I only needed a haircut and this was the only chance I got (I am a SAHM with 2 kids and minimal backup except this day) so I said I would consider it but I need a cut now. It was 6 months since my last. That must have just not been the right thing to say bc I was judged, insulted during the entire session and I got the worst haircut of my life. I can't even get it fixed because it is so much shorter than I wanted. There are huge "texture" discrepancies all over my hair, the most obvious being in the back near my neck. There's also a strand of hair far longer than the entire length of my bob cut. I don't even understand how this happened. I'm so traumatized. I would never recommend this place and will never ever come back. I really had 1 chance to get a cut as a treat to myself, since I really don't have extra time to spare. And now I have to live with this until it grows out, definitely more than 6 more months. If I could give -1000 stars, I would. Please do yourself a favor and find a salon that can do a nice cut for long AND SHORT hair. WITHOUT A PERM TO MAKE IT ALL STRAIGHT FIRST. The skill level here is just so sub par. I could have done it myself.

Reference this review and request her honest consultation for your intended style before getting a cut; I can almost guarantee you will be amazed by the end result. However, what ultimately made me leave a review was what Ai did NOT do. It was the fact that she advised me NOT to get a perm that day. I went to Laicale at the recommendation of a friend that goes there regularly. I was pretty wary, because I've been seeing the same girl for over a year, but she had a baby and moved out of the city. I was happy for her, but sad for me. Obviously I was nervous to try out someone new, as I'm very particular about how I like my color and my cut. So after my friend pestered me for weeks and my roots were ridiculous and unbearable, I finally sucked it up and called. I explained immediately that I was picky about my hair and very anxious about my new service, and they were really good at talking to me and figuring out which stylist would be perfect for me, but I was still really nervous after making the appointment. The atmosphere was really stylish and unpretentious. My stylist, Aya, was really thorough with her consultation, and after ten minutes with her I started feeling better and better about the outcome of my hair. After a couple hours, I was looking and feeling like myself again. I'm just so happy to have found a new stylist who can get my hair perfect again. She even showed me a quick and easy way to style my hair, so I don't have to fuss for hours to get that just-left-the-salon look. I will definitely be coming back regularly, and I really recommend this salon, especially Aya! She was amazing! read more

DO NOT Book with Fabrizio. I left the place in tears. Fabrizio cut about 7 inches off my hair when all I wanted was a trim. He didn't listen at all to what I wanted... I wanted a blowout however he insisted on using an iron, which would permanently straighten my curly hair. When I insisted on the blowout, he rushed the job hurting my head and leaving my hair frizzy with the ends destroyed. I came back to the salon with my husband and the front desk staff was kind enough to give me a refund and book with my usual stylist to fix the damage he did. Fabrizio saw me there, visibly upset, and he didn't even have the respect to approach me or say anything. I've been going there for years and always had an amazing experience. The staff is incredibly kind and Emilaino (who wasn't available this time) is by far the best hair stylist I've met. What a shame that the worst experience was served by the owner. TERRIBLE experience today. Definitely avoid booking with Fabrizio. read more

With regards to Vivian's review... Under normal circumstances I would find it rather cheeky to reply to a Yelp review, but due to the absurdity of this individual's remarks, I just can't hold back. I feel it's imperative to shed some light on this situation that is so absurd, I can't believe that Yelp has even allowed it to remain on their website unedited for indecent slander and trashy content (something that City Search felt was inappropriate enough to remove completely). More like a personal attack rather than an insightful review, Vivian's classy choice of vocabulary and impeccable spelling and grammar speaks for her quality of perspective. I think it is only fair that I inform the Yelp viewers of a significant component to this silly drama, which is the fact that this girl was a total and complete nightmare. I just pity the poor victim whose chair she sits in next. read more

Like most men, to me a hair cut was just a hair cut; nothing more nothing less. My brother would often criticize my hair cut, so I decided to finally go to his stylist. So, I was introduced to Emiliano. He has incredible technique and talent, and takes pride in his work. He was very understanding of what I did not want my haircut to look like, which I feel is very important. He gave me an opinion of what would look good on me, I told him to do what he thought looked best. After an hour of meticulous work the end result could not have been anything more. The haircut is awesome. Fast forward 1 month I've booked my second appointment with him and do not plan on changing him for another stylist. For those men who are not yet convinced or still hesitant, just do it! I have received countless compliments on my haircut, it brings you to a higher level of confidence. read more

I've been getting my hair cut at Laicale since 1999, so they are definitely doing something right! I believe the best aspect of Laicale, is the people they have chosen to cut and style hair. They gave me a beautiful layered haircut that suited my hair perfectly, and the blow-dry completely transformed it. I came into this appointment with a haircut I already disliked, but fortunately my hair was still…read morevery long and absolutely fixable. I spent a significant amount of time researching stylists because after a bad cut, I specifically wanted someone who appeared to have the technical knowledge and understanding to properly reshape and correct curly hair. Unfortunately, this has to be one of the worst haircuts I have received in my life. Right now I look like John Lennon's son if John Lennon hated his son and cut his hair with a blindfold. I explicitly warned the stylist multiple times that my hair is very curly and that even removing a small amount of length would cause it to spring up significantly. Those concerns were ignored completely. After washing and styling my hair myself at home, it became extremely clear that this stylist does not know how to properly cut curly hair or bangs at the level that should be expected from any professional stylist, especially one working in a NYC salon positioning itself as technically skilled. The layers are uneven, mismatched, and dramatically shorter than discussed. Even after straightening it, the result looks nothing like the portfolio work shown on this salon's website and is not flattering to my face whatsoever. I feel like a little boy vs a 36 year old woman. And an ugly one at that. After asking friends later in the night, even the people you would expect to say "oh, it's not that bad, don't worry about it" had the same reaction: "wow, absolute massacre." That honestly confirmed for me that this was not me being overly emotional or "not understanding" an alternative haircut. The cut is simply technically incorrect for what was requested. What made the experience even worse was the patronizing response when I expressed concern. Instead of listening, I was asked, "Oh, do you not like it because it's alternative?" No. I do not like it because it is objectively wrong for what I asked for. This was not an issue of personal taste or being "edgy." It was a technical failure to properly execute the cut, listen to concerns about curly hair shrinkage, and create a shape that works for my face and texture. It is also very strange to me that in a city like NYC, where salons position themselves as highly skilled and specialized, direct client feedback is apparently treated as some kind of attack rather than part of the job. A client expressing that something is uneven or not what they requested should not cause defensiveness, gaslighting, or attempts to reframe the issue into a personality problem. If a salon cannot handle one sentence of direct feedback without trying to psychologically flip the situation onto the client, that says a lot. There is something genuinely strange happening in a lot of NYC salons right now. So many stylists do not listen at all. They do not take the time to actually study someone's face shape, texture, proportions, or how the hair naturally falls. Instead, it feels like many are applying the same default haircut method to every person who walks in. Hair should be a craft. It requires attunement, restraint, observation, and critical thinking. Especially with curly hair, you cannot approach every client with a copy-paste technique and expect good results. This is not a small correction either. Because of how much length was removed and how curly my hair is, this will take months to grow out properly. I also attempted to contact the salon directly via email and received no response 24 hours later.

I explained that I was uptight and what I'd wanted from the other place as opposed to what I'd gotten and the fact that they nickel and dimed me for using their products. Arsenia listened carefully and then gave me her opinion. I have to say that I was more than pleasantly surprised. I have thick, curly hair that was overgrown as I searched for my next salon, but she was fearless. I thought it would take over an hour but she was so quick! No fear. In the past, I would rave about a stylist after the first visit only to go back and be disappointed so I wanted to be sure but everything was great.
