Hands down the best food we had during our entire trip. As our first meal was coming to an end, I stopped the server to ask to book the same time for the next day. Yes THAT good. 1st meal: - big salad, so big and a smattering of ingredients! Great acid and texture - salt pepper calamari, light fresh and great aioli - char siu salmon collar (limited), so smoky and rich, the second time we saw patrons coming in solo just ordering this and a glass of wine - halibut - beautifully prepared, a manicured versus of the steamed whole fish - perfect in every way - scallions, ginger and the light soy 2nd time: - big salad again! Bc we need our fiber - lobster roll, this was the Maine version which I had been avoiding - chilled with mayo, THE BEST version our whole trip! When in Maine, do as the Mainers do - crispy noodles with Jonah crab and corn, usually super greasy and too saucy at traditional Chinese, but this version - super light! And the crab corn combo - heaven - pole beans, no idea what kind of creamy soy concoction was on the veg, but WOW, addictive, saw the kitchen firing up a ton of these - got the salmon collar again, huge, but needed to pack it, we were stuffed! Tasted great a couple days later too Orange wines and other natty wines by the glass. Everything I tried was good. I never want to buy logo/merch - but after dinner the first night I made a mental note I wanted a tshirt to commemorate the meals. If we had more dinners available we probably would have come a 3rd time. Staff - warm, welcoming and professional. Gorgeous dried floral arrangements hung above the open kitchen and bar. This is a foodies paradise! And just a summer fling from May - October?! Should be around year round IMHO. This is astonishingly good fusion food with the bounty of Maine seafood. This would be at least a bib gourmand by Michelin standards. If I am ever back in Portland or if Chef Lau opens another restaurant - consider me there. read more

A friend invited me to dinner and suggested Ladyfish. So my first time visit. Location is center of the Old Port. Street parking and a garage is near by. Plan ahead as the Old Port can get busy. I discovered the owner is the same of Mr Tuna which I have enjoyed as a food truck. So looking forward to a great evening The menu is worth a full read to see the options from haddock ceviche to an incredible looking double lobster tower. Tapas style you get it as it's ready which adds to the atmosphere. I enjoy having food delivered over and over again to me. The staff is great and so willing to answer our questions about the menu. It was a great culinary evening. The presentation of each dish was spot on. The seasoning, sauces and spices were perfect for each option. The friend calamari was done so well. Not overly coated with batter and the sauce paired so well. The bluefish belly dish had the look of a veal but not. It was very yummy and the malaise was a new twist for us. They offer indoor and outdoor seating and table, booth and a bar area. Fun drink menu Dessert menu was fun but they don't offer coffee. Must be a reason but a nice warm beverages with our chocolate bunt cake would have been nice. Worth a visit. Prices are in the higher end but highly recommended for a romantic evening or dinner with a great friend. read more

Lady fish has a charming ambiance and the service is lovely. Food wise I didn't try enough to get the best read, but the scallops in a blanket and the jerk char siu salmon collar were both pleasant. I'd say it was a 3/5 overall for food and drinks, but I have to add a star for the shake 'em up fries. They're addictive! read more

Wow wow wow! This place far exceed my expectations, to the atmosphere, service, and food. Our server was absolutely exceptional! She was so kind and deserves such high praise. But the food...omg. Highly recommend the scallops in a blanket, by far the favorite thing we got. Also the sauce with the calamari...AMAZING! Honestly everything was so lovely and I selfishly want them to stay forever. This spot has a modern, trendy atmosphere, but the food didn't quite live up to the setting. The crab claws didn't taste very fresh, and the halibut was slightly overcooked. Considering the price point, I think there are better seafood restaurants in Portland that offer a better overall experience. read more

Ladyfish is a seasonal spot open from May to October in the old Bar Futo location and is a sister restaurant to Mr. Tuna. This place was very unique, especially with their seafood dishes. The scallop in a blanket is a must try, especially with the dipping sauce. We also really enjoyed the steamed bun with the uni butter. There's plenty of seating between the dining area, bar seating, and tables where you can watch the kitchen staff in action. Our servers and host were very attentive and kept checking in on us throughout the night. I really enjoyed this addition to Old Port and we'll definitely be back! read more

I cannot say enough good things about the Garlic Coconut Noodles. I would say that they might be my favorite simple noodle dish ever. The flavor and texture is perfection. Literally wouldn't change a thing! Definite 10/10. No notes. The woman sitting next to me at the bar was obsessed with the Hot & Sour Gumbo, so I will definitely be trying that next time. Very pleasant wait staff explained kitchen will bring food out as it is prepared. My two items came out long before my husband's food served. Ladyfish I sat at the bar and really enjoyed being able to watch the kitchen staff prepping food. The Garden Party spirit-free cocktail was delicious and refreshing. The halibut ceviche was amazing, and the taro chips were perfectly salted. The buns were light and flavorful. My least favorite was the scallop roll, which tasted more like the breading than the scallops. Overall, a really enjoyable meal and a fun spot to sit at the bar! read more

Thanks to the Rubins we get another creative chef from NYC. And Christine Lau is laudable! We miss Bar Futo but this makes up for it with unique tastes in food and drink. Always liked the space with long dog friendly patio and the staff was exceptional. Just about everything was a favorite: the halibut ceviche, tuna carpaccio, scallops in a blanket, eggplant dip. A big, tender piece of fried pollock was catch of the day for lettuce wrap, but we wished there were a couple more bigger leafs for wrapping. Mussels casino were a bit dry and boring. Drinks were great, especially the ladyfish martini. This strip of Fore street is a culinary delight. read more

Went to dinner here for their opening night! Everything we had was fantastic and so well done. I got a Maine Italian Martini which is their twist on a martini with amatos pickles which was a neat. We tried so many different dishes and all of them were great. My favorite was the scallops in a blanket. Everything is different and fun and great for sharing. Lots of seating and two big bars. Had high expectations.... But it was a big let down. It was extremely loud. Food was mediocre and the server was not friendly or happy.

I went to Ladyfish this Wednesday. Several people have said they heard it was really good. So I tried it out and it's REALLY BAD. The ambiance is good, It's cheerful and clean, the service is ok, but the food is bad, and it's expensive. I think the restaurant is supposed to be asian fusion. The menu descriptions do not give a clear idea of what the dishes are. A kung-pao tuna belly dish, prepared "milanese" style, is a wafer-thin and pretty small fried fishy pancake slathered in sweet and sour sauce with some kind of crispy vegetable noodles on top. It is $36 and inedible. They did take it off the bill which was good of them. My dining companions had a crispy noodle and chopped clams dish, barely edible, they were unwilling to finish the small portion offered. We tried "mussels casino". Over-breaded, over-spiced, where there mussels in it? 6 mussels, a lot of panko, no broth. The tuna carpaccio is a meager film of tuna topped with some kind of crunchy vegetables. The sweet and sour gumbo has a couple of bites of fish, maybe 5 of the smallest shrimp I have ever seen - popcorn shrimp I guess, lost in a very oily and salty sweet and sour liquid. It's a small bowl, but I couldn't get through it. There's an active bar and I think the restaurant serves far more drink than food. This may account for the baffling and inexplicably positive reviews. When my companions and I left we were irritated to have spent time and money at "Ladyfish", since there are several excellent restaurants right next to it. Don't make the same mistake we did - eat somewhere else. read more

Definitely a mixed experience. The food was some of the best we have had in Portland or anywhere else. Loved the eclectic nature of the staff, the energy of the space and it is beautiful. However, there were some kinks to work out. It was too cold inside, we had to put on our jackets. Service was friendly but did not check in frequently and never asked about our meals. We ordered a second round but got a different drink. We love small plates, but using the same plate over and over mixed the flavors of the courses. There were no great wines on the menu. The cocktails were incredible. 10/10 no notes. The food left something to be desired. Clam chowder was more soupy than creamy. The flavor was good and the ingredients were respected. Not a traditional clam chowder but this is what you need to expect about Ladyfish - the whole meal seemed like a Fernet infused acid trip from a bunch of exhausted high end line cooks at the end of the night trying to scrounge together dinner from excess ingredients in the kitchen. I love crab rangoon. I love American cheese. These two things do not go together. The umami powder on the fries and seemingly, everything, was a turn off. But I don't blame that on the restaurant. This specific seasoning just wasn't our taste. Fries were perfectly cooked though. Calamari was the closest thing to being fantastic, but it was ultimately brought down by being oversalted, and I say this as someone who freaking loves salt. The kung pao tuna milanese is a strange dish. If you wanted to actually taste the tuna or generally enjoy the meat of the fish itself, you'd be disappointed. The fish came in millimeters thick. There was either too much kung pao sauce, or it was way too pungent and concentrated for that surface area to volume of fish ratio. Mussels Casino were piled with a crumbly topping that was dry... making the mussels dry. After tip, this place ended up being 100$/person. They also add a 4% "kitchen wellness fee". What happened to the expenses of running a business being included in the price of the product or service? Don't like this trend. Mr. Tuna and Crispy Gai are amazing restaurants. Don't know what happened here. read more
