My girlfriend and I, along with two of our friends camped here during a short holiday last weekend. We stayed at one of the tent or camper sites, and although it says it is for tent camping, we were the only tent in the area and it felt A LOT like camping in the middle of a trailer park. The lot was fairly small and not marked well at all. And to make matters worse, a neighboring camp group took up half of our lot with their 14+ party and 5 campers (complete with screaming kids). Oh and the campground is less than a mile from a busy highway, and although it says it's quiet hours are from 11pm to 7am, expect to hear loud atv's, motorized carts, and noise from the highway throughout the night Their "game" room was a bit of a disappointment as almost all their video games were out of order. Although there was a working Ms. Pacman and a nicely working SouthPark pinball machine which I enjoyed. They also had a serviceable air hockey, foosball, and pool table. Their main shower room/bathroom was disappointing. Only one toilet and two shower stalls (only one of which had a curtain, the other was right behind the door out in the open). It was fairly clean, but frustrating to share that tiny of a bathroom with many other campers. Guess they figure that most people camping there have RV's and will use their own facilities. The lake itself is fairly pretty, but a bit on the small side (only about half a mile long or so) and the swimming area had some neat features, like a floating trampoline, slide, and a large teeter-totter platform. but be aware there is no lifeguard and people fish in the lake, so the possibility of getting a fishhook in your foot exists, so be careful. Also, the water had a lot of algae and was very green and somewhat disgusting looking and smelled a bit. They also had kayak and peddleboats for rent, which is nice, but we didn't get a chance to try them out. The staff was fairly nice and friendly, although they should have offered us a different campsite or suggested an alternative once they realized that there was THAT large of a group camping next to us and spilling over into our campsite. But we didn't insist and our friends wanted to be near the showers/bathroom and the amenities so I am not going to hold that against them. They do have a store in the campground, which I thought was a nice touch, even though the prices are a bit high, it is convenient as hell and they had some good stuff there. The Good -Has a store on location and nice amenities. -Friendly staff The Bad -Crowded and Noisy, with campsites not being marked well -Lack of shower/toilet facilities -Have fire pits instead of fire rings, which make making campfires a bit more difficult -Lake has algae problems and the danger of having fishing and swimming on the same small lake So all in all, it wasn't a very enjoyable camping experience, and maybe the tent camping areas are much nicer, I kind of doubt it since they are even closer to the highway. This place seems like a seasonal trailer/RV park that has camping added as almost an afterthought. If you have an RV, this place might not be so bad... but for tent camping, I would say look elsewhere. The staff was nice, and the amenities were interesting, but not enough to make this place worth staying at again. read more

Lake Joy Campground: What a joy! We stayed the weekend before Memorial Day so there weren't that many other campers. We had sites 30 and 31. They were HUGE and just a few yards from the lake. Very few bugs were seen. Not a single person in our group got a mosquito bite. Not sure if they spray? But this was a huge plus! We were sad that the water toys were no yet in the water. Fishing was fun but only caught crappies. The office clerk was not the friendliest. I don't think he cracked a smile once. Cheer up Charlie-- You're at Lake Joy! The surrounding area is a lush hilly landscape with plenty of cows! read more

Have camped here several years in a row, and this year was by far the worst, and we will not be returning. Each year we pay in advance, yet each year when we get there, they find some reason to charge us additional fees. It's always something that costs more. This year we experienced theft 3 times!! I know the campsite has no control over people that are idiots, but when we mentioned this to them, they said there was nothing they can do. Porta Potty was full almost the entire time we were there (5 days) - they were not maintained well at all. They are pretty strict on "quiet time" yet there are golf carts zipping around past your site almost all night without a care in the world. For sure the "seasonal" campers run this grounds, not the owners. The owners have not once taken the time to come over and introduce themselves to our rather large group - even after being there the last 4 years in a row. They seem to only care about getting your money in the door. They also will spend an EXTREME amount of time chatting it up with seasonal campers well you stand in line waiting to be helped. I spent 20 minutes waiting for the owner to stop talking to a seasonal so I can get help. Then when I didn't get tags for my car - because he failed to give them to me - my car got tagged, and the wife told me that - "I need to make sure that they give me tags that they are busy and forget - we got one tag, they should of given them to us for all our cars - because we checked in with the owner as we arrived. The have a couple of parks for the kids to play on, one is just an old swing set, the other is very generic - definitely could use some updating. Swimming area is actually not bad - nice area for the kids to swim - great toys for the older kids to play with.. and nice large lake for fishing, boating and hanging out on the raft. Probably one of the better swimming areas I've seen at campgrounds. The campsites are actually decent size, we wanted lakeside sites, but for our group we had to be up off the lake, but our site was great to accommodate our large group. the bathroom is a MAJOR issue... you have to hold down the shower button well you try to wash - if you have a young kid - imagine having to help them, well pushing a button, well trying to keep them from escaping well you try to apply soup. The button is pushed and you get about 10-30 seconds of water before it needs to be pushed again - not ideal for handicap, young kids, or anyone really All in all the campsite could use some major hospitality training - they have enough staff that they should be able accommodate the number of campers on grounds, but instead your waiting around forever for help. Being a little more personal to your regular campers that come back every year would go along way as well. Lots of updates need to happen for the price they charge you ($30 per site for tent camping no water or electric). read more

Tent camped for 5 nights at Lake Joy this past week with my girlfriend, her daughters and one of their friends. Overall a positive experience, despite the extremely hot temps. The staff were both friendly and helpful; when we arrived and found the 2 sites we reserved were primarily in the sun and asked if we could shift to a couple shaded sites, they were happy to accommodate our request. The tent camping sites are spacious, well-tended to, and within a very short distance of both the lake and showers. Nice big shady trees to sit under and grassy areas for the tents. The girls loved the sights and sounds of the local wildlife: birds, rabbits, chipmunks, owls, etc. We spent a lot of time in and around the lake swimming, floating, kayaking, and fishing. The water had a considerable amount of algae and there were warnings posted telling swimmers to make sure to shower after being in the lake, but it was so damn hot we didn't care. I'm guessing the water quality is typically better and that the lack of rain this summer is the culprit. I'm not into fishing but the girls went out and caught a couple nice size bass; we also saw larger fish jumping out of the water while kayaking. Within a few miles are ATV trails, which a couple of us decided to bicycle on. The trail itself was nice, but know that the road to get there (Bethel Grove) is very hilly. It was in the upper 90's when we went, and they absolutely crushed us. My girlfriend said that the women's bathroom & showers were fairly well maintained. The guys side was marginal - the mold in the shower area on the first day was still there on the last day. Again, have to acknowledge that it was a very hot and humid spell, so can appreciate it probably doesn't take long for this to develop. My hunch is that during less hot times of the year the water quality is better and the showers are cleaner and if so this place would be a solid 4 stars. read more

My boyfriend and I had booked 2 campsites Memorial Day weekend for his birthday. We called a month and a half in advance, knowing this would be a high volume weekend. We told Gregg, the owner, we are not all above 21, and were reassured several times this would not be an issue. One day before our camping trip, we received a call that our booking has been canceled because of our parties age. It quickly became clear that it was not because of age and was most likely due to overbooking. The owner told us there was nothing he could do for us. He continued to call this a "mutual error" even though, we had mentioned several times over the phone. After telling me there was nothing that can be done, and my refund has been sent, the owner hung up on me. Canceling our booking that we had paid nearly $450 dollars for one day prior to is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. I checked my bank account, to find no refund yet. After checking the 2021 Lake Joy Campground Guidelines, I have found that it is not stated you are unable to have members below 21. I am extremely dissatisfied and will not be going here, nor will I be recommending this place to anyone. read more

My family camped this past weekend at Lake Joy for the first time (7.8.16/7.10.16), and we loved it! My kids aged 6-9, even said they enjoyed Lake Joy, more then Yogi Bear Park in Wisconsin Dells! We had site 5, located at the front entrance, and a short walk to the lake. We walked around when we first arrived, and were amazed at the hospitality, all the play grounds, kid friendly activities, cleanliness of the grounds. They had realistic rules, and everything at the shop, from bait/boat rentals to food/equipment, was reasonably priced. We enjoyed the hay ride Saturday evening, and then the movie Hotel Transylvania 2 that Saturday night as well. What a wonderful slice of heaven, we even had some pretty amazing neighbors. At night, quiet time was well enforced, which made for easy bed time for the kiddos. Sites are nicely spaced, even the primitive sites are surprisingly spacious. We hated to leave Sunday, but left with a wonderful impression, and lots of memories. We are hoping to return one more time before school starts! We stayed for the Fourth of July weekend in a travel trailer in a pull through site with water and electric there are no full hook ups unless seasonal sites. We paid way too much for a site that just has water and electric there was some miscommunication I thought it was full hook up when I reserved it. The bathrooms and shower area are really dirty and very dated very thin almost see-through shower curtains there was heavy usage because it was a busy weekend, but it doesn't excuse the fact that the water just trickles out for the showers. We tried to do some laundry because we had a bedwetting incident in our camper and all the washing machines were broken but there weren't any signs that said they were broken so we loaded our money in it and it wouldn't start we did get our money back but were unable to wash the items. The 2 beaches are very small and crammed. Staff seemed friendly but we didn't interact with them very much not very many activities scheduled to just a outdoor movie, hay ride, DJ dance. Seems like everyone has a golf cart and they're everywhere at all hours. We would not come back. Our automatic levelers did have a hard time leveling our camper in our site. We did have a very nice picnic table. read more
