My mother's crystal chandelier arrived at my Texas home with a glass arm broken in shipping. It's probably not an incredibly valuable chandelier but it holds so much value to me. I remember my mom's neighbor bringing it back from Italy in the 60's and mom paying her $50 for it. It traveled with us to every subsequent home for the next 50 years till it came to live with me. This wonderful shop owner couldn't exactly match the arm, but he came extremely close. He took great care in replacing it, and the chandelier looks great. It really meant everything to me. I love these types of niche stores. Unfortunately, when my son broke one of the alabaster shades on the ceiling fan in our rental house tossing what he claims was "just a stuffed animal" in the air, this lampshade store was unable to solve our problem. On first glance it was your standard three light Hampton bay ceiling fan, but the shade was screw on instead of the type with a lip that is secured with a screw (clearly I'm no lampshade expert here). Apparently this is rare, and if ease of availability on the internet is any clue, yes, it's not common. I was hoping the lamp man would offer me an alternative solution... something less expensive than replacing the entire ceiling fan, but he did not. Ultimately we ended up passing the problem onto our landlord (with a note of apology!) when we moved out. I have no idea how he solved it. Beyond not offering much help, the lamp guy wasn't particularly friendly and certainly not efficient. I love the idea of a specific lamp shade store, but the execution just wasn't there. I do have one lamp that carries a more sentimental significance to me... perhaps when one of my kids knocks it over I will give this place another try at repair. read more

Found some vintage mid century lamps in great condition but the cords were brittle & the plugs not up to current safety standards. Found the shop on Yelp & what a great find! It's very hard to find lamp repair or restoration as we have become such a throwaway society. I was more then pleased with the shop owner's work. He also helped me find the best lampshades. There are tons of shades and glass globes. Glad to find this resource. His work is not cheap but if you have an heirloom or rare piece this is the place to go and worth it. read more

I was given some beautiful but neglected antique lamps. They were in a friend's attic, very dirty, with old, frayed wiring. They were formerly oil lamps, at least 120 years old. Amdy rewired them with antique/authentic cords and helped me choose gorgeous shades and finials. I took them home and cleaned them up and here they are in my Victorian living room. This is the 2nd time we have taken old lamps here and couldn't be more pleased. read more

I waited awhile before I posted this complaint to make sure my emotions were intact. I am going to give the full details of my encounter with Amby at Lampshades/Knives in Hurst, TX. He is the only one that I know of, in the Fort Worth area that repairs lamps. That being the case, he can just about charge anything he wants. He never will write down what he is charging you for-he just adds a bunch of numbers in his calculator & tells you what it's going to cost. You have to pay up front, so you really have no recourse if he doesn't repair it correctly. I took an antique lamp to him to be repaired. All it needed was to reconnect the wires to the night light socket. A simple quick repair that he could have done while I waited-but NO, he said he had to rewire the lamp. There was nothing wrong with the wiring or the light sockets, but he charged me for new wiring (it had a very nice gold wire & he replaced it with an ugly brown one), a new light socket (nothing was wrong with the original) & a new night light socket (nothing wrong with the original). Not sure any of the above were new, because he reuses parts & pieces from other lamps he has collected over the years. After I picked up the lamp, I unpacked it and found out that the brass base had been cut or broken & the night light socket was too big for the hole in the base. Instead of just using the original night light socket, he put the one that was too big in it & it wouldn't come out so you could change the bulb. I called him & explained to him what had happened. He told me to bring it back in & he would make it right & not charge me. I took it back in & began to tell me that the reason the brass base broke was because it really wasn't brass-just a cheap metal. That was untrue. He then took another similar brass base off another lamp & made me pay for that plus labor to put it on my lamp. I couldn't believe I was paying more for him to re-repair my lamp with a used part (for which he charged an unreasonable price) than I paid him the first time. Needless to say, I was upset. When I picked up the re-repair, I tried to break the old base he said was cheap metal-I couldn't break it anywhere, plus I saw on the bottom that it was marked brass. So it must have been cut to insert the larger night light socket. He also put the used base on where it didn't match the front of the lamp. If you use him, have him write down what he is charging you for, so you have some kind of proof. Needless to say, I will never do business with him again! read more

Ordered 2 lamps. Took over 2 weeks to get it. One was broken. I had to re-box it, go to UPS as they wanted to charge me a ridiculous fee for UPS to pick it up at my home and wait another 2 weeks for it to arrive. Not sure if I'll order again. read more

We had a lamp that was knocked over accidentally. I was hoping that this shop was still open. I had been there once before. The owner was busy working on a customers lamp. When he finished he came to the front of his shop. Took my lamp to his back workshop. In less than twenty minutes he came back with my lamp. I was so pleased that I didn't have to go shopping for a new lamp. This is a wonderful small business! It's hard to find a lamp repair shop. He also has many shades of different sizes and shapes.
