Crostini appetizer special - amazing!
Megan T.

We came to the Highlands area for our anniversary and decided to choose Lakeside Restaurant as our place for dinner. We called a little late for reservations, but were able to still get booked! So I highly recommend calling as early as you can to get the time you want. Drinks - we started with the mordern mai tai and bada bing martini. Both were absolutely delicious! They know how to make a cocktail! Food: -Costini - topped with garlic spread, whipped avocado, tomatoes, almonds, and goat cheese. This was an appetizer special. If it is available - get it! Amazing! -Crab cakes and stuffed rainbow trout dishes - both of the main meals were amazing too, full of flavor. What's ironic, is the sides - broccoli, rice, and mac and cheese had absolutely no flavor, and were about as bland as could be. So, if they could get the sides to be as flavorful as the meals, they would get 5 stars for me for a perfect meal. Dessert - blueberry bread pudding. I'm not a big bread pudding fan, but this was actually pretty good. Definitely recommend Lakeside if you are in the Highlands area. We really enjoyed the service, meal, and ambiance at this restaurant!

Had a wonderful meal at Lakeside tonight, highly recommend this Highlands classic. Service is excellent! I called for a reservation and they couldn't accommodate me until later than I hoped... they promised to call night of in case there were any cancellations. THEY DID CALL! Got me in at our preferred seating time. From the time we arrived until we left we encountered nothing but kind, efficient and welcoming service from the staff. Food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend the goat cheese appetizer and the Black Bass special was perfection. The salad and bread pudding dessert were good... just not amazing. The dining room is intimate and charming but not romantic or private. Tables are tightly spaced and it's loud inside. This shouldn't keep you from going... it just makes it a four star experience instead of a five star. They also have a cute patio by the lake (really more of a pond) but it was too wet to enjoy. We will absolutely return to Lakeside on a future trip. Excellent food and service!

Every dinner we've had at Lakeside has been outstanding, from the great service, food and wine list, you can't go wrong spending an evening at Lakeside Restaurant for dinner! The views of the lake are also nice!

My wife and I dined at Lakeside during a recent weekend getaway to Highlands and were so glad we did. It's clear this restaurant falls in the "local institution" category and it felt local and authentic in the best possible way. The walls are decked out with local art (most for sale) so that adds to unique character. The owner and staff were extremely welcoming and helpful from start to finish. Neither my wife nor I is big on seafood, but the menu is varied and we both found something we loved (her the ravioli and myself the chicken). The squash soup was also top shelf. Pro tip: you have to call for a reservation (old school!), but don't be put off if you have to leave a message; they will call you back on availability and confirmation. Highly recommend checking out Lakeside, even if your taste is more turf than surf.

This outdoor garden is so charming, and the view is so pretty it is worth a stop just for this. They have several fish items on the menu. We were told their small dining room of 12 tables was full until 9pm so we opted to eat out in the garden, even though it was a bit chilly. We asked them to turn on the outdoor gas burners for heat and only one of the 2 was working. A waitress went around and gave out blankets, so that was nice. We started off with the lobster bisque. I didn't detect any lobster in there, and the flavor was mildly salty but it was ok. My hubby got the NC Mountain Trout ($24). Our waiter said the trout comes from nearby in Brevard, NC. To me, the trout was tasteless. My husband liked it ok, but called it basic and bland. I got the seafood pomodoro ($32). It had good flavor. Our waiter was great and had a good personality. We also enjoyed watching a chickadee going in and out of a birdhouse right beside the dining guests. We got the chocolate flourless cake with butterscotch syrup on top for dessert. It was so rich, do not even try to get this to eat by yourself ! It was semisweet chocolate and very dense. I got a Dark and Stormy cocktail. It was heavy on the rum and didn't taste balanced. But overall, the view and service makes up for everything else.

It's such a beautiful and peaceful space to dine, especially with the amazing Spring and Fall temps they get there. We were with a party of 6 (plus a baby), and walked up without a reservation a bit late in the evening. We figured we'd try it and see if we could get in if it wasn't too late, and luckily enough, the hostess was kind enough to make it happen for us! The menu actually has a lot of variety for a wine garden - drinks and food wise. I started with the French onion soup and it was delicious. The Caesar salad was also quite yummy, but the meatloaf was the showstopper of the night! I am still dreaming of it now, and wish I could replicate it myself because it was that good and memorable! For dessert, I ordered the affogato which is their house made vanilla bean ice cream with an espresso shot and it was the perfect ending to the night! Our server was so attentive and kind, and constantly checked in on us and cleared our plates since the tables are a bit on the smaller side. I had an excellent experience all around!

I had the Chilean Seabass excellent. I heard others in our party commenting how good their ribeye and the filet mignon was. My husband said the lobster was a little dry, but that didn't keep him from cleaning up on it in record time. The cornbread presentation was fabulous and everyone at the table absolutely raved about this dish. We sat at a table in the bar area and we liked the lively atmosphere there. The colors in the restaurant are dark. Some of the people in our party described it as moody while others described it as cozy. I love the upscale cabin decor in this area of the restaurant. All of the staff were pleasantly attentive. The food arrived quickly, but we never felt rushed. Megan was our server and she handled everything beautifully. The bartender helped me adjust our reservation time to a half hour earlier and he also came by the table to see how everything was going. I don't remember his name, but the extra effort made us feel cared for. We found a jewel in the Highlands and will be back!

Very Disappointed -- Would Never Go Back…read more We had eaten at Primary once while visiting the Highlands a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, that experience was disappointing from the beginning. The bartenders were rude and unhelpful, and the food and service were two stars at best. The one reason we decided to give Primary another chance was the Sunday night prime rib, which happens to be one of my favorite meals. I completely understand requiring a credit card to hold a reservation. I was a chef for 10 years, so I understand the business side of reservations and no-shows. Unfortunately, our French Bulldog became seriously ill around 3:30 AM Sunday morning, and we felt we needed to rush him to BluePearl in Atlanta. Because of the emergency, we obviously could not make our dinner reservation. I tried calling Primary, but no one answered. The recorded message instructed me to send a message through the OpenTable application, which I did. I explained exactly what had happened and asked if they would please refund the reservation charge given the circumstances. I also emailed the owner personally and explained the situation. His response was simply no because we did not show up. I reminded him that I had followed the restaurant's own instructions and contacted them through OpenTable as soon as I could. He still refused. What bothered me most wasn't the money. It was the complete lack of professionalism, customer service, and empathy. Emergencies happen. I would have expected a restaurant to understand that a sick family pet requiring emergency veterinary care is very different from simply deciding not to show up. After our first disappointing experience, we gave Primary another chance because of the prime rib. Unfortunately, the way this situation was handled guaranteed that we will never return. If I could give the owner negative one star, I would. Don't waste your money or your time supporting a business that treats customers this way.

The live music was an awesome touch and made for a fun atmosphere. I was able to bring my pup since I sat outside, which was a huge plus. Ended up using the back of the booth for our water bottle and condiments and still struggled for space. Buffalo wings were good but not exactly Buffalo. No buttery spicy hot sauce. It was more peppery than buffalo. Wings were cooked perfectly though Reuben is excellent as are the jalapeno Mac bites. Cheese dip was also excellent but we (and the table next to us) had to ask for more chips. Not portioned terribly well. Beer options were very slim (2 on tap from what it gathered). I'm sure there were plenty of bottled options but draft was disappointing. We ordered the ale but they tapped out and brought us brown ale. At 5pm...only a brown and stout on tap. Overall, it was a pretty middling experience but the food was good and they offer a military appreciation discount.

For entrées, I had the barbecue lion's mane mushroom with slaw, potatoes, and asparagus and wow, don't let my picture fool you, it was absolutely delicious! After my first meal at this nationally celebrated fine-dining restaurant, I left determined to…read morereturn as often as possible during my time in Highlands, North Carolina. My second visit only deepened that conviction. Once again, I found a seat at the bar, this time in the capable hands of Fernando. Knowledgeable, engaging, and effortlessly personable, he made the evening feel less like formal service and more like being welcomed back by an old friend. The meal began with Paoletti's house-made sourdough rolls: cloud-soft within, delicately crisp at the surface, and served alongside black-olive tapenade and herb butter. With them, I ordered a glass of the cellar-special 2022 Barolo to carry me through the first two courses. I had arrived with firm plans: the basil-garlic butter escargot I had been dreaming about since my last visit, followed by the cannelloni. Then Fernando recited the evening's specials and mentioned elk ravioli--house-made pasta filled with elk and ricotta, set in a tomato demi-glace. Plans changed immediately. The trio of elk-and-ricotta ravioli was a delight. The pasta had that taut, satisfying al dente bite that announces it was made by hand, while the demi-glace was deep, savory, and impossible to leave behind. It begged to be gathered up with another piece of sourdough. If decorum had allowed it, I might have polished the plate clean. Next came the escargot, a dish against which I have a particularly exacting standard. My uncle has owned a French restaurant for as long as I can remember, and some of my earliest culinary memories involve this classic preparation. As a French-trained chef, I also know how quickly escargot can turn rubbery when mishandled. At Paoletti, the kitchen shows admirable restraint and precision. Rather than offering the slightest hint of bounce, each snail nearly dissolves on the tongue beneath a glossy basil-garlic butter, with slender slices of mushroom adding an earthy counterpoint to every bite. The seasoned breadcrumbs softened into the sauce--and really, who has ever objected to breadcrumbs steeped in butter? Certainly not this food lover. For the grand finale, Michael selected a 2016 Brunello di Montalcino that made the cannelloni sing. He shared stories about his path to Ristorante Paoletti and about his young daughter's remarkable palate and knowledge of food. His pride was unmistakable, as was his gift for making a guest feel at ease. He remains one of the most personable and perceptive guides to food-and-wine pairing I have encountered. The cannelloni itself was unlike any I had tasted: instead of the traditional broad pasta tubes, a delicate crepe enfolded ground veal, ricotta, and spinach. It was a daring substitution, and it paid off beautifully. Baked beneath béchamel and Bolognese ragù, the dish was rich yet composed, each element amplifying the next. Superb. It is easy to understand why Ristorante Paoletti has earned such ardent praise. Tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains of Highlands, it delivers the ambition and polish of a destination restaurant without the stiffness that so often accompanies fine dining. The cooking is assured, the hospitality genuine, and the experience memorable from the first warm roll to the final sip of Brunello. I intend to return as often as opportunity allows. Molto bene, Paoletti.
