    Vegan sushi sampler about $18
    Ute L.

Not a cheap place, but one of the few restaurants that will accommodate vegans and vegetarians. There are some a la carte veggie appetizers, like sauteed shimeji mushrooms, or veggie maki rolls. I took the guess work out of ordering and went with the vegan sushi sampler for about $20. It included a cucumber roll, a roll with sliced strawberries, which I saved for last as dessert, and two cooked rolls. One had fried scallions or shallots in the center. My favorite was a maki roll with sauteed shimeji mushrooms in the center and wrapped in crispy spring roll paper. There was still room in my belly after my 20 piece sushi sampler. So I ordered a half portion of honey caramelized banana. It was beautifully presented inside a nest of spun sugar that was more for looks than taste, but an extra point for technique. The outer layer of the crispy banana was too hard. Almost broke my knife trying to cut through it, but the taste was good. Probably wouldn't order it again for the price, around $6. A bit overpriced for local standards and what it is, but an extra star for being vegan friendly.

    Last meal in Rio.

My salmon sashimi (10 pieces) melted in my mouth, just like it's supposed to. My California Rolls were quite good. (They substituted mango for avocado. But, I wasn't mad.) They gave us a salmon appetizer. Dunno what it's called. I liked it, though. My mother enjoyed her Gyoza dumplings. Walking distance from our hotel. A block from the beach. Free wifi, once it accepted the password. Prices were more than reasonable to me. But, the dollar is strong against the real, trading at 3.85, today.

I would not recommend this restaurant. I asked the owner lady if she had scallops as I didn't see…read moreit on the menu - she replied yes so I order 4 pieces of scallop nigri and one scallop sashimi. The sashimi was one piece cut in the 4 thin slices - very tasty but very small. The nigri came cooked to my surprise. when I asked the owner, she said it is not fresh so we need to sear it for safety. I was not impressed to be told this. moreover, the rice had a bite and inedible. when the bill came, this was the biggest shock. She charged me the equivalent of £25 for ONE piece of scallop sashimi on the basis that it came from Canada. She did not warn me of the price when I ordered and further dos lot share that the nigiri scallops would be defrosted. why can Sushi Leblon down the road served 100 times fresher and better sushi and sashimi for a fraction of the price? My advice is DON'T go to Azumi unless you want inferior food for exorbitant prices. The owner is very dishonerable. I paid, left and will never return.

Great selection of fish: yellowtail, tuna, sea bass and so on. The place is not that big, I would recommend you to eat directly at the bar table with the sushiman preparing your meal. I would recommend also to order just sashimi & niguiri, the rolls were not that good. The service was not so good, they only speak Portuguese so it was quite difficult to understand them. Anyway, you must come if you are visiting Rio!

Botekim do Japa has decent sashimi and nigiri, but the other dishes they serve aren't that great…read more So just stick to the sashimi and nigiri. :P We ended up going to Botekim do Japa twice when we were in Rio because we were getting a little sick of eating at churrascarias and per kilo places all around the city, and we needed our sushi fix. This was the most decently rated Japanese restaurant near our location, so we decided to check it out. The first time we went, we ordered a sampler platter that included 35 pieces of nigiri, including 8 pieces of sashimi, 4 of which were salmon and 4 of which were tuna (35 pieces in total). It is a $32-33 USD platter, so it wasn't a bad deal at all! Check out the attached picture to see what was in the sushi platter. The fish was pretty fresh, and the salmon skin roll was really good too. Deep fried-philly roll was a pleasant surprise too. Overall, I'd rate the platter a 3.5/5. We also ordered a side dish of the vegetable tempura (tempura de legumes), which was about $11-12 USD. The vegetables were not breaded in panko or traditional tempura batter, which was a little disappointing. The tempura sauce it was served it wasn't all that great either. I'd rate this dish about a 2/5. After our drinks, our total came about to about $50 USD for lunch, which wasn't all that bad, I suppose. The second time we went, we decided to order a couple different dishes, and I think we should have just stuck to our original order. We got a full order of the seafood combo yakisoba (about $16-17 USD), and it wasn't very good at all. The sauce the yakisoba was in was rather salty and it felt like they just used regular ramen noodles to cook the dish. The shrimps were frozen from a bag and the calamari were small and chewy. I'd rate this dish a 1.5-2 out of 5. Luckily, we got the deep-fried Philly roll on the side too (about $10 USD) which salvaged our meal. This deep-fried Philly roll was really good. I'd rate it about a 3.5/5. Anyway, we weren't too thrilled with the overall quality of the food at Rio, and our experience at Botekim do Japa was pretty on par with the whole food experience during our vacation. Pretty average Japanese food, but nothing to get too excited about. I wish we could have found a better place to eat, but we were just hungry those two times that we went and based our decision off of our geographical location. Overall, this place is a 2.5/5 in our books.
