Our experience with Language Door has been fantastic. We were at another language school before and both my kids were unhappy. When learning a new language, it should be fun and exciting. I looked into Language Door and found our forever home. First, the owner Natascha is fantastic. She's multi lingual and very hands on. She loves what she does and it shows with all the students. She knows what teachers would be best for certain students. Second, I love love love Susan and Lupe who work as administrators. Susan is Hungarian and speaks so many languages, I can't keep track. She's kind, a world of knowledge and gives the best hugs. Lupe is smart, multi lingual and wonderful! Every student who walks in is greeted in the language they're learning. There are adults and kids learning Japanese, Arabic, Spanish, etc. The teachers are worldly, my kids love their classes and can't wait to go to school even on Saturday's. While I'm waiting for my kids I get to speak with all the parents who are lovely. Walking in I feel transported to an international setting where people are open minded, multi cultural and inclusive. I absolutely love Language Door. The teacher I have for my advanced Spanish class on Saturdays is amazing- extremely friendly, kind and very well educated and good at explaining and tailoring lessons to each individual student. What really makes this place stand out (and believe me I did my research) is that if you want to take a foreign language class with them you can sit in on a few classes before you decide to sign up for the new start date. The owner, Natascha is also extremely attentive and you can tell she loves what she does and goes the extra mile for her students and teachers. I am quite impressed with the level of service provided and it was more than worth it for the price! I've been taking my two kids (preschooler and 4th grader) to Spanish classes at Language Door for about 3 months and we've had a great experience. The teachers are good and staff is very helpful. We especially like all of Maestra Liz's singing in the little kids' class. : ) The two things I like most about Language Door compared to other programs are, first, they are nimble and willing to work things out to fit what your family needs. They were able to find a class for my older son at the same time as the younger one, and that was very helpful. Second, they have a nice waiting space (with wireless internet!) where I can sit and do work while my kids are in class. It always feels welcoming. read more

I have been wanting to learn Korean for a while, and found Language Door's Yelp deal and decided to give it a shot. The place has a great positive energy, but I definitely see a lot of room for improvements. I can read all hanguls and know a few simple words in Korean prior taking the class. Since it was my first time taking an official lesson, I went with (and was recommended to take) the beginner A Korean small group weekly sessions. I'd say that the progress depends entirely on the level of the students in the classroom. If everyone gets it, then it'll move fast; if not, then it will move at a slower pace. Our teacher was a native Korean speaker, so she was able to share a lot of her insights and cultural tips along with our lessons, which I really appreciate. What disappointed me was the pace of the class; we only got through 2 very basic lessons of the textbook, and most content are meant for university students, not for working adults like me and all the other students in the classroom. Overall, I think the problem lies in the proficiency gap between the students and the curriculum. Since Hangul is typically the first step of learning Korean, I'd recommend offering another class that focuses solely on Hangul, so that the pace of the regular lessons could be moved at a faster rate. Even though I learned about a few grammar points that I wasn't aware of before, these past 8 weeks mainly served as a review for me when I was expecting a lot more. Language door could be for you if you enjoy the small group setting, but I think I'd rather go with a private tutor who can tailor the lessons for me in the future. read more

I used a yelp deal to take a Japanese class with aspirations of speaking fluently in Japanese, but I quit half way through due to work constraints. What I do remember is the overall welcoming atmosphere of the place and the teacher was very kind and accommodating to my requests. It was an easy process to get in, an easy process to take the class and an easy process to purchase materials for the class. What I did like was the small class atmosphere. There were a handful of us taking beginning Japanese and it gave us a lot of time to ask our teacher questions about the language (She was from Japan, but I forgot where in the country). She explained the nuances of how some people say things in the South of Japan as compared to Tokyo. I enjoyed my time here and I will come back when I have time to do so. read more

Already took the first Japanese class and immediately signed up for the next! Our teacher, Sachico-san, is wonderful, helpful, and always ready with an answer. The curriculum is fast, and everything we are learning is immediately useful. The class works to teach conversational Japanese at the same time as written. And that's an exciting challenge, and even after just one term, i feel pretty accomplished. The staff at Language Door is especially kind and helpful. They run an excellent school and really care about all of their students in the many many languages they offer. Everyone who works there speaks so many languages already, very impressive (and intimidating). Highly recommend this school for anyone looking to pick up another language. read more

The class sizes are small. So you get a lot of personal attention. If you get lost, the instructor works with you until you get it. You won't get left behind, as should be the case. The instructor I have is a very good teacher overall. Just remember that you're learning a language. Don't underestimate the commitment it's going to take on your part. You need to spend some time each week studying, memorizing, and practicing. The building and classrooms are functional, but not fancy. It's very convenient. Parking is good as well. The price isn't cheap, but it's worth it for the helpful instruction. read more

Hmmm...weird, there are a LOT of things different about MY experience with Language Door than with the other 2 reviews. I have been taking German classes there for over a year, and its been amazing! The classes are smaller, which is fantastic for more one-on-one help. The curriculum does start with a textbook (doesn't everything?) but you progress up and past the text...when you stick with it. I have truly learned a lot because of the classes and staff at LD...I recommend it highly. read more

Language Door definitely deserves five Stars. I want to thank Natascha, the owner and Anders, my Swedish language instructor. Both are very professional. Thanks to my sister-in-law who is from Sweden, I took a one on one class with Anders for eight weeks. I began the class with a little knowledge of Swedish. Anders really helped me build my confidence, so I am now speaking and writing a lot more. Anders definitely taught me a lot about the language. I really enjoyed the eight weeks at Language Door. I would recommend Language Door to anyone who wants to learn a language. I want to thank Anders and Natascha for making the last eight weeks so enjoyable. I take French here and it is wonderful. The teacher really customizes the class to my speed and how I like to learn. We tries lots of different activities like reviewing textbooks, playing games, reading stories, asking tests, chatting, telling stories, etc. The activities that worked the best and I liked the most were the ones we kept. The other nice thing is how understanding everyone is when I didn't have time to practice or study. I am a working professional and sometimes I don't have time to fit in studying. That's ok here, we just keep going. I highly recommend the classes if you are interested. read more

I'm writing this review from Paris... I took a French language course (or what I like to call a crash course) prior to my trip. While I am so very far from being fluent, I am glad that I did. I understand a decent amount of things and can comprehend a decent amount while reading as well. I had Patrice as my instructor and thought he did a great job. He is originally from France, and he speaks very well. More importantly, he was very patient w/our small class. And he puts in a lot of effort to teach us what we want - ie for me: the past tense crash course when some classmates were absent. The Language Door also teaches many other languages. I would not hesitate to take lessons here. It's a pretty convenient location in Irvine near the airport and 405 with ample parking spots. And they always have classes starting. Most classes are pretty small too. We only had 4-5 students per class so everyone got attention. Oh and rumor has it that Kobe took Spanish lessons to speak w/Pau Gasol... so that's just kinda neat. read more

After doing some research, and based off of the reviews, I reached out to the Language Door to inquire about Mandarin lessons. Please do yourself a favor and save the hassle, look elsewhere. The receptionist Susan(sp?) is a very bad representation for the company. She is abrasive and extremely aggressive. I have never experienced such bad customer experience. Let's just say I signed up with another tutoring service half a mile away near Segerstrom. I strongly suggest you doing the same. read more

I've been going here for the past 8 weeks for Spring Session and absolutely LOVE it! I had no previous formal Spanish lessons prior to this and went to a demo class with Sonia as my Spanish instructor. PROS: 1) Sonia is a native Spanish speaker. This class was actually a level 2 beginner course, but Natasha and Sonia thought I could catch up and learn it quickly. Amazingly, I can hang with the class (though I still get my ser and estar mixed up), and I'm glad I took this particular course because the pace is just right. 2) Sonia is so funny and is very helpful in correcting your Spanish and developing your speaking skills. 3) Sonia moves at pace that helps the Spanish stick before she moves on to the next section of the curriculum. Her teaching style for beginners is like she's teaching a classroom with elementary school students, and it really does the trick. 4) My class is super small (only 2 students), so you really get individualized attention here. It's like private instruction for the group rate. For these reasons I stuck with the class and will continue with the next semester to further develop my Spanish. Conveniently, there is a Yelp deal the same time the Summer Session is starting. Score! There are only a couple CONS: 1) The Spanish book they're using is written by a non-native Spanish speaker, so some of the words in it are obsolete or incorrect, but the sequence works well. 2) The substitute teacher who took over for Sonia while she was on vacation did not seem like she wanted to teach at all. She moved to quickly and spoke more English than Spanish. I definitely preferred Sonia over the substitute. But I guess this isn't much of a con considering this wasn't the regular instructor anyway. Additionally, Natasha and Laura and very accommodating and are quick to answer questions, which is why I went with them as opposed to the other schools in the area for Spanish. Their customer service is responsive, and I like that they know all the students personally. Price-wise, when I did the break-down compared to other schools, the rate per minute was about the same if not less than the other schools, as the classes here are once a week for 1.5 hours. Parking is ample and it's right by the airport. Highly recommended if you want to learn Spanish! read more

I took private French lessons here for 12 weeks to supplement my studies as a French language minor. Not only were my two teacher's excellent but also the staff and schedulers are extremely organized. They are very quick to respond are genuinely interested in each student's individual goals. My personal situation was very specific as I was intending to skip 2 course levels of French to enroll in a more advanced course at university. My teachers (Anne & Elena) provided lots of conversation practice & answered all my questions. My Chinese teacher, Michelle, was awesome. Very picky about accents which is great. However, what I didn't like was the lessons. I was expecting this to be a crash course on useful Chinese words and statements. Instead I felt like I was back in high school, learning tons of useless things. For example, learning how to say what my uncle does for a living. Also everything was very proper, not how Chinese actually speak. My boyfriend, who's first language is Mandarin, had no idea what I was trying to say half the time because it was so proper. It's just not realistic conversation for a trip to China. Overall, not worth the price. I pretty much only learned a handful of useful things I could have found on the internet for free. read more

I've been taking private Korean lessons at this school for the past few months and I could not be any happier! My teacher, a native Korean herself, has helped me develop my korean skills tremendously and luckily I was able to go to Korea for an entire month this summer!! Anders is a terrific swedish teacher, Thanks to Anders in a year I've gone from a complete beginner level to a level where I can now read the daily newspaper, watch movies and handle basic conversations in stores or at work with swedish native speakers that live in Corona del Mar where i work. My friends are envious of my steep progress Anders' focus on conversation during his lessons is extremely helpful and I am always amazed how he manages to bring his Swedish to a level where the student can understand what is being said and interact. It's really good for motivation! Taking lessons one on one is also super convenient and the cost is very reasonable compared to all other options I have looked at. So I highly recommend him as a teacher! I also love the school is conveniently located by john wayne airport, the staff is also awesome and if you get into a month where money is tight you can pause your classes and resume them later on. read more

Work was getting dull and I needed an outlet. I learned Spanish in high school and learned German in college, French seemed to be the next language to master. I found Language Door right by my work, they offered weekend and night classes for adults, and the Yelp deal made it worth giving the place a try. I've been to two classes, and I actually look forward to going each week. The teachers are very nice, encouraging, and very thorough. I love that the teachers go into everything about the language and not just memorizing common French sayings and greetings. read more

I took beginning A French with Patrice. He is an amazing guy. He was lot of fun, extremely entertaining, and my classmates and I laughed so much in class. Learning a language is very difficult especially French, but Patrice made it so much fun that we all looked forward to going to class. If you ever decide to take French at Language Door, I highly recommend Patrice. But if you don't have a great sense of humor, maybe you should take the other French teachers. read more

I'm hosting a French teenager who needed to take some lessons to improve her essay writing skills in English. The Language Door is close to my home so it was very convenient. The staff was very nice and professional and flexible. My student did one on one lessons with Ann for 2 weeks (4 hours per day). Ann was a really great teacher. The classes and staff are low quality. The owner Natasha is very confrontational. I have noticed that others have written reviews of other staff members as being abrasive. No one seems to know what they are doing at this place. The building is also very old and it's right at John Wayne airport and you can't hear the teacher because of the planes right next to you. Many of the windows are also broken so you can't fully close it. The place also often smells like diesel fuel from planes. Not a good or appropriate environment for school learnings. Other schools have more professional classes and teachers. I have also learned that many people at different Language Door locations argue with each other and fight over trying to get students to enroll at their location. I would recommend that you spend your money at a different place. I am happy to be at a better school. read more

I am taking beginning Japanese and Chinese (separately) and love learning them there. Both my teachers are native speakers of the language they teach. Chinese teacher is not too good at English but hey! that's what it would be like if I studied the language in China. The Japanese teacher is very experienced in teaching methods and good at English. But I like both my teachers despite their differences. The classes are intimate - which gives lots of face-to-face time with the teacher and classmates. I am almost done with one term and already signed up for the next term - got the early bird discount. Once I reach a certain level of proficiency, I plan to take other languages for fun. I see many students taking Russian. :) read more
