The dumplings were not steamed in banana leaf and just had shrimp in it. The shrimp still had tail on. I am a sucker for any kind of curry with bread and this goat curry with a side of bread is no exception. I could not stop eating. So much flavor and the bread was so soft in the inside and crispy on the outside- perfect for dipping. Food also came out very fast and everything was quick. We usually pass this restaurant and it's not super busy but today we decided to visit to avoid the lines at our usual place. Firstly, it is CASH ONLY. The restaurant as typical wasn't busy when we walk-in in so we were seated promptly. It's pretty clear that they do a lot of take out orders though which explains why there aren't many sit down patrons. The menu is pretty large and it has more Vietnamese entrees (note: there is no pho BUT plenty of other options). I went with my favorite grilled pork platter and their biggest platter came with shrimp and egg cake. I honestly can see why it's their most popular item because it's super flavorful and large portioned for $18! My partner got the beef stew with bread which was heavy on the star anise but the bread was perfectly crispy. We got the wonton small bowl as an app it was just ok. In order to pay, you walk to the back where the register is and let them know which table you sat at. Overall, it actually was a pretty good experience and we didn't expect much. Miss me with that little lamb hotpot and kbbq (I do love those things) and meet me at Lacay. Highly recommend the mi and the hu tieu, their specialties. Well-seasoned broth, seafood with a hint of natural sweetness, and a little bit of everything (shrimp, pork, etc). We've never had a disappointing meal here. We have, however, been consistently impressed by food quality and portions. It's clear the restaurant is not trying to cater to the Yelp crowd and I love it for that. Seeing Viet people at a Viet restaurant, as ironic as it may sound, is a rare and great omen of future deliciousness. Lacay Cholon is hustling and bustling with noisy Vietnamese chatter and multiple generations of a family unit enjoying Sunday brunch together. The one word to describe this place would be AUTHENTIC. If this place's decor was replaced with low tables and shoddily manufactured blue plastic children's chairs you could easily be in Saigon instead of Seven Corners. As nostalgic as the ambience is, it is really the food that instantly transports me back to my childhood and captured my heart. I've been told that excellence is just many little things done well. No where is that more clear than a simple bowl of wonton noodle soup. Don't confuse this with the wonton soup you get at Panda Express. Rather this wonton soup is bathed in a rich pork broth shimmering on the surface with a slick of pork fat. Each wonton is hand crafted and is paradoxically chewy and tender at the same time. The egg noodles are cooked al dente, the roast pork is delicate, and the shrimp is perfectly poached. Finally, the fresh bean sprout and garlic chives are not garnishes but the completion of perfection. The complementary shrimp fritter is so unnecessary at this point but very welcomed. While I sipping on the pork broth I was perplexed by these floating white bits of flavor. To my surprised, I was told these were rendered pieces of pork lard. Immediate FOODGASM..... What makes this place a true unadulterated Asian gem, also serves as points of criticism as well. What I mean is that this place would otherwise have 6 stars except that like many mom and pop asian shops this place only takes cash, total bummer, and their service leaves more to be desired. They aren't rude by any means--drawing an analogy to a call girl, this is a wham bam, no kissing on the lips, get in an get out type of place. The waiter takes your order the second you sit down, you get your food, you eat it and you leave. No water refills, no check up on how your meal was and you present the bill yourself at the counter. On our third visit, we ordered summer rolls, Com Dac Biet (rice special) and Hu Tieu Bo Kho (rice noodle beef stew). We get their summer rolls every time we come here because they taste just like they've been freshly made. None of the rolls from restaurants in Eden taste like that. The rice special has everything including the egg custard that you don't always get at other places. The beef stew is filled with tender beef and tendons. I hope the lady that gave them one star for the stew understand that she's eating tendons not fat. It's stewed just right and the broth is rich and flavorful. You must try it next time you come! I think their service is probably not top notch, as in they won't keep coming around asking you about how your food is, but they do their job well and efficiently. I used to loooove coming here as a kid! While I do not come as much as I used to at all, I make my way over here in Eden once in awhile and am never disappointed. The lack of atmosphere or any sort of ambiance at all may be a drawback for people who want glitz and glamour in restaurants. I would say Lacay is super no-frills and is solely just a place to get a great bowl of hi tieu (rice noodle). Every time I go in, it usually is not very busy. In fact, there will be three to five(ish) tables, at best. Everyone who IS there is very traditional Vietnamese. I do not think this is one of those hip/happening places in Eden that many non-Viet people flock towards. Service is okay here, I believe they are more comfortable with a Vietnamese person but they are still friendly. Remember, they are cash only and after you are done slurping your noodles you gotta make your way up front to pay! It is helpful if you know your table number but if you don't, as I said, the place is not usually busy so you can just do the whole pointing "I sat over there" thing. So, food! I only get one thing here, and that is their special, the Hu Tieu Lacay Dac Biet (or basically Lacay's Special Rice Noodle Dish). I like getting mine "dry" which means they give a small bowl of broth on the side, rather than pouring it on top of the noodles. **So this means you can get your bowl with soup or without** I also like to get the clear/chewy noodles versus getting the yellow egg noodles. I find that they taste better with the sauce and have a great texture. They give a sweet and salty sauce to pour all over the noodles, and sometimes I like to ask for an extra to have my bowl extra saucey and a tad salty. Squeeze the lime on top of your bowl and mix the veggies in for the whole she-bang! This Special noodle bowl comes with ground pork, shrimp, more pork, a crispy shrimp thingie, liver (I get mine without), and squid.
