I've been in the shop when local fishermen have brought in their catch. Can't get fresher than that!

After poking at the scraps at the local supermarket the other day I said to myself..I need to find…read morea fish monger! The closest one open to me was here. It's been a year since I set foot in the Arndale and longer still since bought anything from here so I was a but apprehensive. Circling around the counter like a shark I was super excited with their selection. Everything looked fresh and tasty despite what the negative comments say. We were served very quickly despite it starting to be quite busy and she was lovely. For £40 we walked away with 1kg of tuna sashimi, salmon sashimi, 180g of scallops, 5 rock oysters and 3 red snappers.. ..I usually spend that on sushi alone.. Overall staff were attentive, paid attention to hygiene i.e cleaning hands every time they touched a fishy, wore masks and had great produce. Yes I will be back after me any my kitties devour this stash.

Its closest competitor is the smaller but more quaint fishery in Didsbury, Evans Fish, but for me this place tops it through the sheer selection offered at excellent prices. When you enter the room, just alongside the Arndale Food Market, you will be literally astounded. There are literally hundreds of fish on offer. You may also be scared, as some of them are huge and have really scary faces. They have everything you can imagine from cod and haddock through sea bream and jon dory to trout and mackerel. Apart from the fish they have crabs, including some blue one with patterns on their backs worthy of an art gallery. They have prawns, ranging from the very tiny to the absolutely huge. One type of prawn is so big you would honestly only want one per person. They also have oysters, which are an alarming 85p per one. They have mussels. They even have cod roe and caviar. The prices are all unbelievable, often £2 per fish or three for a fiver. They also do 'fish pie mix' which has chunks of white fish, salmon and smoked fish in, for two quid or so. Basically if you like fish, this is the best place in the world.

Got a bunch of fresh oysters, some crab meat and some shrimp. The oyster of course we ate right away. The shrimp and the crab meat we've had for dinner later that day. Quality was great. Fresh, smooth and creamy oysters. The crab meat was lovely sweet, full of flavours. With the shrimp we made some tasty seafood dip. Really a nice place to grab some fresh and tasty seafood. Friendly people, fair prices.

They're tiny pots of unseasoned boiled and chilled seafood from about 2.5-4£ a pot depending on whether it's prawns, mussels, cockles, whelks, crayfish, etc. Perfectly size for sampling if you can't commit or want to sample them all. There are condiments available for you to season after, but I prefer to eat them as-is, since plain boiled fresh seafood is already have their own briny flavor. Provided are forks, toothpicks, salt, pepper, mayo, Marie Rose sauce (ketchup mayo).

They staff are very helpful, friendly and very competent about what the are selling. I also like the oval shaped display plan the shelves are laid out it gives the customer a good mini tour around and see their fresh product. Another added bonus is that it is located in a spacious food section of the indoor market and the place is very clean and tidy. If you lucky you might find a unique catch on display when you visit, last year they had a 1.2 metre Swordfish caught from somewhere in West Africa on display.

I'm sure the slippery fella was included in the list of 10 Most Diabolical Fish on Earth that I was reading about on-line the other day. Anyhow, face to face with my sub-aquatic nemesis, I was truly amazed by this place. They have just about every possible type of fish and seafood one can think of, and more besides. I don't know how common this kind of comprehensive fish/seafood emporium is elsewhere, but I reckon it has to be worth a visit to Manchester alone and if you have some small children you could take, all the better! It's like some kind of edible museum. An aquarium of exotic tastes, no less. The staff were incredibly friendly too. I was told that the Conger Eel is often bought by African customers and you buy it by the slice. Other residents included huge bream and carp, a plethora of jet black catfish nestled barb to barb at the front of one side of the gargantuan oval counter and several decapitated fish heads, which according to the monger, are bought and used for fish stock. Further still along this plank of plenty, was the seafood section replete with pink spider crabs, king and emperor prawns, and an assortment of shellfish that ranged from cockles and whelks to oysters. What a place. Fin.
