Even before Jamie W and I arrived, I knew a trip to San Miguel de Allende would not be complete…read morewithout a visit to this classic churro cafe. It was the place that chef Pati Jinich proclaimed as the best churro purveyor in town on her PBS TV series. Located just a block east of the city's social hub, Jardín Allende, the cafe was quite chaotic on early Saturday evening. No surprise there was a lengthy queue. While it was moving quickly, the menu was nowhere to be seen. By the time we got to the counter, I just improvised our order on the spot. We went with a couple of the MX$120 French Chocolate sets which afforded us both a Hot Chocolate and a Cajeta-Flled Churro. We added two MX$11 Plain Churros just because we wanted to try their signature item. The advantage lies in the freshness. The churros come right out of the fryer and into the bowl dusted with sugar and cinnamon. The contrast between the crispy, sweet exterior and the soft dough is what makes the churro stand out. The cajeta added sweet indulgence, but truth be told, the plain version was decadent enough on its own (Photo 9). This was especially true when we dipped the churros into the rich, piping hot chocolate (Photo 8). Luckily, we were able to snag a cafe table that became available. It was only when we sat down that we noticed the full extent of their menu which includes empanadas, enchiladas, and Mexican breakfast plates. We also saw all the framed posters and magazine covers on the walls and realized they all featured the owner, famous soap opera actress Margarita Gralia, Mexico's answer to Susan Lucci. FOOD / DRINK - 5 stars...like really fresh donuts but the hot chocolate is the most essential ingredient AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...chaos but evocative SERVICE - 4 stars...fast and cordial amid the chaos TOTAL - 4 stars...trying the churros is a must...just takes effort to get them RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende? Open since the 1920's, this shop makes for an ideal neighbor with a vast selection of gourmet chocolates, in particular, a treasure trove of truffles. However, it was pretty balmy that day. Consequently Jamie W and I were particularly drawn to the gelato choices. Since we had dinner plans, the MX$70 one-scoop cups suited us just fine as sweet appetizers. Jamie picked the Hazelnut (Photo 10), while I went for the Rum Truffle (Photo 9). Both provided brief respites of creamy delight. The gelato provides a worthy extension to their chocolate offering in a fine cafe setting. GELATO - 4 stars...creamy goodness on a warm afternoon AMBIANCE - 4.5 stars...spacious with cafe seating SERVICE - 4 stars...polite TOTAL - 4 stars...definitely worth a stop for either a truffle or gelato RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende? And I was blown away by how reasonable the prices are. On top of all this, they made me the best latte I've had in Mexico and their baked goods were fantastic.
