With the trees one is usually in the shade. A lot of people all hours of the day but it doesn't feel overly crowded. Don't let your dog in the lake or drink the water however, prone to poisonous algae. I'd say the only negative, and no fault of the park, is how many people choose not to clean up after their dogs. Wide enough for 3 across but the rules suggest 2 abreast as there are walkers and runners going both ways. A paved path and also a gravel path. It was a little cool at first but once we warmed up on the trail we started taking layers off. You're pretty much going up hill all the way. It got a rocky part of the way but not to bad. We would stop in the shade for a minute to cool off. Once you get to the trees you haven't much farther to go. The falls weren't as big as I thought it would be but still pretty. I mainly went for the exercise. It's a pretty good hike and I'll definitely go again.

Just an update from my first review 10 years ago…read more The walking path between the east end of Riverside Drive and the Booth Street bridge is now open!!!! The pathway is now double the width and does some gentle meandering around the trees. It will be a lot more accessible for people with mobility issues. The new landscaping is beautiful. The banks of the river have been raised and reinforced to decrease flooding damage. And just a reminder- dogs and other pets are still welcome and must be leashed or otherwise contained. Bicycles, scooters, and skateboards are not allowed. This is one of the top places to visit in downtown.

This beautiful area along the Truckee River only spans a few blocks but the path is a lovely 3.5 mile hike. There's plenty to do. A softball game was going on. The ice cream truck cruised through. Though older, the grounds are well maintained The trees, roses, and lawn are beautiful. I love going for a walk through the park on a Sunday morning - any time of year. The only thing that ever disappoints me is the behavior of some of the people who visit the park. I just spent a few minutes reading about the history of Idlewild. The park is about 100 years old. The first big celebration held there was the Transcontinental Highway Exposition in 1927. It celebrated two new major highways- 50 and 40. The California Building was built for the Exposition. I also learned that Idlewild used have a zoo and a fish hatchery, and the pool was initially re-routed river water and a few changing rooms. There were benches to sit at this park, but they had homeless people setting up camp on them. The park was mostly dirty with trash littered throughout. Several homeless people were lying in the grassy areas. There are no bathrooms at this park. There is no playground equipment at this park.
