Dr. Sofman is great! Highly recommend him if you're looking for a new dentist of looking for a switch. Small operation where you get great, personal customer service. The front desk ladies are so nice and friendly. Dr. Sofman does all the work himself including the cleaning with his assistant. Parking can be a little hard sometimes, there are only a handful of meters out front. read more

Dr Sofman and staff are extremely pleasant and did a great job. You don't always go to a dentist and get cleaned by the actual dentist... Usually the dentist checks you at the end... This is one of those reviews I dread writing, because I don't want people to know about this gem.. but oh well - "no pain Lane" deserves some credit. Ok - who likes going to the dentist, really? I don't love going - but Dr Sofman is truly a first class dentist. I've never been to a place where the actual doc does all the work. He has a great assistant (her name escapes me now), who is just that. Dr S does all the cleaning, scraping, poking and prodding. He's completely honest about his thoughts and doesn't want to sell you anything. He's there for your teeth, period. No waiting, and no time wasted, and he doesn't make any effort to inflict pain. Pretty sure there are some evil dental assitants out there who take pleasure in stabbing gums with metal instruments. Sally is great at the front desk - pleasant and actually knows who you are even if I show up only every 6 months. Some things, you should never skimp on to save a buck - and health is one of those things. Skip those 'chain' dental shops! read more

Dr. Sofman is the best dentist I have gone to. I had braces when I was younger which made me fear getting dental work done and I was afraid of getting yelled at. So I avoided it for about 6 years. I finally got dental insurance and went to see Dr. Sofman. He was so nice about everything. He asked how long it was just so he knew what to expect in my mouth. He didn't yell at me or lecture me. I ended up with 5 cavities which can be expected. I have now been going to him for 2 years and have not had a bad experience. Cleanings take about half an hour. I got a cavity filled and it only took about 20 minutes. The dental assistant is great. She knows who you are and is really friendly. She tries to make you feel really comfortable. Sally at the front desk is wonderful. She knows who you are every time you walk in and knows what you do for a living. Overall Dr. Sofman's office is great and I would highly recommend it. read more

I have always had a fear of the dentist which led to not going for the last 5 years. I found Dr . Sofman on Yelp and after reading the reviews, I pushed my fears aside and made an appointment. Not only were they accommodating with scheduling (he sees people nights and weekends!), but I was able to get in fast. Dr. Sofman was gentle, kind and didn't lecture me about my 5 year hiatus (or my lack of flossing). He simply asked how long it had been so he knew what to expect for my cleaning. Everything he did, He explained what he was doing. Also, he is the first dentist that actually does everything himself-cleaning, X-rays, fillings, etc! I've been going to Dr Sofman for the last few years and have never had a better dentist. He has a gentle touch and always explains what's going on and how things are looking as he progresses through the exam. Of course the dental experience goes well beyond just the dentist. The ladies at the front desk are helpful, friendly and funny. The hygienist is also very nice and doesn't let you drool all over yourself. I can't recommend this dentist highly enough and I plan to continue to see Dr Sofman even if we move out to farther burbs. read more

I just relocated to the area and was looking for a good dentist. Thank you Yelp! I decided to go here based on the glowing reviews, and since they happen to take my insurance and are only about a mile away. Woohoo! Upon arrival, there can be some difficulty finding a street parking meter space. However, keep driving past the office a little bit and there is free street parking down the street! Get a little fresh air and walk if you are able. The receptionist was great, really made checking in and appointments easy to schedule. They also ended up handling my insurance with not a peep required from me, past my numbers of course. Brilliant, worked as it was supposed to! Dr. Sofman himself entered and did all the work on me for my regularly scheduled cleaning. He was so great about explaining absolutely everything and reasoning behind his practices. For example, he did a full xray on me the first appointment but then doesn't until 5 years later! This saves me a lot of xray exposure. Of course, he'll take partials if there are concerns. The appointment took 30 minutes. From when I walked in the door. I couldn't believe it! His assistant was great, but I really loved that he was so personable and did all the work on me himself. He took an interest in me and told me some of his own stories. I love his practice and I've been there two times so far. I'll be back soon! :-) I'm so happy to have found a place just as good, if not better, thanks my childhood dentist. Yay for Sofman! Yelp rocks. Finding this dentist through Yelp has actually made me feel lucky and special and that my life must have a higher purpose, because he's so excellent. My wife left her appt. for a filling HAPPY. This is the same woman that considered flying back to her home country and paying out of pocket to get dental work done by her childhood dentist. She couldn't sleep the night before the appointment. After my own appointment, I can tell you why she was so happy: 1. Dr. Sofman does all the work himself - filling, checking, cleaning...everything. He has assistants, but they do just that - assist. 2. He isn't OCD. He doesn't spend brutal hours digging at your teeth getting every single scrap of plaque out. Think of it like 80/20 - 80 percent of the clean for 20 percent of the pain. But your teeth will be healthy and very clean. 3. That also means cleanings take under an hour, and they start ON TIME. This is huge for busy people. And necessary because his magazine selection sucks. 4. He spends his time on the important stuff - educating you on keeping your teeth healthy. No lectures or ridiculous regimens, just a clear explanation of exactly what's needed for good tooth care, no more. 5. His staff actually feeds the meters outside the office while you're visiting. It's the little things. I enthusiastically recommend him ESPECIALLY for those paranoid of dentists. read more

Dr. Sofman is a great dentist. For one, he is present during the entire cleaning, unlike other dentists. He also gets you in and out pretty quickly. My last cleaning was about 20-25 minutes while still being completely thorough. Filling a few cavities as also been as quick (as can be), and very well done. I needed a dentist after an acrimonious dentist break-up, and I found Dr. Sofman on Yelp of all places. I have used Yelp for restaurants, but never for a health care provider. Will do so from now on. I was in the middle of a procedure (had root canal, needed crown), and he built me a temporary crown at my first visit. He completed the permanent crown a week or so later. Dr. Sofman is old school, efficient, candid, and skilled. I trust him. Dentists can be like car mechanics: you need to find one you trust or you might have unnecessary stuff done. His office is also unusually well run. I called once because I was running 15 minutes late, and I was asked to re-schedule (which I did), so as not to make the other appointments after me have to wait. I appreciated this. My last dentist ran on dentist time: 45 minutes late. read more

Believe the reviews! I, too, found Dr Sofman mainly on Yelp (also through recommendations on my local Newton message board) and I've been really happy after a couple years of appointments. Unlike my previous dentist, he never tries to upsell you on things that may not be really necessary (like a special fluoride treatment that even though I've only ever had 1 cavity, my previous dentist said I needed to buy from them..) And the efficiency is amazing. I also appreciate the personal touch- again unlike my previous dentist where I literally say a different hygienist each time for the entire 9 years I went there, they really know you at this solo practice. It's a bit no frills- office is not super fancy, etc- but I think that's a good sign because he's trying to save you money. read more

I went last April to DR? Sofman for tooth pain. I found out a filling had popped out. So he fixed it. As I left it dawned on me he didn't take Xrays . A short time later I had pain again. So I went back to him. The cement hadn't grind down impinging on a lower tooth. He fixed that. i was fine til about a month ago. I had pain again in that same tooth. So I went to a different dentist. He told me that the filling applied was sloppy. It didn't fill the whole completely and had leaked out impinging on the tooth behind it. So now seeing as that's now the 3rd time I need a filling it'll need to be crowned. To much tooth will have been removed. This gets worse. Then that new DR. asked if I'd had Xrays II said no his look said loud and clear WTF That last tooth now had a cavity so deep I need a root canal. IF DR? Sofman haT\d taken Xrays he'd have seen that cavity. Then he could have fixed it Cause no Xrays were taken I now get to suffer due to incompetence. I just created a Yelp account specifically to say how good my experience with Dr. Sofman was. As the other reviews have said, he does all the work himself, including taking the x-rays and doing the cleaning. In the process, he made me wonder what the heck every other dentist and hygienist I've had was doing wrong. You know how those x-ray films jab you in the gums and it hurts like crazy? nope, turns out Dr. Sofman can get a perfectly good shot of your teeth without doing that. You know how checking your pockets involves jabbing you repeatedly with that needle-tipped dental tool? nope, turns out a gentle brush over your gums does the job. You know how cleaning your teeth requires scrubbing at your mouth with all kinds of metal implements? well, the implements were there, but Dr. Sofman was amazingly gentle with them. Just as importantly, he gave clear, thorough, interesting explanations of what he was doing and why. All round, really a remarkably pleasant experience. read more

I absolutely love Dr. Sofman and everyone in the office. I used to HATE going to the dentist, as a child I had a lot of problems with my teeth, and I wouldn't have minded so much but the hygienists who did my cleanings were not empathetic at all and I feel were more used to adults then little kids. My dentist was kind but felt the need to lecture my constantly. Needless to say as I got older I went to the dentist less and less until it became years. Finally I realized I should go, having had a route canal at 12 I was worried about the damage to my front tooth and what that would mean down the line. Someone at my work recommended Dr. Sofman and I couldn't be more happy. Dr. Sofman does all procedures himself; cleaning, x rays, fillings etc, with the help of a hygienist. He doesn't lecture; is kind; always has a smile on his face; and you can tell really loves what he is doing. I have recommended Dr. Sofman to anyone I know looking for a dentist and I hope to continue to see him. Also the Staff are all very nice and always remember me when I come in, I feel that can be rare when you are only in the office 2-3 times a year. A friend heard me say how I was really frightened of going to the dentist and I am very very grateful for the recommendation of Dr. Sofman's office. It's a small office, run by friendly, yet professional and efficient staff. I'm particularly fond of Sally at the front desk; she's very helpful and funny, really puts me at ease. I like the way it's Dr. Sofman who does the xrays, and the cleanings with the able assistance of Kylie (I hope I'm spelling her name right, she was *great* and very good at swooping in with the suction tube earlier this week). He explains everything, and takes the time to answer any questions. There's plenty of parking (it's free just a little further down the street). I love Dr. Sofman's manner and he treats me very respectfully, even when I'm quaking in my boots. :) Can't recommend the office highly enough. read more

Brilliant dentist. I bring all my children there, and two of them were previously terrified of dentists. After switching to Dr. Sofman, those same children now actually look forward to going to the dentist! Very nice, professional place with properly good service as well. If you appointment is at 11- guess what? You're seen promptly at 11! Unheard of , and very good if you have a busy schedule. Most importantly, he is a very talented dentist- not some shyster who sees $ signs as soon as you walk in the door, but rather someone who wants to see you have good, healthy teeth for your whole life. read more

my family and i have been going to dr. sofman for over 15 years. as other reviewers wrote, he is the one who works on you from start to finish-- it's not a factory line with tons of hygienists and then the dentist comes to check at the last minute. he explains every step of the procedure and it is easy to communicate concerns with him. i love the homey feel of this place-- sally the receptionist knows patients/families by name, and all staff are friendly. read more
