mercado Hidalgo is that bustling market that sells pretty much every sort of (Mexico-adjacent) food one can imagine as well as a wide assortment of other things. It's picturesque, stimulating, and colorful and I'm not sure we have anything equivalent in the US. All the more reason to visit. I walked out with Mexican candy (a safe bet) and a brain full of images of this large place knowing that I'll settle - a bit sadly - for a state-side Shrimp Cocktail now that I'm back at home.

You can't pass up getting some Mexican chocolates in Mexico, since, after all, Mexico gave the world chocolate. The lady helping us super patient, friendly, and great. She knew every little chocolate they had on display, and how to describe the flavor. She was also key in recommending which of their chocolates paired with mezcal they also sell, and you know what, she was absolutely correct in the pairings. The mezcal I bought here was also excellent and the real deal, not mass marketed; about half way between a moonshined mezcal and a commercialized one. If you love chocolate and enjoy mezcal, what better store than one in Guanajuato that sells authentic quality artisanal products of the region. A nice experience.

There are great meat and meatless options here. I went with papas and nopales, while my husband went with chicken and beef. Also on the recommendation of our Airbnb host, we both tried the Boing! juice in mango and it was delicious. It's made with real fruit, so there's nothing artificial in it. Well worth a taste! Our food was made fresh and came out fairly quickly and was a perfect little meal to start the afternoon. We'll definitely come back during our next visit.

Located on the second floor right in front of the park where the mariachi plays and next to the iconic Teatro Juárez, this spot offers not only fantastic food but also one of the best views in town. Picture a charming, rustic setting overlooking the lively street scene below. La Trattoria blends Italian and Mexican flavors beautifully. I had the tuna appetizer and shrimp tacos both absolutely delicious and full of fresh, bold flavor. Others at our table enjoyed a variety of pasta and seafood dishes, and everyone left impressed. The drinks were also a hit they offer a solid mix of cocktails, from traditional cantaritos to crisp martinis. Whether you're in the mood for something a little different or just want to soak up the atmosphere with a great meal and a view, La Trattoria is a must. We'll definitely be back!
