It's taken me almost three years to write this review. My beloved cat Sophie had been sick for a long time and I thought she just had food allergies or something. I took her to a local vet here in Laveen a handful of times and they'd barely touch her because she was kind of wild at the vet, like most cats. Anyway, she started to deteriorate quickly and finally I made the longer drive to this vet. Within seconds, he felt her body and told us she had a tumor. An xray and ultrasound I requested confirmed this and unfortunately she was not able to be saved. Like any pet owner I was full of grief, guilt and regret. To this day I feel responsible and wish I had taken her to a CAT VETERINARIAN from the start, specifically Larkspur Cat Clinic. I still have three cats and despite the long drive, under no circumstances will I ever take my cats anywhere else for anything. This guy knows cats. He's like a cat mechanic/whisperer. How could he find out what was wrong with Sophie by feeling her body for a few seconds while this other vet couldn't after multiple visits? To me there's no excuse and I know it can be complicated but they could've recommended she go somewhere else if they didn't know!!! If you love your cat, like REALLY love your cat (as I did and do), GO HERE AND DON'T GO ANYWHERE ELSE. As far as the cats, I brought a 10 year old rescue in, with a myriad of undiagnosed health issues, and one by one they successfully addressed all of my cat's very complicated medical needs. Dr. Smith's skill and calming demeanor made anything possible, even in our darkest moments. Sarah and Sierra are the heart and soul of the operation. They deserve just as much credit as Dr. Smith. She is a gorgeous cat, but she mats up badly. They did a beautiful job, and when they were done a received a very nice phone call detailing the results of her exam, and they didn't even have to sedate her! Highly recommend! read more

We brought out 4 year old girl to see Justin after she stopped eating. Was told she was yellow and was having a liver issue due to not eating. He recommended a feeding tube be placed in her esophagus. We agreed and had the procedure done. 24 hours after getting her home she died in our arms suddenly. Justin couldn't give an explanation and just kinda threw his arms up and said these things happen. 4 years old... passing 24 hours after a surgery with an 80% success rate. We took her body to a local ER for animals and spoke with the vet. We could tell he was avoiding telling us the vet was at fault, but gave us a list of things Justin and Larkspur did that made zero sense to him given her condition. We are now dealing with a grieving family and no answers. The ER sent a card and followed up the next day to check up knowing how hard it was on our family. Not Larkspur. Only call we got was from Justin downplaying any fault from him and wishing us the best.... Lastly, this whole situation cost us upwards of $5000. This vet is VERY expensive and comparable with the emergency clinics. In my opinion, Justin is a very heartless person. I strongly feel something happened behind the closed doors while she was in surgery thay resulted in her passing 24 hours later... Save yourself the heartbreak of this cash grab operation. I wish everyday we never took our baby to Larkspur. read more

The best clinic I've ever been to! The fact that it's cat-only makes everything 90% less stressful, but everyone working here is also extremely sweet and fantastic at their jobs! Very affordable compared to anywhere else I've been I've recently taken in a third kitty accidentally on purpose; Marble, who is........ basically feral He wants nothing to do with humans, and refuses ANY touch at the moment. The thing is, he loves my cats and they've bonded heavily ever since Marble decided he lives in my backyard. Various other concerns led me to trick Marble into the house so I could get him to a vet at least and ensure he's fixed. Of course I took him to Larkspur and they were SO great and understanding. Marble got sedated, fixed, all his shots, trimmed and cleaned, and sent right home that day! Today was Marble's booster shot appointment, and I was nervous since he's adjusted well to the house...... but still hates human touch. The vets were sooo patient with me and Marble and explained all of our options-- we of course opted to sedate him again to avoid unnecessary stress. Despite the extra procedure time, the whole appointment was very quick! Now he's back home and healthy with his friends, and I'm excited to....... not have to move Marble anywhere for a year hopefully But I'm also very excited to take my other two kitties here soon; it's so great knowing that this clinic is around and they'll be well taken care of. The veterinarian who treated my cat was the best. He wrote up the diagnosis for me because I wasn't able to stay with my cat due to work conflicts. The office staff as a whole leaves something to be desired. I've felt more welcomed and well-received at clinics that didn't have specialized services (tailored to cats) and it's a shame because I've been hunting for a good vet to treat 2 aging, constantly ill cats for the last 8 months. Larkspur would be perfect for us but I'm not going back there. I feel like it was a money thing, but that could have just been me. I didn't have a lot at the time but I do now and I felt like they saw me as charity. The person sitting at the desk literally wouldn't look me in the eye. It wasn't due to busyness. I felt like I knew the difference and I didn't care. I just want to make sure that my cats were well taken care of. While visiting the Phoenix area, cats in tow, I needed to find a Veterinarian who could trim one of my cat's claws. For those with cats, we know that not just any Vet will do. It's not that the feline species lifts their nose in superiority over their canine cohorts, ... maybe they do ... just a little. And can you imagine a Vet specializing in dogs or large animals knowing how to properly clip the claws of a fair and far more superior species? Cats, by nature, are obstreperous and more refined and graceful so that's why I went looking for a Vet who only works with cats ... and I found one - Larkspur Cat Clinic in NW Phoenix. My cat, Annie, turns into a Tasmanian Devil when I try to clip her claws but when I take her to a cat Vet, she lays on the table as if she is getting a pedicure at an exclusive day spa. I don't get it, but hey, it's worth it. When I arrived at the Cat Clinic, a fully-masked, pleasant young lady met me at the door (Covid precautions in place) took Annie and returned five minutes later ... mission accomplished. True to form, without complaint, Annie allowed them to clip her nails ... no muss, no fuss. And, it was only $11 for front and back paws. Totally worth it!! Convenient location, easy to find, ample parking, fast, friendly service, a total A+. If any other issues arise while I am still in Phoenix, this will absolutely be the place where I will go. read more

I gave a 5 star review a while ago but I have to revise it. My cat was losing weight and had diarrhea I was very worried about her. He was able to weigh her but she is a problem cat. He didn't do any blood work any real exam. The whole time he was talking to me he looked up at the ceiling never once looked at me which confused me. He gave me some pills and a bag of dry cat food and that was it. I left not having a clue what was wrong with my girl. I tried the pills which was a fight and she was throwing up. I called a few weeks later after noticing even though my cat was eating I could see her bones. I called on a Wednesday and they said they couldn't see her until middle of next week. I was afraid she would be dead. I took her to blue pearl emergency close to me. Got there at 8:00pm and left at 2:30 am and a couple thousand poorer. They ran every test on her, X-rays and ultrasound. They couldn't find any problems. They said most likely she has cancer in her gastrointestinal tract ( can't remember what the name was) they gave me liquid steroids to give her with little tubes pre marked for ease of dosage, probiotics to put on her food, it was tasteless and pain meds, liquid too. That was in first of June and she is still with me. She eats but doesn't get heavier. She was oozing blood rectally recently so I stopped the steroids which caused her to appetite to reduce. She still is active but I have litter boxes everywhere because she has diarrhea. My anger is that larkspur could have given her a shot to work with her and do what blue pearl did and given me liquid meds instead of pills. For the first time I thought he didn't care about my girl. I will never go there ever again!!! read more

The staff and vet are truly amazing and helpful. Our baby had not been since by them since 2008 they gave us no grief about it (our "current" vet wouldn't see us for a week). He was not eating and not doing well, we have had an amazing 18 years with our little man and we didn't want him to suffer for a week. Having gotten a rescued kitty who is the sweetest angel I've ever had, I researched the entire area for a preferably cat-only veterinary practice. Cats get too upset with howling, barking, whining dogs, especially if they must be hospitalized. I chose Larkspur and have just completed Brianna Mackenzie 's (Bree) initial check-up. Her shots were current. Larkspur Cat Hospital is a nice looking, stand-alone building on Cactus, about a block west of I-17. So, it's convenient for both sides of the city. I came from Sun City West. There is ample parking. The lobby is very clean and silent, just perfect for our babies. The receptionist is friendly, warm and helpful. They do not overbook so we got right into a clean and fresh smelling room. Vitals were taken by a gentle tech who asked about her history. She said Bree could explore anywhere she wanted in the room. (They understand cats!!!) Dr Smith IS TRULY A CAT WHISPERER!!!! He's soft-spoken, relates to your kitty by talking to it quietly and up close, stroking and petting before he examines. He totally won her over! This was very special: As he was feeling around her groin which couldn't have been comfortable for her, she turned her head completely around and looked intensely up at him. He noticed it and looked directly at her. They held one another's gaze for a bit. Then, Dr Smith bent over and whispered something in her ear and gave her a kiss on the head. Bree made a soft mew sound. She loves him and do I. He's a keeper! I've always been gouged at other clinics for initial visits and urine and blood tests are astronomical. Larkspur is so reasonable, I was shocked! He doesn't give any unnecessary tests. He only checks for things if there's a problem. Woohoo! Let stress on my pet and my pocketbook. I took my 16-year-old cat into Larkspur Cat Clinic after having him at Chaparral Veterinarian's. The people at Chaparral never properly diagnosed his problem but charged hundreds of dollars and wanted to send us to another facility that would've charged thousands of dollars in diagnostic fees and invasive testing. Thankfully we were able to find Larkspur and Dr. Smith. At the conclusion of the testing Dr. Smith called me and we talked for 25 minutes about the condition of my cat and treatment options. He gave me more time than any doctor of any kind has ever given to me. He was to the point, totally professional and his knowledge is unsurpassed. It's obvious that he is passionate about what he does and puts your cat's health in first priority. Dr. Smith is a tribute to the veterinarian world! Too bad he doesn't work on humans! read more

With the exception of my original vet that retired, Larkspur is not only the nicest environment as a cat only vet, the doctor is as caring and honest as my vet long ago...extremely hard to find an animal hospital that knows how to treat a pet without recommending hundreds of dollars of tests!! I am able to get my cats in quickly with their drop off service and I've also made appointments. The vet always spends a considerable amount of time answering all of my questions, not hurried like other vets and the price is fair. Not once did he try and "up-sell" me on different tests. This is the BEST cat vet in the valley! I adopted a kitten about two years ago and when I got him home, I quickly realized he was ill and at his weight wouldn't last long without immediate help. Dr Smith was AMAZING! He is a cat whisperer and within days my little guy was eating like a pig and is currently quite the little monster! My other little guy is a regular client as well, all are happy and healthy. I wouldn't take my furry felines anywhere else. Our dogs go to a regular vet but we know cats are quite different from dogs and vet visits (with noisy barking dogs) or car rides easily stress them out. Dr Smith is one of those vets that likes to start treatments at the more simpler stage and proceed forward with more treatment IF needed. I won't take my cats anywhere else. I have a very, very intolerable patient of a cat. She gets aggressive just being touched, but they somehow are able to work with her at Larkspur. I started bringing her here for shaves and nail trims, but she recently had to have her shoulder blade and a front leg amputated because of a tumor. Dr. Smith was so patient in explaining everything to me and walking me through things a few times, as I was a nervous owner and this is a big deal surgery. He did a great job with my cat's incision and taking care of her afterward, no matter how unhappy she was. Sarah in the office is a gem - she is knowledgeable, so kind, and so compassionate. This is how you want to be treated at such a stressful time. So grateful to have found Larkspur. read more

We wanted be present when our cat was euthanized. They very reluctantly agreed and acted like we were asking for something they NEVER do. Let me just say that it was a torturous experience as a pet owner who has previously had at-home euthanasia done. While being an emotional decision, we knew what to expect. What we didn't expect was Dr Smith's amateurish and clumsy process of finding a vein, having to increase injection dose over and over as our beloved cat was screaming, defecting and looking at us with fear and betrayal in her eyes. Why not take some time and let the tranquilizer work?! Dr Smith acted like this was normal. She was an affectionate, expressive and trusting rescue and had never reacted like this. This was 4 years ago and we're still not over it. We regret not just taking her back home. WE REGRET EVER WALKING INTO LARKSPUR AND WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND OR RETURN. Since then, we've lost another elderly and beloved cat and her walk over the rainbow bridge was peaceful with a caring, compassionate and competent vet who specializes in at-home euthanasia. read more

Let me start with my cat can be an evil demon and is very particular about people (she hates them). In the four years I've lived with her, we've been to six different vets. Three were great and knew how to handle her and three were afraid of demons. Larkspur and Dr. Smith know how to deal with cats like mine. They were also able to explain some things and she's on her way to getting her hip surgery. Dr. Smith talked with me about different treatments and options and we came up with a plan to exorcise some of my cat's issues that were affordable. I will only be taking my cat to Larkspur from now on while we're in AZ. read more

I've been in the vet tech field for 5 yrs I've been working here for the past 6 months and I've never met better management. Sarah is the most considerate manager I absolutely LOVE her, she definitely carries on more work than I've ever seen from an office manager. leaders like her are once in a lifetime, she's too kind and I've never met a co worker who loved their job more than Sarah! & Dr. Smith he's the best! he treats his employees like family, he really cares about his clients and patients, never came across a more passionate, mindful doctor who truly does care about the well being of your cat. It's hard to find a good vet now days- one that shows compassion, one that follows up, one that is thorough in communication. My family has been taking their cats here since I was a preteen- back when Krista (I think that's her name) was running the place. So, when I moved back to Arizona this is the first vet I decided to take my cat to see. My cat has IBS and has for years and lately her symptoms have worsened and have been causing her severe pain. The new vet at Larkspur cat clinic saw my cat and he recommended two medications to ease her pain and inflammation. Now, when he gave me these medications he didn't mention any cautions or side effects. Didn't say to watch out for anything in particular- he just told me that they would help relax and ease the pain. So, I went home and I gave these medications to my cat. Within a couple hours she looked drugged up and out of it. She was acting quite strange and after 2 days she was very constipated and straining to the point that she was crying in pain. I decided to look up the medications prescribed and every single website I went to (and I went to a bunch) said that both medications are used in dogs- one of the dog medications was commonly administered to dogs in 17-23mg dosages- which my cat's dosage was 43mg (seems a bit high for a 6 pound feline), and the other medication had repeated warnings that it was controversial for cats and I read several times that is should NEVER be used on cats because it can cause constipation and blockages that can lead to disease and death, or something to that effect. At this point I called the clinic and I explained my cats odd behavior and the constipation and straining. I also mentioned the medication and told them that I understand if there was a reason that the cat was given this type of medication, but was concerned because I read that there were side effects associated with this drug in cats and my cat was straining a lot and seemed out of it. The woman told me the doctor was busy and couldn't take my call. So, I asked if he could please call me back before 4PM that day because I was very concerned about my cat (it was 9 AM when I called), . The woman literally... LITERALLY, snickered out loud, condescendingly, and snorted that the doctor was very busy and she'll 'see'... ~click~ Anyhow, the vet NEVER called. Surprise! I have found a new vet- that so far has been very good to my cat. They follow up and check in and make sure my cat's symptoms aren't getting worse. I showed the new vet and the nurses the medication that I was given to administer to my cat. They were all shocked. First, one of the medications are these huge capsules- they are people sized. The first comment I heard was, "I've never seen medication in that format... for a cat". The other medication I was given were broken pills. Again- everyone was shocked by the format of the medication alone. The new vet said she was unfamiliar with using the 2 medications on cats. I could tell she didn't want to say anything negative, so instead she told me to give her a couple days to research the drugs and she'd let me know whether or not it was safe to give to my cat. A day and a half later I get a call from her. She says one of the meds is probably ok, but if the cat hasn't gotten better from it- don't give it to her. The other one- she said she didn't feel comfortable with me giving it to the cat and asked me not to. I will NEVER go back to Larkspur Cat Clinic. From giving me dangerous drugs (it seems like they buy what's on sale and give it out generically even if it's canine medication) that could kill my cat, no warning to the many possible side effects and complications to the dangerous dog medicine prescribed for my cat, then the horrific service- (Who condescendingly laughs at you when you are calling to say that your cat is having a bad reaction to the medication your doctor recently prescribed?) and then the fact that they NEVER called back- not to return my call, not to follow up, not to give further direction. I can't believe I paid $100 for this! They charged me almost $40 for the bad meds as well. I'm actually filing a complaint with the state board, and I told my family about what happened and we are all switching vets. I don't know what happened to this place, but it's not what it used to be. read more

Larkspur took care of my long hair tabby and Cornish Rex (cat) 14 and 18-years old respectfully. The clinic's cross streets of I-17 and Cactus Road are convenient and during Covid-19 they will pick-up your cat from your car. One (of many things) I like about this clinic is that they only see cats. The facility is also kept clean and quiet. read more

This place is fantastic! My friend Julie recommended them, since she has 2 cats and had really good experiences with her cat's surgery. One thing I love is that it's a cat only clinic. There are no annoying dogs barking at my cat or scaring my cat. The staff are super friendly and know a lot about cats, obviously. The vet, Dr. Justin Smith, explains everything with great detail and doesn't act as though in a hurry. He remembers things about me and the cats from previous conversations. I had my new kitty neutered there, and my older cat has gone for a variety of reasons. The clinic also has options for boarding in case you have to leave town and want your cats to stay there. I was very impressed after one visit. I had spoken to Dr. Smith regarding an issue at 10 am on a Friday morning. The clinic closes at 12p on Fridays. However, at 7 pm that same evening, I received an email about the issue we had discussed. read more

The vet Dr Justin was very good with my elder cat, Kady few years ago. She lived to 20 1/2 years old. Her kidneys issue was taken care of... Dr had patience with me a lot because he communicated with me by writing notes. I am totally deaf. I trusted him completely with cats. Highly recommended. read more
