In June 2022, our 16-year-old home-schooled daughter decided to prepare for the CHSPE instead of the GED, which she began studying for last school year. In August, she signed up to take the exam in October. After spending the rest of summer navigating all she could get her hands on at the local library and working with those materials all on her own, she asked us if we could engage a tutor to help her with specific areas she was not confident in. With only a month and a half to fine tune her skills, we managed to find LA Tutors 123 while looking up information related to the CHSPE exam (GREAT blog entry from them on the CHSPE exam!). I'm pretty adept in researching companies and noticed that LA Tutors 123 had received very high marks for their tutor services from various sources. Intrigued, I submitted an inquiry related to their CHSPE tutor services. Within a couple of hours, I had received a call from Eric Kim, ready to discuss where my daughter was at academically and set up a roadmap to prepare her for the CHSPE exam. After sending us an initial diagnostic test, Eric suggested that we engage with one of their seasoned CHSPE tutors, Tony. This ended up being a perfect match. Tony came to our home twice a week, for 90 minute sessions, until my daughter's exam day. Tony was punctual upon arriving each visit and custom tailored the areas of focus of the diagnostic test results and my daughter's specific questions. Eric and Tony worked amazingly well in timing the practice tests, providing feedback and results based on those tests. With session updates from Tony of each morning's visit arriving in email by end of day, it was a great communication tool for us to dialogue with our daughter on her progress in between sessions. Based on those consistent updates, we were able to communicate with Eric our daughter's request to take an additional practice test outside what was suggested. Getting closer to the test date, Eric sent all materials very timely and provided results in the same fashion which was valuable in time managing key areas my daughter needed covering. Tony was effective in communicating concepts, covering material and never seemed rushed to move on until my daughter demonstrated comprehension and understanding. Tony was a good listener and very patient with my daughter's inquiries and he too asked questions when clarification was needed. Tony's maturity and experience in teaching was evident! My daughter was not educated to be a test taker so her needs were not just honing certain concepts for a test, but how to manage her time with test taking. Tony's techniques in those areas helped my daughter keenly. It was great that she learned those concepts from Tony firsthand as I am sure she will carry those for a lifetime. Also worth noting was the flexibility both Tony and Eric demonstrated when two personal appointments, booked months in advance, conflicted with the prearranged study sessions and meeting times. Response times to accommodate were expeditious and plugged in well, according to the remainder of sessions to the test date. Long story short, she PASSED the exam on her first try!!! HUGE THANK YOU to LA Tutors 123, specifically Eric and Tony, for their assistance on getting my daughter ready for the CHSPE exam!!! Our family chose LA Tutors to help prepare our daughter to take the ISEE test (with a focus on math) and wholeheartedly add our 5-star review to the rest! While I initially felt some hesitation towards what seemed to be their high price for tutoring, we moved ahead and felt the investment was completely worth it. Program Director ERIC KIM was so helpful, always accessible, quick to respond, answering our questions and guiding us throughout the process. After discussing with him our daughter's personality, study habits and what we were seeking in a tutor, he connected us with a perfect match for her/us. LETICIA SOTO FLORES was warm, supportive, encouraging and good humored. She helped our daughter methodically review past lessons as well as learn new concepts not yet covered in school. Letitia worked with our schedule, even if it meant crossing town in rush hour traffic or interrupting her Saturday or Sunday midday. And, she even made herself available via Skype several evenings during the final week before the test. The company offered various opportunities for free diagnostic testing as well as info about testing dates, best timeframes for testing and school deadlines for submission of test results. Our daughter took a diagnostic test sometime towards the end of the 7th grade school year, then did a once a week tutoring session with some follow-up homework throughout the summer and into 8th grade. We chose for her to take the official ISEE test in mid November (allowing us time to prep to take it a second time, if we so chose.) We were all VERY happy with her test results, especially her improvement in math. Eric didn't think more study would necessarily increase our daughter's scores significantly. He suggested we consider submitting these results to our prospective schools and dropping our tentative plan to take the test a second time (even though his company would have been able to charge us more money had we continued our lessons.) We took his advice and were glad to enjoy Winter Break free from ISEE study, and for our daughter to be able to accept an unexpected invitation to travel the weekend in January when she would have had to do the test again. Based on her scores, Eric recommended which of the private schools we were considering might be most interested in offering a space to our daughter. (Our middle school principal had advised that no matter how much you tell your kid their chances of getting accepted to a particular school are next to nil, they still feel bad if/when rejected.) After touring numerous private and public schools, including magnets and charters, we applied to four excellent private schools. Our family was delighted to be accepted by three and waitlisted by one! Ultimately, we enrolled in one of the three, where our daughter will enthusiastically be starting in 9th grade this Fall.
