Tragedy to Triumph: My husband and I got married in a two person sunset ceremony on the beach. After all the research I'd done my heart was set on Hartwood for our first special dinner together as husband and wife. I made our reservation a month in advance and made a notation that it as our wedding day thinking that they might do something special for us if they knew. When we arrived at the restaurant the hostess acted like we were lucky just to be in the vicinity of the restaurant. We were told when we arrived on time that we would have to wait for our table and someone would get a drink order for us if we could find a seat in the waiting area, which we also had to wait for. 30 minutes later, someone came to get our drink order. 15 minutes later we got it. 50 minutes in we finally got a table directly in front of the steaming hot loud kitchen. Not wanting to sweat through my wedding dress or smell like grilled fish at the end of the night we decided to pay for our drinks and leave. It was a Saturday night. Every restaurant was booked, and hot. So dismayed we wandered back towards our hotel. We decided to see if we could get into the beach front restaurant at La Zebra where we had an awesome lunch our first day in Tulum. Sure enough, we walked in, relayed our ruined wedding dinner story to the gentlemen at the host stand and we were immediately greeted with apologies for Hartwood's failings and promises of saving our night and making it special. Dinner at La Zebra was our favorite memory of the trip save our actual wedding ceremony. They rushed complimentary champagne into our hands, checked on us constantly, and made us the most thoughtful and delicious custom dessert. The food and service were the BEST we had on our trip and I can't say enough good things about the amazing food. In the end, we found ourselves exactly where we were supposed to be. We tell everyone who talks about going to Tulum to go see the guys who saved our special day at La Zebra! Thank you guys for such a memorable night! We had a very large group here for dinner with no rsvps. The staff were all very accommodating and really did an incredible job w making sure we were all comfortable and got what we wanted. The hostess actually even took a special order for my son becos hes such a picky eater! We're from NYC and we've been to many restaurants here who can barely hold it down w a party of 8 and more. They are always lacking in service such as not refilling the water when need to, or checking w us to see if we need anything or missing anything. Its either that or their food is rushed or cold by the time they bring it out. But not here! The food was very delicious, my fav was the tacos platter and the shredded pork platter. So delicious. You just can't go wrong with beachside tacos at la zebra. Fun atmosphere with music and some of the best tacos I've ever had. You don't even have to be a hotel guest to rent a cabana and enjoy some delicious pitchers of strawberry margs on the beach all day. read more

We actually had a great dinner here and were surprised it's not higher up on TripAdvisor. First, they have a yummy (complimentary) bread basket - something we never saw anywhere else in Mexico. Second, they're right on the beach. It was so relaxing watching the sun set as we ate. Third, the food was solid - we got the guacamole, seared tuna, white chocolate mole. Honestly, my wife and I were just looking for parking as we travelled deeper into the dust bowl jungle of Tulum. Beach and jungle, jungle and beach is what makes Tulum an interesting destination. Both beautiful and mysterious. It was our last night, not too late, probably around 5 when we pulled into an expansive lot. The valet said parking only for La Zebra. What's La Zebra? Well, we would later discover it to be an oasis of culinary delights, a white sand beach, swings, enormous lounge chairs and a staff that exuded service. We took a seat outside in front of the ocean and ordered a couple of margaritas. For appetizers we chose a beet salad and ceviche. The salad was bitter greens and beets with goat cheese. The ceviche was served with a cool verde sauce and tortillas. Wonderful. We decided to split the NY strip. Excellent choice. It was served over potatoes and jalapeños with a grilled onion and a mole sauce. Add a bottle of beer and a glass of red wine and it was around $120. A bit pricey for Tulum but so worth it. read more

La Zebra is an ideal daytime retreat and also a hotel of the same name. I was only visiting the restaurant and it is conveniently split into a more internal space and beachside tables, which were the ones we chose. We all had an abundance of drinks and ceviches and enjoyed their nice wooden beach decor. Food was good and drinks were even better, I thought that it was on the pricier side but nit excessively - that is what you pay if you want to sit beach front :-) read more

This place is beyond delicious! After spending a day at the Ruins, we couldn't wait for our dinner reservations at 8:30pm. We HAD to get food around 6pm... snacks became light meals. We had 3 salsas (one mild, one HOT, one similar to Chinese chili oil) which were all yummy. We ordered their guac (which is huge) and also their ceviche (which was less than desired). My biggest recommendations are the ribeye taco and the pork cheek taco. Filled with flavor, the meat was tender. The duck taco had some hard bits that we couldn't figure out. The corn side also wasnt really "Mexican" corn... it was extremely hard kernels and we couldn't eat. My favorite side was the chaya with spinach, egg and cochita cheese. YUM! If I ever come back, I'll definitely go eat there again. read more

I think the best beach cocktails in all of Tulum go to La Zebra. They take pride in each hand crafted drink thats extremely fresh, not too sweet and that's just to your liking. One of my favorite days was posting up at this beach, cocktail after cocktail and ending it with a massage and a smoke. I vacation well. read more

We stopped in here for lunch before checking into our hotel (not here). They have a nice breeze and great ocean view. We ordered off their breakfast menu. First, it took about 30 minutes to receive just my coffee. We asked and asked for it; before receiving two coffees. Go figure. Then after asking where our food was, a few minutes later our waiter came back to ask us what we ordered. Really? He said the kitchen did not receive our order. Well who's fault was that? We did not want to take the time to go elsewhere so we pushed them to get our food out right away. They have some fun sounding smoothies and water flavor drinks. We ended up ordering one. Everything that we did receive tasted great. Just be careful when ordering and that they listen and actually do their job. The worst service ever. They completely forgot about our food and kept lying to us that it was coming. As soon as we decided to leave after waiting two hours the manager came and started bringing the food out. The drinks will take forever we had to stand up and get them at the bar since the waiter was no where to be found. Once we got the food I would say it's below average especially for tulum standards. I just don't understand why this place gets good ratings. The food was just not good. It is totally American Mexican food and just not good. We have had such amazing food in Tulum and this place was not one of them. Tourist spot for loud Americans and not good food. La Zebra was our go to spot during our stay in Tulum. Everything we had was SO good and not as overpriced as many other places in the area for the quality of food, which made it even better. For breakfast we got the burrito and the cook's omelette, both with chorizo and both were amazing. For lunch one day we got the fish al pastor tacos and the steak tacos, also both amazing. Some of the best fish tacos I've had. Last but not least we got ~many~ drinks from the Mulberry Project beach bar which were bar far the best drinks you can buy in Tulum and some of the best I've had in my life. Drinks cost $270, which i thought was good for quality and compared to other places in Tulum. They also do 2 for 1 deals on Tuesdays and some other random days when business is slower. The concept of the bar is "build your own drink" with tons of different flavor profile options to choose from. If you were like us and had no idea where to start, the bartenders come up with great drinks based on things you typically like the drink. In general, the bartenders were super friendly, fun, and generous- always giving us tastes of extra pins colada and other drinks they made extra of, as well as shots on the house. read more

My husband and I went to La Zebra for our first breakfast in Tulum.The setting is beautiful! For the setting and service I would give it a four. For the particular meal, I give it a 3. My dish I didn't enjoy so much. I had the tres leches pancakes. It was served with slices of fresh fruit and a side milk cream to use as the syrup. The pancake was a bit dry. I wasn't able to distinguish the tres leches flavor of the pancake. I would like to give it another try next time I'm down there. read more

The rooms and beach are amazing. The staff is wonderful and the vicinity is incredible. Only drawbacks are the mosquitoes so bring repellent. Went for lunch and to use the beach with my family of nine. They were able to seat us together. The tables are all beautifully painted. I could've spent an hour just looking at them all. Not much for young/picky kids to eat. We ordered a pitcher of sangria and a bucket of Indios. The sangria wasn't mixed in the pitcher so the first glass they poured for us had all the wine and the rest were mostly juice. The totopos and salsas are presented nicely, but if you like your salsas hot you'll have to ask. I ordered the fish tacos and while they weren't the best I've had, they don't disappoint either. They are beautifully presented as are most things here. Skip the pear/goat cheese salad. Sangria is $$$ I gave five stars because their beer is reasonably priced for a "beach beer" and the beach is still wide here. They charge a minimum 500 pesos per person to use their seating which is reasonable compared to other places but they don't allow you to go through to the beach without paying, which is absurd. Amazing Hotel and Restaurant! This was my first visit to Tulum. I searched dozens of hotels, crossed my fingers and booked La Zebra hoping for the best. I can't imagine staying anywhere else! This place was way over priced, the food was horrible, and the drink didn't have a drop of alcohol in it. My stomach started hurting half way through my meal and I couldn't even finish it, woke up the next day with major stomach cramps.
