Every time I come to the shore, I always forget something and often don't want to either: A: make a trip off the island (a full day affair) or B: drive down to Surf City to the other stores there (could be a half day affair to get down and back with all the people and traffic). So instead I bike or drive north to this little store and pick up what I need (or want). They have shoes, flip flops, jewelry, clothes, and all kinds of trinkets and useful things as well.

The Islanders Store has been around for at least 30 years - at least that's how long I've been…read moregoing there. Located almost at the northern end of LBI in Barnegat Light, it is your "has everything" store. Lots of housewares, tools, paint - kind of like a mini-Target but not as large of a selection. You can also get keys made here. There is clothing. Nowadays it's mainly swimwear and LBI attire but there is some resort wear and flip flops mixed in. There is a back room of beach supplies - chairs, umbrellas, coolers. Right when you walk in are souvenirs and other beachy gift items. There is a health and beauty aisle in case you forgot to pack an over-the-counter medicine, need suntan lotion or bug spray. And don't forget the toy aisle, it also is pretty extensive. Prices are not too outrageous for a local store only open in the summer.

My two daughters and I went to do some Christmas shopping and ended up at Kohl's around 11pm 12/9. We were initially greeted by a 30 something , short haired Very kind woman with a heavy accent. The type of personality that any employer would feel was an asset to their business. We make our way through each area and end up in the children's department. Now let me just say I was not overly impressed with the " fashion" for this establishment in the past . Therefore I had not visited in quite a while. I also thought there prices to be insanely inflated. Well I do not know who took over, but the styles , quality everything were just stunning and needless to say now dangerous for me. Literally they looked to be right out of the fashion district . Never was I impressed with the blingy and kind of tacky or pre mature children's fashions. Not any more! What a 360 turn around! Children's clothing : GORGEOUS, FASHIONABLE yet CLASSY! Thank you ! finally! Ok so not surprisingly I hear " we will be closing in 15 min" . My tiny cart is overflowing and will barely spin it's wheels and so I book it to the woman's section, my last destination to check out the jackets on sale. A youngish dark haired woman ( possibly the manager) abruptly and rather rudely says " EXCUSE ME WE'RE CLOSING" . YES THANK YOU I reply. I am aware. Well I think what she really intended to say was ... your DONE, FINISHED , FINITO! Now go on your merry freakin way ! The woman continues to stand and stare giving me an evil eye. Now my children are expressing discomfort and I am feeling violated with my personal space. I make it to the register not realizing merchandise made its way out of my cart onto the floor and spilled into the passenger seat which had been empty. Two cashiers were at the register along with the enchanting " Ms Hannigan. The woman who rang me , older , possibly Latino MISERABLE as could be. After she was done and I was waiting for transaction to process she was staring at my cart so intensely then the floor even more so . I'm thinking get me the hell out of here. My 9 yr old brings to my attention merchandise that was on the floor .. the gift for my dad which was boxed quite large and heavy and a hat and scarf that had fallen into the seat. I said oh I'm sorry you missed these. The cashier ever so rudely says NO YOU DID NOT GIVE THEM TO ME. She said it as though I was trying to nonchalantly walk out intentionally with the merchandise . The other women next to her who I think is a manager , long blond hair very very sweet was trying to make me feel more comfortable as I think she too was taken back by the rudeness. Finally I am all checked out everything squished but loaded and the first " the store is now closing lady" ACTUALLY says " umm do you need to take that cart? Now my daughters as young as they are feeling not only totally uncomfortable but really bad for me , they start taking all of the bags out of the cart as I'm holding a large heavy box , my girls are half tipping over . I politely say REALLY? The nicer of the two cashiers., we'll call her Cinderella steps in and says "oh no it's fine take the cart. ( honestly, I was planning on it )The wicked step sister turns to look at her ., then back at me angrily as if I am taking up way to much of her time. That being said. I have been in luxury brand retail for years and NEVER in my life would I ever get in a customers face and make them Feel like a hindrance . In fact they want to stay a little extra because they are purchasing many items ? Well you know what it's more money not only in my company's pocket but mine as well! Job securityAs for the girl who we initially encountered at the back end of the store . PLEASE hire more like her.
