Any business owner/manager that openly makes derogatory comments about their staff in front of customers is a poor excuse...Swain called one of his young (very bright and personable) workers "stupid" in front of us. None in my group are new to Rangeley, which is great place, with many great things to offer!...Sam-O-Set is not acceptable, nor is it the norm. If this place is your only option...get another option: rent a kayak, go swimming, go skiing, go hike Saddleback (it's awesome!), catch a movie...you'll be better off. The short-story: We (3 adults/3 kids) rented a boat for Saturday 7/23/11, which we were going to use for 1/2-day of tubing on Rangeley Lake. The boat (200 horse) sputtered and would not start reliably at the dock, so we tried to actually spend more $$ and rent a nicer boat. Seemed like a better option than getting stuck on the lake, having to be towed in...Anyway, Swain refused, and indicated it was our fault for the boat not starting. We wasted ~2 hours on a beautiful Saturday dealing with this a-hole....the boat wouldn't start for Swain either, we canceled the deal - which he botched too, ended up double-charging us...thankfully, it's all on a credit card, which is handling the correction.

We met Tanner at the Maranacook Lake (North) Boat Launch parking lot. We did the 1/2 days rental ($35 a boat) which included delivery and pick up of the kayaks. Tanner dropped everything off around 9am and then off we went. Upon returning from our adventure, we locked up the boats and texted Tanner. What a perfect way to get out onto the water! It's taken me a little time to decide if I should write this review or not. What led me to write it…read morewas Facebook. More specifically, the Maine Boat Rental Facebook page. I'll get back that in a bit. I rented the boat I'm writing about from August 15-17, 2025. First I want to tell you what happened and I will provide facts supported with pictures Maine Boat Rental provided me (actually a video of the boat before I took possession and several pictures showing the damage they claimed I caused). After returning the boat, I received an e-mail on 26 August stating, "This email is to confirm a one-time charge in the amount of $251.74 has been successfully completed. The reason for this charge was $26.74 GAS FILL, $175 BENT BIMNI ROD SCRATCHES ON REAR AND FRONT OF BOAT, $50 ADMIN FEE FOR CC FOR SECURITY DEPOSIT and is associated with your reservation CC A5L-GDV. If you have any questions, please contact Maine Boat Rental at [207-313-6248] and we will be happy to assist you." I immediately called them and they said the Bimini rod was bent and there was damage to the hull of the boat. I asked them to send me the video/pics and they did. Me being me, I looked at the pictures and then watched the video (the one taken before I rented the boat). I ended up doing screen-shots of the video. I compared the screen shots with the damage they said I did, then put an Adobe pdf file together to send them showing that EVERY scratch, gouge, bent rod, etc., was already on the boat. I sent that file to Maine Boat Rental and asked when I was going to get my refund. About a week later I received an e-mail from Nichoal that said, "After spending a lengthy amount of time comparing videos and pictures, I have found that the bimni bar was bent badly during your rental and the cost of replacing that is over $1,200. I have also found that there are in fact new scratches on the boat the worst of them down to the fiberglass and will require a in-depth patching process to ensure water intrusion will not happen in the future." I asked her if she saw the Adobe pdf file I sent her and she hadn't (remember, she claimed to have spent a "lengthy amount of time comparing videos and pictures" - obviously not looking at their own Facebook page). I again sent the file which clearly shows the damage they charged me for was already on the boat. Once she realized I did my due diligence, she immediately refunded my $175 in damages. Now, what caused me to write this review. I was looking at other reviews and their Facebook page. Facebook has 2 pictures showing their ski boats all docked together (posted on July 17, 2025). The last boat (farthest from the picture taker) is the boat I rented. In that picture, taken almost a month before I rented the boat, is the bent Bimini rod. The bend in the bar clearly matches the damage picture they sent me. That was the icing on the cake. How many renters have been charged for this Bimini rod they claim is over $1200? I have yet to find a Bimini top for more than $500 but that's not the point. The point is unsuspecting renters are renting from Maine Boat Rental and probably getting charged for damage that was already there. They probably charged every person that rented this particular boat, July 17 through now, for that damage. Pretty crappy way to try and get more money from people. I mean, $1000 for a 3-day rental isn't enough? I just caution you, if you're planning on renting a boat from them, to take pictures of every bit of damage (bent rods, scratches, prop damage on the engine, etc.). In fact, make sure the person from Maine Boat Rental dropping off the boat is in those pictures so they can see you took them before you got the boat not after the fact. The pictures I've posted - higher resolution pictures = damage they said I caused / lower resolution pictures = screen shots I took from their video before I got the boat. For the record, I did rent from them (I am Sean M on the contract and fuel receipt).

From the moment we arrived, their friendliness, professionalism, and attention to detail made the entire experience unforgettable. The only regret I have is not booking a full day -- it was THAT much fun! The trails are epic, incredibly scenic, and seem endless. The Polaris machines were in top condition and even came equipped with GPS, which made navigating super simple and allowed us to focus on the adventure. I was very dissatisfied with my ATV rental from 201 Powersports. The details of the rental weren't…read moreexplained very well, and 201 Powersports certainly didn't highlight the most important thing--your security deposit of either $1,500 or $3,000 (depending on whether you paid the extra $25 for the $1,500 option) will be taken for any scratches or scuff marks on the plastic body of the ATV. This should have been stressed, as there are many gates to get through that have very little clearance on the sides of the ATV, even if the ATV was completely square going through the gate. Regarding my experience, we stopped before every gate and passed through slowly, yet the plastic panels occasionally rubbed against the gate poles as it is very difficult to avoid. We used reasonable care while driving the ATV. You would think that with narrow passageways through the gates and the ATV being an off-road vehicle, scratches and scuffs would be expected. Not in my case. The "damage" was over $2,000, and my $1,500 deposit was fully taken. Apparently, the panels had to be replaced because of scratches and scuffs that were very difficult to avoid. 201 Powersports would not give me the old panels to potentially sell to offset the cost, as this isn't their or Polaris' policy. If the panels end up being replaced, I am sure the old ones will be repurposed or sold by 201 Powersports or Polaris. In addition to the above, when shown the ATV prior to use, we didn't get a walk-around to inspect the condition of the ATV like you would with a rental car. I would think that if the side panels were to come back in such pristine condition, this should have been highlighted and stressed along with mentioning the numerous narrow gates to alert the renter. If I had known that the gates were that narrow and that scratches and scuffs on the side panels would result in replacement at a high cost, I never would have taken this risk. Using the ATV for less than two hours ended up costing $1,825. Again, we used reasonable care and tried to be very responsible. One shouldn't have to be an experienced ATV driver to pass through gates. It wasn't reasonable. It seemed like a money grab, so please be very careful renting from 201 Powersports as it may cost you more than you expect despite using reasonable care. With the numerous and ridiculously narrow gates along the paths, 201 Powersports should expect scratches or scuffs on the plastic panels and/or provide an insurance option to cover such damage after stressing the renter's responsibility.

As soon as we drove past, I told my husband "Man we should've gone there instead!". It looks so nice and big from the road. That night, we took a moose watching tour. They stop for a bathroom break halfway through and this is the gas station they stopped in. The workers were really kind and fully prepared to handle the swarm of 50+ people all filing in at once. They have clean restrooms, a lot of snack and beverage options, and some good NH souvenirs. I definitely think this is the best option for a gas station within a few hours drive.

So sad to learn they are being demolished to build a Dunkin' Donuts. They've been my go to snack…read morespot for years for all of my hikes up that way.
