This is definitely the definition of classic movie theatre. I came here for a movie screening and was totally surprised by the lack of modern amenities, old school carpeting, lack of cellular service to the point where the hosts of the screening could only scan tickets via wifi, and even an old school thermostat on the wall which may or may not have been controlling the limited air conditioning going on in the basement area where the auditoriums for the movies are. They did have a concessions area with some stool seating and tables at least. Overall this wouldn't be my first recommendation for a comfortable movie viewing experience but maybe the vintage feel is part of its allure.

I haven't been here in yearsssss, so it was nice to revisit. We attended last night's private screening of 'The Flash' with other DC Comics fans (Marvel all day tho!! -lol) and it was a blast. Will add that last star if they finally renovate the theater seating. While the chairs aren't totally uncomfortable, you do miss the cushion of the more up-to-date theater seatings. __ I eat. @f.hux I thrift. @DCthriftish

This is a movie theatre that has been in DC for ages-- and I've been here a lot. May not look like much for the front but you go in and are greeted by friendly staff. They show a lot of indie films, documentaries, a lot of movies that you might not see in the regular theatres. I once saw a beautiful film called Loving Vincent here! Then down the stairs or escalator you go... and refreshments are there for purchase-- bonus, they have booze!! Theatres are smaller and feel more intimate. If you're like me and a prone to getting chilly, bring a sweater and enjoy the show! Ps. Doors open 15 mins before the first movie and stay open 15 mins after the last show ends. Pss. $7 tickets on Tuesdays :)

Went here for the screening event of Pain Hustlers, it's a very nice and cozy theater, clean setup with drinks service . Parking is pretty convincing, there are many parking garages within reasonable walking distance.

I'm giving this five stars bc of its location, film choices, events, and staff, but... I really prefer picking my seat ahead of time which you cannot do here, there's no WiFi or cell service downstairs, and the bathrooms are really far from the theaters. I've been going here since it opened, though, and I'm very grateful to have it downtown.

This theater specializes in independent films but I had the pleasure of visiting for a screening. Also this is the first time I've been to this theater and I like it. It is super close to work and convenient to metro, so I wish they had more screenings here. On the outside it looks ancient or retro (lol) but it's clean and neat on the inside. They have a decent selection of wine and beer (see pics). I had a hot dog, sweet potato tots, and a Strongbow cider. I had high hopes for the tots but they tasted like frozen tots. It was nothing special. The hot dog was standard and it wasn't a pretzel roll as others mentioned. I guess they got rid of that from the menu. I should've ordered the jalapeño pretzel, that looked good. Most people were eating food from outside so I don't know if that was my clue. It's so convenient so I would visit again for a special feature.

Best movie theater in DC! Great selection of films, easy parking (at reduced prices for visitors on weeknights and weekends), and the best food for the film. Although I hate to let you in on the secret (I don't want E St to run out), the crab pretzel is gooey, melty goodness, and I've been ordering it on most visits. The chocolate bars are just like the name, Divine. Don't park at the theater on weekdays--you'll get hit with fees of $25 for just two hours. Try Lyft or Metro at those times. Because there is no reserved seating, you can get a good seat at this theater even when you arrive just 10 or 15 minutes before the film. MoviePass works seamlessly at this theater for now. I predict Landmark E Street will be one of my favorite theaters, even after MoviePass goes out of business.

"We just want to show the films we like. The ultimate goal is to show as wide a swath of movies as…read morepossible: good, bad, new, old, weird -- whatever." I read that quote from one of the founders of Suns Cinema in a piece about the theater, and it pretty much sums up why I'm writing a five-star review for this 28-seat movie theater. I've loved movies since I was young, and seeing a movie in a theater is as special to me now as it was when I was a budding cinephile growing up in Dallas, a city with a surprisingly great independent movie theater scene. But in our post-pandemic, streaming world, movie theaters are struggling and we're losing some. But there are some positive signs, too: new theaters opening, historic theaters getting bought and protected. Suns Cinema was founded by two movie lovers with the help of crowdfunding. And they turned what had been a cellphone store into one of the coolest little cinemas in the country. They show whatever they want - foreign films, classics, the weirdest little surprises you'd never find on your own... Take for instance what's "Coming Soon" this month - a movie made in 1958 and a movie released this year; and movies directed by William Friedkin, Agnès Varda, Andrei Tarkovsky, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Alain Resnais... They show about 30 movies a month, and many sell out quickly due to the small number of seats/tickets available. When you arrive, you're carded and asked for your ticket at the door. Then, on the left downstairs, is a bar with a few snacks (popcorn, candy, olives) and some great drinks: well-crafted cocktails, a great wine list, beers, sodas, etc. Then up a steep flight of stairs is the screening room. It's tiny, with sets of mismatched movie theater seats and chairs and a screen as large as it can be in this little screening room. I had wanted to visit Suns Cinema for years, and this past weekend, it finally happened. A friend and I got tickets for the 6pm showing of Eyes Without a Face (which I had seen once 20 years ago and my friend had never heard of - I didn't let her Google it before the screening) on Saturday night. We showed up a bit early, grabbed snacks and a great glass of wine. You can hover in their bar (there are tables and barstools), but we decided to head upstairs to pick our seats. I'm not tall (I say five foot one but that might be a bit generous), so I'm always worried about having poor visibility in little theaters like Suns. We went to the front row, and this worked fine. (We played a game of Goldilocks when we walked in and tried a few seats and positions out, because each section of seats offers a different style of seat and view - if you get there early, you can Goldilocks it from the 28-seat selection, too). Sure, you can hear a bit of noise from the bar downstairs during the screening. And yes, they added an intermission to our 90-minute movie that wasn't designed to have one (I know my cinephile brother would fume about this), but seeing a movie at Suns reminded me of why I have always loved and still love going to the movies. It was amazing to hear the reactions our small audience had to our strange, shocking little movie. There were gasps and giggles and post-movie debate. Suns offers something no other theater in DC does (and that people in other cities may not be lucky enough to have). It creates a community for people who love or are interested in film. A place to see rare movies, strange movies, old movies, challenging movies. A place to see with people who want to share those movies and the experience of being in a cinema. If I lived in DC, I'd be here often. Living in Baltimore (a city that doesn't have anything close), I'll definitely be back. DC is lucky to have Suns Cinema.

I love going to the movies and, in particular, I love supporting independent movie houses. Suns has…read morebeen open for years, but I hadn't gotten around to being a patron until last week. First off, allow me to say just how lovely and responsive the theater staff was. The screening I wanted a ticket for had sold out online, but after some brief back and forth on Instagram, they suggested I arrive anyway as sometimes there are no shows -- it was my lucky night. It's definitely a small theater and it doesn't have any of the amenities you'd expect at a multiplex, but what it lacks in corporate comfort it makes up for with charm. It's clear this place is run by people who *love* the act of moviegoing as every nook and cranny of Suns has some kind of reference or homage to old school movie theaters or classic film. The bar downstairs has some cocktails, but I kept it simple with a $5 Miller High Life and Haribo gummies. The popcorn they have on sale is one size only which was fine for the price. Definitely most of the focus is on the beer and spirits which, like the Alamo, you can take with you to the screening room upstairs. The screening room holds maybe 25 people or so and definitely has more of a home theater vibe, but it makes for a really intimate gathering and atmosphere. Definitely a hipster hangout. That said, most of the movies they advertise here are older ones (like Scream 3 which I watched as part of their Parker Posey monthlong retrospective). I will definitely be coming back.

I…read moreused to frequent the Crystal City location and had great experiences there, so I was excited to make this one my regular spot. Unfortunately, my recent visits have been a bit hit or miss. Food & Drinks This is where most of my frustration comes in. On my most recent visit (Sunday, April 26) to see the Michael Jackson movie, I tried to order a milkshake only to find out the machine was broken. This is the second time recently that the milkshake machine has been down. At this point, Alamo's milkshake machine is starting to feel like McDonald's... always broken. On another visit, I attempted to order iced tea and they were out. I then asked for lemonade and they were out of that too. I ended up settling for a ginger ale, which I was charged $8.50 for. Prices here are already on the higher side, but that charge felt incorrect since most of the other soft drinks listed were closer to $6. For what you pay, you expect basic menu items to actually be available. I also wish there were more gluten-free food options, as the current selection feels limited compared to other theaters and restaurants in the area. Service Service really depends on who you get. Some servers and staff provide great customer service and are attentive, but others act like they don't want to be there, which takes away from the experience. I did speak with the manager, Peyton, who was kind and apologized multiple times. However, the interaction felt like it lacked the professionalism or experience needed to actually resolve the issue. A small gesture, like comping an item or offering a return ticket, would have gone a long way, especially given that these weren't first-time issues. Ambiance & Logistics The theater itself is nice and generally clean, which I appreciate. The recliner seats are comfortable and, importantly, they always work, which is a big plus. There's also plenty of parking in the lot to the right of the theater, and parking can be validated for the garage, making visits pretty convenient. Overall I really want this location to be better because it's so close to home and has the potential to be a great neighborhood theater. But repeated issues with menu availability, inconsistent service, and pricing concerns make it hard to fully enjoy the experience. Hoping to see improvements, because convenience alone isn't enough to keep customers coming back.
