Long story short, certain remedies work for some people's types of balding and certain remedies don't work for other people's types of balding. He gave me steroid injections and topical steroid medicine to use when I didn't even need it. How I know is I got a second opinion from another doctor who was more an academic than Dr. Kleinberg. Then after getting the consultation from the second doctor I did my own research and found that I indeed did not need the steroid remedies he gave me since I did not have typical male pattern balding (androgenic alopecia). It was just my hairline balding. On top of that these useless remedies were giving me acne. When I left the appointment with the second doctor, he had himself a pitiful laugh his with his staff when I was on my way out the door after seeing him, explaining to his staff that another doctor gave me steroid injections for my hair when I didn't even need it. Super embarrassing because not only did I not need it, they sent me a medical bill for these "injections", and on each appointment they charged me for "medical examination" which did not even happen each appointment I had. If you want to run a business, fine. But if you are going to charge common people for every single dollar you can on your job then at least do the work correctly. They even had the audacity to send me many of those bills in the mail saying I owed them money for the unnecessary "injections" and the imaginary "medically exams" on top of my already expensive copay. Each bill increasing due to interest. You guys are never getting that money you billed me on top of the copay. The copay already cost hundreds. You owe me it if anything. Last thing I'll say is I work as a pharmacist which means I actually have a degree of health literacy. I can't be the only one that got taken advantage of if that's the case. Only difference is you've taken advantage of the people not as literate in this field, but that isn't their job or their responsibility, and that is why they came to you. Scammers!

He had me undress in front of him and did not give me a gown to put on. There was no female in the room to chaperone, just me and him. He had me sit on an old leather exam chair that had no paper to line it without clothes on. YUUUUCK. When I turned around he made a comment about about how my behind was not tan-- awkward and horribly uncomfortable and wrong. One of the prescriptions was to be called in at the pharmacy near my home; this never happened. In addition, I learned belatedly that Dr. Gruen works at more than one practice. When I called what I thought was the Upper East Side office I was told they had no record of me or my appointment--and did not explain that I might have reached the wrong location. Finally, I was billed for a sum that was not covered by my insurance, but instead of calling me to inform me that it was overdue, the practice charged my credit card directly. (Apparently permission for them to do this is in the "fine print" form that you sign when you come in for your first appointment.)

My past two visits to his office, I've left feeling extremely upset due to the tone/manner in which he spoke to me. Any attempt at asking him questions results in him developing an attitude and speaking in an extremely condescending, disrespectful, dismissive tone (with body language to match). He acts as though you just asked him to sacrifice his firstborn child. I have a lot of respect for doctors and always use a polite tone when speaking/asking questions, however Dr. Palkhiwala feels it is ok to speak to patients in a condescending, disrespectful, and dismissive manner. No matter how politely I speak to him, the conversation always ends in him speaking very disrespectfully to me, leaving me feeling quite upset. NYU Langone should really follow up with patients regarding their experiences with this doctor because he is quite out of line. Being a good doctor requires expertise AND good bedside manner. I'm going to be looking for a new cardiologist, as a result of my upsetting experiences with Dr. Palkhiwala.
