Can I tell you how badly I wanted to sit down at Mercado Hidalgo, a giant el cóctel de camarones in front of me, along with 100's of bottles of hot sauce? A modicum of caution kept me from doing so and only decreased my enjoyment of the place marginally. Mercado Hidalgo is that bustling market that sells pretty much every sort of (Mexico-adjacent) food one can imagine as well as a wide assortment of other things. It's picturesque, stimulating, and colorful and I'm not sure we have anything equivalent in the US. All the more reason to visit. I walked out with Mexican candy (a safe bet) and a brain full of images of this large place knowing that I'll settle - a bit sadly - for a state-side Shrimp Cocktail now that I'm back at home. read more

As you walk in the first stand to the right their carnitas was delicious. The third stand to the left they sell delicious cafe de la olla.

Whenever we travel to Mexico, we always allow ourselves a morning or two to explore the local mercado. Most mercado are indoors but some are outdoors. Mercados are where locals come to get what they need for the day. Yes shopping very day. It's not what's done in the USA, but a lot of cultures shop daily. Their fridges are about half the size of your typical fridge / freezer found at Lowes or Sears. You'll found produce, cheese, meats, fruits, spices, and other items. Some vendors sell trinkets and electronics. For the newbie shoppers it's expected to haggle. Don't be afraid. If you're a local or regular, you would get a discount so don't be afraid to haggle. If you look like a tourist, more than likely, you're going to get a inflated quote so there's not harm in haggling just don't be insulting with your offer back. I marvel and quite enjoy this type pf shopping. There's something romantic about it. Making your list, going to see Rafael at the produce stand to get your veggies then see Marta for your fruits and then going to see Carmen for your meats and cheeses. Only buying what you need for the day's meals is so comfortable for me and when I return to the USA it's so foreign for me to fill up my cart at WINCO with two weeks worth of groceries. It doesn't matter where you visit, but make a point to explore and visit a Mercado or open air market. Let your mind wander and be in awe of the amount of hustle it takes to be a local vendor and appreciate their craft and knowledge. read more

Walked through here during the weekday and it was busy with locals, but not packed. The goods for sale are cheap and mostly mass produced, so nothing caught my fancy. The food stalls were busy, but I was not hungry at the time so really didn't get to try anything. I think the sight of flies flitting around the produce and the dining area really turned me off. Plenty of street vendors outside the Mercado for other food options. The building itself is beautiful from afar, though, and makes for a captivating landmark in panoramic pictures from other rooftops, especially near dusk. read more

This place was great! You had all types of traditional Mexican stands in the middle and shopping around the outside. While everything is slow here in Mexico in terms of service it gives you a second to slow life down and enjoy things around you. Try a 'Cocktel de Camarrones' at one of the booths. Yummy yummy yummy! I returned several times (so far) for this treat. It is a generous fresh shrimp in a cocktail sauce with avocados on top. There is just a slight sweet/tangy flavor. I add salsa to take it up a notch. I also grocery shop here. You can buy anything from ajo (garlic) to zanahorias (carrots) and everything in between. Fresh Basil, chicharrones, granola, chicken, mexican wedding cookies, a purse, a side of beef, soap, dried spices, many fruits, veggies, nuts, candies, clothes, household items, etc. The people are friendly, the dogs are hungry, the prices are ridiculously cheap. The building was constructed to be a train depot, I am told. It is an amazing place. Be sure and look up if you are inside. read more

Went here during a weekday to grab a bite while on vacation. Many vendors that offer anything from food, clothing, produce and candy. People are very helpful but be careful. This is a place where locals go shop but we did notice a young group of guys scoping people out and taxing vendors. We did witness a younger guy harass a vendor. Looked like they were working in a split group to pick-pocket as well. No security or cops in the area. Very nice place but just BE CAREFUL. I won't be coming back. read more

really neat indoor "mercado". now by mercado it isn't what it's made out to be, it's not set up like a farmer's market. what it is is there are 2 levels, first level is occupied by a huge variety of food stalls, the "mezzanine" is occupied by a lot of souvenir vendors. we passed by a lot of really delicious looking food but didn't dare try them... and on my way back home i asked a hispanic visitor visiting her friend in guanajuato if she would eat at hidalgo and she said no LOL. so there you have it. we didn't chance it, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't! i'm sure the food is delicious! read more

My husband and I visited Mercado Hidalgo just after breakfast. We purchased many items at this location because it was a nice, relaxed environment, compared to the hustle and bustle of the streets. We weren't bombarded with people trying to sell us their wares every few steps. We were actually given the opportunity to shop at a relaxed pace, set by ourselves for once. The huge building seemingly offered ample space, and didn't give me a feeling of claustrophobia while walking through the aisles. It was a wonderful way to spend a morning. read more

Really cool place with great food. I got a torta de carnitas from one of the many stands in the mercado. I went with the place that had the biggest line and I was not disappointed. Great carnitas bread and salsas. They also gave me a free taco while I waited so I can try it. read more

Love this market. Very friendly and honest vendors. We even had breakfast here which was very cheap and tasty! If you're looking for souvenirs or gifts for friends and family back home, this place can't be beat! Also, the outside pink quarry facade of this building has an interesting history. Originally built as a train station for the city of Antwerp, Belgium, it was acquired by former Mexican President Porfirio Díaz and gifted got the city of Guanajuato for use as a mercado. Very cool! read more

Worth checking out especially if you want to buy a trinket or a little gift for someone. Definitely try & eat inside.

Plenty of choices. Historical building and nice people. I'd recommend coming here before going elsewhere.
