A little small-town grocery store that, for some reason, has become the local tween hotspot. It's probably the deli - seems to be about 90% of their business. Ask for any kind of sandwich and they'll make it for you, you know what's in stock because they have their whole stock on display under the counter. I recommend the chipotle chicken. The deli also has fresh (non-sandwich) dishes by the pound - potato salad, dolmades, beef marsala, moussaka, and more, that they'll dish up for you. Prices are reasonable and service is quick, but friendly. Please note - the gentleman manning the deli looks exactly like John Cena. Do not be alarmed by this, it is not actually him. After you get your food, go out and eat it on the patio behind village hall (out the back door of the grocery store, next to the seafood counter). A lot of local people and especially middle school students hang out here after class, and there's a fountain where you can watch the dogs and birds going by. Very pleasant. I can't speak as much to the rest of the grocery store, but it seems nice. It's not walmart prices, but you're supporting a local business so it's worth it. Came in here for a deli sandwich so that is what this review is for. Walk up to the deli and order any kind of sandwich. There isn't any menu but it seems you can ask for any sandwich and they will make it for you. Tonight I grabbed an Italian sandwich. I like supporting the local joints so when I read in Yelp that they make sandwiches at their deli counter I stopped in for an Italian on a sub roll. I love a good sub and I'm putting this in my best list. It was made to order and came packed with four meats and one cheese plus the lettuce, tomato, red onion and giardinera. When the guy handed over the sub I thought it was on the small size but when I got it in my hand it had some heft to it. It was great and I'll be back for the sandwiches again and again. The chicken noodle soup is so delicious! I've brought my leftovers home and my son absolutely loved it. The turkey sub is a bargain for the amount of meat they add. You are able to build your sub with as many toppings as you like. The staff are always pleasant and ready to assist you in any way they can. This review is aimed primarily at the Lakeside deli counter. I don't really use the rest of the grocery store very much. When I worked in Winnetka, I got lunch from Lakeside approximately 4 days per week. I usually ordered a turkey sandwich, though I tried some of the other meats, e.g. roast beef, ham, sausalito turkey (spicy), and they were all fine. Most days they have fresh baked rolls available, you'll see them sitting on top of the counter; if the rolls are available, that's what you should get. Another highlight at the lunch counter: homemade potato chips. The fry those suckers in the store each day and cover them in tasty Lawry's-esque season-salt. Potato chips aren't a health food by any stretch of the imagination, and these ones certainly don't pretend to be; rather, they seem to have embraced the dark side. When you take a bite, you can usually see a greasy glisten at the edge of your bite... slightly disturbing, but that's how you know they're delicious. mmmmm, trans-fatty goodness. If your parents happen to have a charge account at Lakeside (like mine do), all that much better for you. read more

I have known this grocery store for more than 15 years - and I like going there. Yes, it is to some extend more pricy but well worth it, since you get treated with respect and like a family member. People know you, are happy to see you there and always have a moment to talk to you. I believe every single employee enjoys working there and that's why people love Lakeside! I'd also like to share a beautiful Lakeside story: My old pug lady and used to go everywhere together; well she sat in her pug stroller all zipped up, of course, however, we got kicked out of stores a lot but never out of Lakeside. I understand it is a food place and dogs should be outside but when you have an older dog well secured in a stroller all zipped up then I think it shouldnt be a problem; and Mrs. Pug could not hurt a soul-she always spread love everywhere. Mom and Pop to the extreme. This old school grocery store has everything you need and is a family run shop. What really makes them stand out are the excellent deli sandwhiches. I was introduced to them in the late 90's and have been coming back ever since. They slice the meat and cheese fresh per every order and the bread is always great. Growing up in Glenview, I never knew this place existed. Winnetka is not my neighborhood so a little grocery store like Lakeside can be easily overlooked. The other day I was passing through, looking for a place to get lunch, and Lakeside caught my eye for the first time. I love this kind of store that seems all too rare in the 21st century where huge chains choke the world. The deli crew makes tuna salad that has jalapenos in it and wow is it quality and delicious! If I owned Capt'n Nemo's sub shop down the street I would totally use that tuna in my subs! read more

I love this store. It is a small grocery store with service you cannot find these days. The butcher department has super high quality meats of all kinds. This store looks quaint and is perfect for running in when you need a few things but the customer service is terrible. Every time I've been there I've gotten a negative vibe from the cashier and bagger. They say what they're supposed to but in such a way that it makes me think they really hate their jobs. One cashier complained as she was ringing me up about a customer who came in to shop 10 minutes before closing time. I was speechless. What a difference from shopping at the Grand down the street. The produce department is minimal, as is the meat, but the meats look fresh and are of higher quality. The prices are high, as one would expect in a tiny local market, but I'm ok paying a little more if I get good service. read more

Our family shops at Lakeside very regularly, though it's not our only grocery store. The quality of the butcher and Johnson's seafood is the best I've found, and I shop around for high quality meats and fish. The deli is also high quality and a great deal for large sandwiches. While Lakeside Foods is small, they pack a big punch in the deli and meat departments. They carry Boar's Head products which are the best. They even carry some unusual meats (Salsalito Turkey and Pesto Ham) that no other stores seem to stock. They also have (and I say this unequivocally) the VERY best meat department on the North Shore. Gene, the department head, has been a butcher for nearly 40 years. I don't know who his supplier is but his cuts are amazing. We shop all over Chicagoland trying to experiment with new places for steak, sausage, fillet, pork and veal. None compare to Lakeside. Management is also very anxious to please the customer so if there is any other product you want, they will special order for no extra cost. If you mention that there is a staple that you and other customers would buy if available, they will stock. The only reason I don't give them 5-stars is because the fruit and veggie department is small and somewhat lack in the specialty items. read more
