Ever find a place to be...lacking hospitality to new faces in a restaurant?…read more Let's talk about the service first. We came on a Friday night and there were 2-3 other tables. Our server did not give us a breakdown of any dish, or even the categories on the menu (which by the way, are in Russian). They kinda expected us to "know" everything on the menu. My wife and I ended up googling EVERYTHING, and deciding on what to eat after reading other yelp reviews and what the dishes looked like. After taking a good 10mins of googling and figuring out what to order, we had to raise our hand several times, to a point where we had to call our waiter over vocally and with a hand wave to take our order. The restaurant really isn't big with only 2 other tables being occupied, and I guess locals do come here often and chat with the servers, but we're talking a good extra 5min of not looking at a menu and just waiting. People are raving about the service but I personally just didn't experience the same kind of hospitality. We ordered a borsch, a beef stroganoff, and a viennese schnitzel. I wouldn't say the food came out slow, but it was at the pace of a homecooked meal. The borsh tasted a lot better than ones I've had, and the sour cream was very creamy and fresh. The beef stroganoff was the star of the show with how flavorful and creamy it was. The beef was very tender, and the kasha was especially good. It's definitely enough to fill one person up. The viennese schnitzel is basically a fried pork cutlet (like a katsu) but with different seasonings and paired with some kind of red sauce. The mashed potatoes...were just mashed potatoes. The portion felt a little small for the price for what you get, pork cutlet and mashed potatoes being $27. I can see how authentic this place is, but being tucked so far away in Richmond naturally gets it lower foot traffic than other more accessible spots. The food is delicious and if people are willing to take their grandparents here, then you know it's authentic. I just wish the service was more attentive. The portions to price ratio was also pretty low, and I left feeling a little hungry despite spending $75 before tax and tip for 2. This place is feels more geared to reminiscing a childhood flavor with the family over a date night IMO.

I ordered a potato and onion piroshki, which was yummy, savory, and quite fried indeed. I'm happy they had more than one vegetarian option available.

Everything I tried was delish! Cheese & Dill Chebureki: Unlike anything I've had before and I've had a lot of savory filled dough things! The cheese is stretchy and salty and delicious. The fresh dill is a perfect herbal contrast to all that richness. The dough is light and airy and crispy, just fried to order. Also nice with that red sauce that comes on the side Potato & Onion Piroshki: Another deep fried dough pastry. More dough and more filling than the chebureki. Kinda felt like Italian fried dough. Though the filling was definitely not Italian, with subtle smooth potatoes and caramelized onions. Surprisingly light for deep fried. Lamb Samsa: A flaky baked dough with dense bits of lamb inside. The dough on the bottom was particularly dense and hard. Wasn't crazy about the texture, but the taste was solid. Lamb Pigodi: Essentially a giant steamed dumpling, cut open and stuffed with shredded carrot salad. It was difficult to eat with the plastic spork provided. That aside, it had nicely spiced minced lamb filling and lots of thick dough outside. Shashlik Wrap: Fluffy pita bread made by them, not from a plastic bag. Lots of fresh veggies and herbs. The onions and carrot slaw give a nice tang. Plus skewers of lamb for that nice pita combination. The lamb came on skewers, so you had to pull it off. Didn't seem grilled to order, but was probably grilled a tad earlier in the day.
