After checking online to ensure they took donations, I went to drop off some books to donate,…read morepreferring to support my local library over other options. I stood in line, patiently waiting while the person at the desk helped another customer. I also wanted to get a library card, having recently moved to the city. The person at the counter stopped helping the other customer to tersely inform me that returns go in the box outside and donations are not accepted, then handed me a paper of alternate donation sites and shoo me away. My partner asked if we could set the box down while we look around, as we had walked a block from where we parked, and the person behind the counter responded "I'm not going to fall for that. Please leave. Take the box outside." We left without argument. As a resident of Haverhill wanting to access the public library and attempting to donate books in good condition and with positive intent, I am appalled by the assumptions made about me and the way I was treated. Please update your website so others won't go to the library to donate and get treated the way we did.

When I've taken my young granddaughters they have treated us as if we were family. My granddaughters become excited when I simply offer to drive them there. The benefit of this library is that it's part of the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium, a network of 36 public libraries in northeast Massachusetts. So if this library doesn't have what you need and you have a library card, a librarian can check to see if the item is at a library in a nearby town. Wifi connection is usually pretty good and there's plenty of computers available for use. There's three large tables with power strips which are great if you're working or a studying on a laptop. Plenty of free parking spaces (unlike Andover, where you will most likely need to pay a few dollars to park). If I were to critique one thing about this library, it would be how the book categories are organized. It can be hard to discern different genres or types of books unless you're a Dewey decimal system expert. The signs they do have for categories are very broad (ie "biographies") so you may take a while to find a specific book.

But they get an "A" for effort, just ask one of the resource librarians and they can get whatever you need from one of the other local libraries. Sometimes in a day or two. You can also put books on reserve online which is nice too.

If you have a library card, you can easily request items from anywhere in the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium. Only (minor) downside is with its location downtown, you may have to pay for parking if you park in the lot. It's 50 cents per hour until 6pm each day except Sundays and holidays. However there is plenty of free two-hour parking on the streets.

I met a few of the staff while there, they were pleasant and helpful. I discovered they have been doing renovations and have moved furniture, including the circulation desk. It looks great and appears more user friendly. The renovation included the addition of a small workspace. It's not the greatest, but it's certainly adequate to be able to do work there. My experience was great. The staff was very pleasant and helpful and it was nice to be able to go to the library in my hometown. I also appreciated that I didn't have to pay for parking like I do in NBPT. As I have used many local libraries Amesbury doesn't hold up. I recommend Amesbury look to build a new library. Check out Salisbury, Merrimac and Newburyport libraries, they are amazing. Please Amesbury- consider building a modern library.

I usually use their website and request the books to be put on hold that I want. They can send you an email or text when the book arrives which is very convenient!
