Great Craft Fair! Lots of diverse vendors and food available. Parking is tight, so be prepared.

I had read about Mad Bene, I think in the Honolulu magazine, and wanted to give them a try. My…read morecousin wanted to meet up for dinner and I suggested here. Didn't realize it was out in Kapolei, but why not make it an adventure. They were busy, and we had to wait 25 minutes for a table. But little did we know that was only the beginning. My only complaint is the wait time between everything. The drinks took a while, then the apps took a while, but we were glad they came, because our entree came right as we were finishing up. Again, we're lucky the pasta came out and we could work on it because the pizza took a while. Timing is really important, and I'm not sure if there's someone expediting or not. A couple next to us had one entree come out, the husband's, and the wife had to wait a while. That's not good. But what is good is the food! We loved the meatballs and the caprese salad. We also loved the truffle fries! The mushroom pasta was delicious, and it was still delicious two days later when I finished it. The NYC pizza was great! And the MAD Garlic was really good, and we added pepperoni to it since we read people did that. I also liked the innovative egg nog bread pudding. However, it took a while to come out and I expected it to be warm, and it was not. Our server, Aleia? Alisha?, was great! She was friendly and welcoming which makes a difference. We could not fault her on the timing since it was the kitchen. Also, the hosts were friendly too! I would stop by if I was in the area. 3.5, but I bumped it up! Mahalo Mad Bene!

It's taken me a while to write this review as each visit asks for the opportunity to change my mind…read moreabout the place. I've been here four times already and each visit just affirms my two star review. The food is consistently bad. Pasta is consistently dry and appears to have been sitting too long to be served (Al Dente vs Al DRY). The service is good, always trying to amend my order but at a certain point I gave up trying to ask for a remedy.

We ended up here as a fallback plan after the wait at Haleiwa Joe's got too long. Overall, this was…read morea pretty mediocre dining experience, but the biggest issue -- and the reason we would not recommend this restaurant -- was food safety. The restaurant itself is very small and, honestly, felt poorly managed on the Sunday night we visited. It appeared the manager had staffed the place almost entirely with high school-aged kids. To be fair, they were all polite and friendly, but they clearly were not trained professional waitstaff. The hostess in particular seemed completely overwhelmed and unsure of what she was doing. The food itself was average at best for the price point. Ambiance was okay, nothing particularly memorable one way or the other. We probably would have left thinking "meh, it was fine" except for one major problem. My wife ordered the seafood spaghetti, and the New Zealand mussels in the dish were BAD. Not "a little fishy" bad -- genuinely spoiled bad. The smell and taste were immediately obvious. We brought it to the manager's attention, and her response honestly shocked me more than the mussels themselves. She casually explained that sometimes they get "bad batches of mussels and you can't tell," as if serving spoiled mussels is just an unavoidable normal occurrence. That is not an acceptable answer from a restaurant serving seafood. To their credit, they did remove the dish from the bill, which was the minimum they should have done. Unfortunately, later that night my wife ended up vomiting after dinner. Thankfully it was not severe enough to ruin our vacation or require medical attention, but it absolutely confirmed our concern that something was wrong with the food. At the end of the day, average food and mediocre service are one thing. Serving spoiled shellfish and responding to the complaint with a shrug is another. We would not return.
