three plates of food on a table

Wow, if you're looking for authentic charcoal meats and middle-eastern style sides, Laheeb Grill is a great choice! They are relatively new (2 months old), and their owners are very helpful and patient. I tried: Lentil soup: a perfect start to the meal, this opened up my appetite and it wasn't too light as there were lentils inside the soup. The taste wasn't too salty, and it was comforting given the slightly rainy weather outside! Eggplant dip: this is my favourite middle-eastern dip, and I really enjoyed Laheeb's version. It was smoky, buttery, and had high-quality olive oil on top. It went really well with the pita bread and pickled veggies (turnip, pickle, onions) supplied. Hommus dip: great flavour, very velvety (not gritty), not too salty. Fattouch salad: I particularly enjoyed the slightly-sour/salty crispy bits of pita bread on top of this salad! Usually, I'm scared of fattouch salads being too sour, but this one was very balanced and fresh. Main platter with filet mignon, kabab, a lamb chop, shish tawook, and veggies kabab: WOW! This is the star of the show. All of the meats were very tender (only lamb chop had some slight gristle, but nothing major), and it was hard to decide on my favourite! The meats were not fatty, and were very well seasoned which I appreciated. The shish tawook was probably the best as the chicken was juicy and so flavourful (I want to learn how to make it at home)! It came with some fries which were thick cut and went well with the meat (dip them in garlic sauce)! Prices are reasonable and the owner told me they are freshly made to order. Atmosphere: There is sufficient seating inside to eat there, as it's best to eat the food while hot! The plates are disposable, which cuts down on costs, compared to having servers. There is also ample parking in front of the restaurant (it shares a large parking lot with Subway)! Service: A few minutes after I sat down, an employee came to my table and asked what I was craving that day, and gave a helpful explanation of the menu, emphasizing the low price of around $30 for 1 kilogram of meat! I met with the owner and his partner, and both were very helpful with the menu. I decided to let the owner decide what I should try for a more authentic experience, and it did not disappoint! The dishes were brought out quickly, and there wasn't that much wait time in-between dishes. He checked on me to ensure I wasn't missing anything too, and smiled often (which is important to me)! Note: I was invited to try their food, and really appreciate being gifted this dining experience! I will be back to bring my friends and family. I am already craving the charcoal bbq taste. Yum!

TL;DR/The Short Version: Deli serving up loaded sandwiches…read morein Hintonburg. A bit pricey, but tasty. The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

Prepare to be amazed............... We had heard about his place for months and how awesome it was so we finally decided to try it out. When we got there at mid-day on a Saturday there was a line up out the door. My wife suggested we go for a walk to let the line thin out a but. We got back and the line had thinned out so we went in. They have a set number of sandwiches and you can also make your own, but we decided to try their set sandwiches. I got the Parkdale and the Holland, my wife got the Bayswater, and we picked up a Scott for my daughter. When we got home, we were nothing short of blown away. The quality of the sandwich was amazing - the bread was light and fluffy, a ton of meat, fresh veggies, great sauces, just incredible quality. More importantly, fantastic value for money. Even more importantly, the staff were wonderful - they chatted with us but kept the line moving - super professional and friendly. The quality of the sandwiches here rivals Old Tyme - no word of a lie. The bread they use is very very close to what we had in Lafayette and the quality of the fillings is outstanding. Don't walk, run to this place. It will change your life for what you think about sandwiches.

This sandwich is literally the reason I downloaded this app…read more I've just spent the whole winter in Quebec and am now hitchhiking across Canada and decided to stay in Ottawa a few days. I booked 4 nights at the Saintlo jail hostel and when I came downstairs after a rejuvenating nap I saw that they had a list of recommendations sitting amongst a pile of other plastic sheets. Dirienzo's - the best ITALIAN SANDWICH in the city. I'm not really an Italian sandwich sort of person normally, maybe it was contributed by the burgeoning like for cured meats that I was acquiring after eating dried salami as my only source of food for the past week or so -- but who's going to pass up the chance to try the BEST of anything? I got there after taking 2 buses and was starting to become a bit concerned. I had $40 in my account and was hitchhiking across the country -- after all it was labelled the BEST in the city and that would normally come with a hefty price tag. When I first opened the door I instantly got greeted by the guy behind the counter, which made me feel welcomed and at ease. I looked up to view the selection of sandwiches that they had on offer and potentially the cheaper ones. I was surprised to see the sign that said $10 for ANY SANDWICH!! #booyah I was finding it hard to decide on which of the sandwiches to get since they all looked so appetising, but decided on number 16. The sandwich was massive for the price that it was. The bread was a perfect mix between durable so that it wouldn't fall apart in your hands, but soft enough that it was enjoyable, with the amount of bread contemplating he rest of the fillings just the right amount. I was pretty overwhelmed to be honest with how good it was. All of the ingredients including the lettuce (which I've found is usually the first thing places will skimp out on) were extremely fresh. I put in my coworker groupchat: "Anyone coming over across Canada after the season has to make a stop in Ottawa if they aren't already just to try one of these." Accompanied by a photo of my eyes watering with glee. My Nonna is always telling me how I need to learn Italian to be more connected to our culture and I've always just kindof brushed it off since I haven't needed to use it and we don't speak it much at home, but this has made me so proud to be Italian. As I continued to eat the sandwich sitting on a bench looking towards the city and the people playing basketball in the park, I found myself contemplating staying in Canada and raising my kids here in Ottawa so that they get to experience it themselves on a warm summer afternoon after picking them up from school.
