Tucked right in the heart of Siena's Piazza del Campo, near the Palazzo Pubblico, La Trofea delivers what I can only call my redemption day for pizza in central Italy.
After trying a few slices in Rome that didn't quite live up to the hype, I finally found what I was looking for here. This place completely reset my expectations.
The moment you approach the counter, you're greeted by a fast-moving, slightly intimidating but clearly experienced staff member calling out "buongiorno" while listing off sandwiches and pizzas. It's a bit of controlled chaos, but in the best way. I had already spotted exactly what I wanted before stepping inside, so I walked straight in, pointed, and said, "this one." It caught him off guard--in a good way. He quickly told me it was pepperoni with spicy peppers, which sounded perfect.
Within minutes it was heated and ready on the counter.
I grabbed a quick photo because it genuinely looked worth remembering, then took my first bite--and it delivered immediately. The pizza was served hot, but not so hot that it overwhelmed the palate. The flavor came through cleanly at first, then the heat from the small red peppers slowly built with every bite. That balance of spice and savoriness is exactly what makes a simple slice memorable.
It was excellent.
The shop itself is small but efficient, with some indoor seating that's perfect for escaping Siena's chilly air--and probably even better on the rainy days that are coming. Everything about it feels like a quick, no-frills stop that somehow still manages to stand out in a city full of incredible food.
I'll likely be back again after visiting the cathedral.
