East Potomac is a classic mixed bag--the potential and location are incredible, but the facility is…read moredefinitely showing its age. For those unfamiliar, the complex has three setups: the 18-hole Blue Course (regulation length where you can take a cart), the 9-hole White Course (an executive mix of par 3s and 4s), and the 9-hole Red Course, which is a walking-only par-3 loop. They also have a busy two-tier driving range and plenty of flat putting areas. If you are brand new to the game and do not have your own set yet, they make it easy by letting you borrow clubs, making it a very welcoming entry point for beginners. We played the Red Course on a Saturday morning ($20/person) and ran into some serious pacing hiccups. After starting about 15 minutes past our 8:00 AM tee time, we ended up waiting on literally every hole, dragging a short 9-hole walk out to an hour and a half. The compact routing is also pretty dicey safety-wise--the tee boxes sit right next to the greens, and we nearly took stray balls to the face twice, so you really have to keep your head on a swivel. Conditions were rough around the edges with mostly flat greens, rock-hard sand in the bunkers after the previous night's rain, bird droppings all over the grounds, and a main clubhouse building that feels noticeably run-down. Despite the rough shape, the setting is hard to beat. Being right on the water at Hains Point with planes flying overhead, cyclists looping the park, and The Wharf right across the river for post-round lunch gives it a great local vibe. There has been a lot of talk and planning around major overhauls and restorations for the course through the National Park Service and National Links Trust, and it honestly desperately needs that refresh. If the planned renovations eventually bring the drainage, clubhouse, and course layouts up to standard, this place could easily become a world-class municipal gem. For now, it is a fun, casual spot for a cheap practice round as long as you know what to expect.

East Potomac has a course for everyone no matter their skill level or time commitment. They offer a 9-hole Par 3 (Red course), 9-hole (White course), and a 18-hole (Blue course) course that are all enjoyable to play and are manageable for even beginners to play. The pace of play is usually good, but on a nice day you might run into a bit of a delay (worst I've seen is about 10-15min behind). The greens and tee boxes aren't always in the best condition, but they're maintained fairly well on all three courses that it won't throw off your game. For the cost of play, it's hard to beat the value you get from playing at East Potomac. ALSO, I always forgot that they have a newly renovated mini golf course if you're looking for something a little more lighthearted to play.

Marquis has been golfing since he was 6 and gave us some quick tips that immediately improved our swing. They also had great cocktails and food and we loved having a private room where we could play music, watch the game, and play and learn at our own pace. They have multiple games including a driving range, courses, and a game where you aim at monsters (which our daughter really enjoyed). The staff provided great recommendations on each game. We immediately signed up for a subscription- the prices were really reasonable, hours are accommodating, and we envision going on our own to practice, bringing our daughter (she's been asking to go back), or going with friends. This would also be a lot of fun for corporate events or team building even if you don't golf and we are looking forward to bringing our teams in the near future. There are three themed courses--Illusions, Conservatory, and Art--and Conservatory was definitely my favorite! Each course also took us longer than the estimated 10-15 minutes, so we felt like we got a good amount of playtime for the price. One thing to keep in mind for larger parties: only four people can play together at a time. Since we had a group of seven, we had to split into two separate groups. Also, if mini golf isn't your specialty, don't stress! After six shots on a hole, you can move on without it hurting your score further. I also came back for the Frankenstein Bar, and they did an amazing job with the decor. It's such a fun, Instagrammable spot, especially for Halloween season. My favorite drink was the Monstrosity, a cinnamon-forward take on an Old Fashioned. It said drafts for $3. I was very excited cause that deal is probably the best in DC. When we got the bill, it was way over what we expected to pay. It turns out the fine print, which was never printed on the menu. Seated the draft beers were limited to three options. Or bartender never mentioned it. I do feel duped on that. Which worries me that the rest of the menu has other bait and switch options. To the mini golf, which is why everyone goes here. The courses were appropriate. I knew Matt, the Golf Doctor, from a few years back when he was working for someone else. He was…read morealways a great dude and I'm glad to see him doing well here. So I saw him for a putter fitting. I had done a SAM PuttLab fitting years ago in the past but had heard great things about Quintic. And wow, was it eye opening! Actually my father-in-law around the same time had scheduled a putter fitting with Matt as well. So we ended up going together and spent almost three hours on the putting green in the shop. SAM is more keyed in on the stroke, but Quintic has a much better representation of what the ball is doing. Both are good but let's just say I'm happy to have done this putter fitting. Here's a breakdown of how the putter fitting process went: First, Matt had us use our own putter and he placed a mirror on the face of it. When we aligned ourself to the hole, he had a laser from the hole pointing at the ball. And when the ball was removed, we could see how good or bad our aim was. After we just putted a bunch of balls to the hole. He looked consistency in our putting stroke, what type of arc we had, what length and look was best, etc. My FIL and I had vastly different fittings at this point. He wanted to start from scratch as he had a putter from 20 years ago that was too short and light. I just wondered if I could either tweak my gamer or see if anything was better. After we were relatively settled Matt then put us on the Quintic camera and software. It was so cool! We saw lots of stats regarding our stroke that I won't bore you all with. Most importantly for me was I had too much loft and the ball was skidding a ton before rolling. For me, Matt tweaked my putter's loft and lie and already I started seeing some better results. There was one putter that may have been marginally better, but he didn't try to do a hard sell which is always a big negative in most stores. For my FIL, he definitely needed something different than he had and I could already see him being more confident at the end of his session. Only trivial negatives I'll add are the selection is really, really good but isn't the best in the area. Also since I was there for a while parking had to be in a garage but that's DC. Lots of awesome things going on at the Gold Doctor in the middle of DC. I can't wait to go back and check out what else Matt has to offer.
