A very nice Italian restaurant on King William St. Very friendly and responsive staff. First of all I should say that their pizzas are quite average, but the pasta is probably the best. I have been there several times. Personally I just love the chilli prawn spaghetti. Most of the main courses are a bit above the average mainly lack of proper seasoning. A nice little restaurant on King William St. While I find their pizzas quite average, their pasta is probably some of the best in Adelaide. I have been twice. The first time I tried a Margherita pizza and it was decent but by no means extraordinary. Alfonso's on Hutt Street has nicer dough and flavours as does the EST Pizzeria. Toppings were generous though and there was some good flavour. The bruschetta was a huge redeeming factor though as the tomatoes were very fresh and the bread was well cooked. I tried this the next time I came back and it was just as good. The staff were very good the first time round and were acceptable the second time around. Not sure why but there was no complimentary bread the second time around even though other tables got some. The second time I decided to give the pasta a go and this is what boosted this place from a humble three stars to a more respectable four. The ravioli in Napoli sauce had a rich taste with excellent flavours. Just adding a small amount of Parmesan and pepper was enough to perfect the dish. For around $18 as an entree, the serve was the right size and the pricing was very decent. All in all, the restaurant was cozy and nice. I recommend the pasta over the pizza and hopefully you go on a day with attentive staff. read more

There were many positive reviews regarding "La Trattoria" in King William Street and this assisted in our decision to give it a try. After some digging, I found out that owner Andrea was born in Messina, Sicily. He made a name for himself in November 2004 while in New York when he entered the 'Best of the Best' Pizza Challenge held in Times Square. Andy was crowned the Best Pizza Maker in the world for his Marinara Pizza. As a Melbourne boy, "La Tratts" reminds me of a Trattoria that you'd find in Lygon Street. Front of house staff were welcoming and being a quiet night we got seating easily. It must be said that the restaurant is very large and has plenty of seating inside and out front. I ordered the Pizza "Mediterraneano" After seeing the photos of "Andy's Marinara" I couldn't justify the cost of that Pizza. Yes, maybe I'm just a Pizza snob, but in my personal opinion and it's only MY opinion, I expected to see more fresh seafood on that Pizza. My Mediterraneo arrived and visually it looked good. It had a medium base and very good taste and texture. Not salty or not bland! Artichokes, Ricotta as well as the Italian Sausage featured prominently on top and the eggplant layered underneath which meant it retained its delicate taste. This was an 11" Pizza and if I can be a little critical, at $27 (as at 02/11/2015) in my opinion pricing is a tad high. In this price range, I'd expect a wood fired Pizza over an oven cooked Pizza anytime. A version of this cooked in a woodfired oven, would have intensified flavour further and the taste of those toppings would have gone to another level. Remember, this is my personal opinion only. Having said all that, it's a good Pizza and the others who dined with me rated their's good as well. Not much to say here other than 'La Tratts' is an Adelaide icon. First of all let me start buy saying they have very old fashion waiters who don't take any attitude, so make sure you play by there rules! Play along and have some fun with them, I have heard a lot of people complain about this aspect of the restaurant, but in my mind i think it add to the whole experience. Authentic Italian food that has never failed me. My pick of the dishes would be the Calzone, which I've had on many occasions. If you are a pizza fan make sure you order one of these too because they are world renowned. Its always a good idea to book a table, especially on Fri, Sat nights because it gets really busy. At the end of the day its nothing too fancy but its good honest italian food at a reasonable price. There is also an option of BYO, but I would always ask when you get there how much because it could change. (because the wine list IMO is the one area they could work on). Oh and if you get seated outside don't be disheartened because they have extremely good portable heaters and its a little amusing trying to guess which people are about to walk into the Club X thingy next door. I've walked, driven and tramed (yes tramed is a word), past La Tratt as the cool kids call it, for years and have always wanted to go. Well I'm happy to say it didn't disappoint at all. I ordered the marinara and it was delicious, the only downfall was a couple of the cockles hadn't opened during cooking and they had been left on my plate. I have been eating at La Tratt since I could manage solids and there is a reason for this. La Trattoria is without a doubt the best typical Italian restaurant in Adelaide. Run by the same family for almost 40 years it has a lot of history and an enviable reputation. It is not high-class, interpretive, experimental cuisine, but it is consistently gastronomical nonetheless (my picks are the spinach gnocchi or penne alla panna, but I'm just a big fan of rich and creamy, and their bolognese is second only to your own mothers (but it's close!)) If you're more of a pizza fan, this is the restaurant for you. La Trattoria is famous for it's world winning pizza (literally). I also make a point of ordering a bruschetta at any Italian restaurant I visit, be it locally, nationally or internationally and their tomato and basil bruschetta is absolutely second to none (particularly when tomatoes are in season). The service is top notch; friendly, accommodating, charismatic and the owners work the floor with everyone else. Best of all, you can eat without breaking the bank. Word of caution, this is a popular restaurant and if you're thinking of going prime-time consider making a booking (although the owners are likely to make room for you regardless!) Whether you're a local or just visiting Adelaide for one night, if you're craving traditional Italian this is THE place. read more

It's always a challenge to decide between Andy's Marinara Fresh Seafood pizza and the Spaghetti Marinara so it's best to split them with someone to get the best of both worlds. Having taken an overseas visitor here they were completely in awe of both the above meals, and the genuine service and especially with not being bothered having to respond to: "is your meal alright"? Ofcourse it is and La Trattoria know that it is damn fine indeed. You walk-out of the place in a very joyful mood indeed. Their menu adorns a wall in our office in Denver, Colorado with the expectation that it will be a great day when all staff can have a staff lunch here. I'm in the middle on this place. I've had some great and some not so great experiences here, but more often than not I find the food and service really enjoyable, and that's why I keep going back. Yes, the food is a tad expensive, but there are some really nice dishes on offer. I usually go for a pasta dish rather than pizza because I think for the money I feel like I'm getting better value. We were only in Adelaide for a few nights and after reading reviews we decided to give this place a try. However after arriving I wished we gave this place a miss. We made ourselves known at the bar and they advised someone would be with us shortly and a few moments later other couples had lined up behind us. The waiter bypassed us and served the couples behind us before attending to us. I don't want to make this about race but when I looked around and realised we were the only ones in the restaurant of our descent then I'm not sure if this was just a coincidence. Once we were finally seated, the food came out quickly and was quite impressive. We ordered a side of garlic bread, Andy's seafood pizza and the risotto. This place was hyped up to me by a couple of people, so I checked it out. I really didn't like it that much. I didn't hate it, but I think that it was probably a victim of its own reputation. If I'd been expecting something very ordinary, I would have probably given this place an extra star. The food is, really, very average. I had a medium margherita, and it wasn't much under $20. I've only been here once - the night I went it was busy and full of families having functions. The kind of families you imagine to have that rowdy, all inclusive, food based gatherings that you hear come from places like Italy and Greece. And I really liked it!!! It's always a good sign when a restaurant is jam-packed (especially at 9pm on a Thursday night)! Haven't been to La Trattoria in a few years, but it was just as good as I remember. They were crazy busy, but service was still good, the waiter in particular was great. The food was delish! I love artichokes, so the fact they do an artichoke pizza was a real plus. It was great. I've been here for coffee, meals, take away and seen the 'Tratt' grow and expand over the years in ways that suggest Council laws don't apply to them, and perhaps it is their esteemed clientele that has had a 'hand' in that turn of events, given their proximity to the Courts. I guess I've had different experiences on different occasions and 3 stars is a kind of fair summary. It's good Italian focussed food but not refined and not something out of grandma's pot. Prior to last weekend I would have said their pizza stands out but our order wasn't great, not the best tasting and something closer to Pizza Haven. Their coffee was still good with a nice robust Italian hit. I've previously heard their veal dishes are excellent so decided to try on this occasion. My rather small piece of veal was well covered in a cacciatore sauce, and in fact there was much more of it than the meat. The side vegetables were steamed well. It was pleasant but more of a sauce with meat than meat with sauce and certainly not memorable. I kind of like the pokey old house yesteryear celebrating old Italian soccer wins décor, although my colleagues didn't, but what did stand out was our young waitress. Very polite, friendly, attentive, mature beyond her years, and even when things seemed busier or got confused, such as getting the wrong order, she remained calm and controlled. 5 stars to her. read more

It's true, this place does have a reputation to live up to and that can be a problem as it is what it is. Those of us who go back week after week find the idosyncrasies and foibles charming, like a lover who doesn't see the inadequacies and bad habits. I love the staff. The male waiters who never change... the slightly peculiar small bloke who works the tables outside like a consumate professional. One time he easily remembered the orders for our party of sixteen without so much as touching a pen. When we expressed our respect, he told us that his record was 32... and this is not a small menu either! Granted, there are some dishes I hate (like the gnocchi w/ blue cheese - it's too rich for me) although others love it, and some I love, like the penne broccoli thingy which I ask for as such... they always seem to know. Salmon linguine and the canneloni, all delicious. Perhaps this is one of those local institution places that outsiders never really understand. If viewed with fresh eyes, I'm pretty sure I'd judge the place to be tacky... but I can't, I just love the place too much. I also stand in awe when on busy saturday nights they extend their seating to consume the sidewalk in front of the two or three adjoining businesses. Can I just say... How good is their website? Simple, easy to navigate through, black and white base colours with links that change to colour when you roll over them. I'm sorry, I just find it really cool! This place is super duper Italian. The food is authentic and rich. The service is friendly and thick-accented. The pizzas... Are all that matter, really. I seriously love all their pizzas, but especially the Americana - I love salami and simple ingredients. Their coffees are delicious too. Located on King William St, parking spots are available all around and it doesn't get horridly busy. Don't get me wrong though, it gets packed but has just enough buzz and a busy atmosphere without being irritating. I arrived at the restaurant on a Sunday night at about 8pm and was promptly seated. The service throughout dinner could have been better; it started off well with the menu / water / bread coming out quickly, but then once I had my food, the servers didn't visit me again until I had to call them over to ask where to pay. I ordered the spiralli con salsicce for my main, along with a glass of red wine. The meal was a good size and arrived quite quickly (I had hardly started on my bread by the time it arrived). However, I felt that the pasta dish itself was nothing memorable. The ratio of pasta to other ingredients was a bit too high, and the quality of the ingredients didn't seem that much different to what you could make at home. The one exception was the mushroom, which was delicious. Overall, I felt that the meal was a bit overpriced, given that I felt like I could have just purchased the ingredients myself and made something similar back home. read more

My dine-in experiences at La Trottoria have always been fine. Good service, good pasta, good atmosphere. That's why last night's take away experience was a surprise. A vegan pizza. Straight forward I thought. I'd go the Pizza Vegetarian minus the cheese, perhaps substituted with some eggplant or something. No cheese. No worries. Extra eggplant. No worries. That will be $2 extra thanks. Any business can have any policies they like. As a consumer I don't have to provide them with my custom. However, I've always thought places that do this a bit cheeky. I am asking for something with X value to be removed, surely adding something of similar or less value ought not warrant a surcharge. If I went in and asked for a vegan pizza--and they knew what I was on about, which is something I assumed they wouldn't, so didn't bother--I am pretty sure I would have gotten something at a more appropriate price. This shows a lack of initiative and interest in satisfying the customer. Some places I have eaten at, where I have asked for modified dishes, have been straight onto me. "Oh, you're vegan? I know just the thing!" I don't expect all places to be like that. I just expect a little bit of thinking outside the box, especially when I am trying to help. /rant read more

It's not often you will catching me splurging out on Italian food, I often feel like I can't walk after a huge bowl of pasta, this is a feeling I like to try and avoid. When the moment takes me La Trattoria is Italia divine. I have noticed on the occasions I have dined here that there are claims of the "best Pizza in Adelaide" now I haven't tried their pizza but I've already had the best elsewhere so it just cannot be true. besides, dining out on pizza is not something I would normally do, pizza is a couch & movie food to me. My advice is to try the Roquefort Blue Salad, it's basically lettuce leaves drowned in this blue cheese dressing, it's very rich so don't try to eat a whole salad to yourself! If you're not a big eater, keep the mains to an entree size, I'm a big eater and I can't finish a main size pasta dish. For entree, The Bruschetta Monte Bianca is absolutely sensational , laced with tomato, basil and bocconcini. My favourite though, is the old school waiting staff, it just makes it that much more an authentic dining experience, and the wine list holds no complaints from me. read more

Truly terrible. Had high hopes. Service was good. Ordered the perch, fish of the day, chicken con pollo (which means chicken with chicken), spaghetti Marinara. The only good thing was the spaghetti marinara. The avocado chicken and fish of the day came out with grilled cheese on top and plonked on soggy chips. I felt I was in a fish and chip shop. The fish tasted old as well. Food. 1/10 service 7/10 atmosphere 4/10 (toilets were filthy) and presentation 1/10 sad I was looking forward to eating here won't be returning. read more

Was excited after reading the reviews but sadly disappointed when we are there. Marinara was bland and the salt and pepper calamari had no flavour.. Oh well. The waitress seemed a bit rushed and wasn't as attentive as you'd expect, but some of the cooks or owners picked up on it and helped us with some of our additional requests. My husband proposed to me here..,.Although it could use a makeover it still has some old charm and I can't fault the food. Hot rolls with olive oil and vinegar yum! Very nice pasta, never tasted the pizza before .
