This is a really fun place to go to... but I would avoid it during busy times because the staff becomes very unfriendly when it is busy. My friend and I walked into the store during a busy time and we started walking through because no one greeted us at the door and we just wanted to see if our friends had arrived yet. Then a staff member with rainbow glasses, came over to us and asked us what we were doing, and we had explained. We were just looking around and trying to see if our friends had been seated. They interrupted me and rudely stated " well that's not your job" " you've obviously never been here before" I come here all the time, times at which I've been able to seat myself. After I told them that we had been there. And knew what to do. They still explained it to us with a very condescending tone. It didn't ruin my day, but it did put me in a sour mood for a little bit. To that staff member: you are unnecessarily rude to me and my friend, and it made me really upset because I tried to then avoid you afraid that you would say something more mean to me. It's a pottery studio. You need to chill the fuck out... i'm still coming back to use my punchcard again, but I'm going to try and avoid you at all costs. read more

I've been here multiple times, and overall have had very good experiences! It's a little different than other places I've been to. It seems like there is less independence for the visitors (workers bringing you brushes, colors, etc.) which is something I don't love. But all you have to do is ask and they are usually very helpful. They have side rooms for larger groups that you can book ahead of time, but if they are not reserved and you come with a large group, they will place you in there. One of our favorite winter time activities! After moving to Wisconsin we realized we wanted more fun things to do which didn't involve being outside. We love to come here and paint some pieces to add to our growing collection of fun dishes at home. The staff are very helpful in introducing you to how to paint the glaze. They are dry to help when you have questions or want to try a technique like wiping off a color so there is a peeking through effect. Generally, the experience was fine, but it unfortunately was not the experience we expected. This place is not a sensory friendly place if you are noise sensitive. They have hair dryers in every corner of the room to dry pieces between coats of paint. In my experience, this is unnecessary and just caused an excessive amount of noise. It's also a little disorganized as you have to wait for supplies to be brought to you and wait for someone to come check you out. Good selection of ceramics though and otherwise a fine experience. read more

Perfect little date day w my kiddo! He loved the choices of things to paint and had a lot of fun.

We were told to pick out our pottery pieces and sit anywhere. I noticed the people sitting around us and even people coming in after us were offered smocks while no one asked us. Someone came over and told us the process and had us fill out a ticket with what color paints we wanted and what type of pottery we picked out. You then have to wait for staff to bring the supplies out to you and then also have to wait and ask around if you want a different color or clean paintbrush. Came back today as we were told that we can pick it up on Tuesday. The guy running the pickup area said that he can't find our work and that we weren't specific enough on the order ticket, and that we should've painted our initials somewhere on the bottom which no one told us to do this before. I'm confused because what was the point of filling out the ticket if it's not going to be kept with the pottery pieces? There were so many finished pieces with no indication of who they belong to because the order ticket doesn't go with the piece. No refund was offered, nor did they offer to ship our pottery to us once theh found it. Too disorganized for the prices they charge. Especially coming from out of town we now have to travel back here next week in hopes that they somehow find it. If you want a smooth experience I recommend Just Kilin Time in Menomonee Falls. As it's a newer modern building, more spacious, cheaper, allows you to pick out your own paint and supplies, and picking up after is never a problem because they keep order tickets with the pottery pieces. read more

Great place to spend a couple of hours for a date or time with your kids. Hubby and I spent a couple of hours here on an afternoon date and had a wonderful afternoon. If you aren't familiar with the concept, you pick a piece of pottery (plates, spoon rests, bowls, ect.) and you paint it yourself. If you pick acrylic paint you can take it home that day, if not it takes a few days to get your item. They supply the paints, brushes and advice. Once you pick out your item (a ton of choices) then you sit down and they will bring you a choice of colors to choose from and they will bring the paints to you. I chose a coffee mug (20.00 plus a 5.00 studio fee) and hubby chose a plate (can't remember but I think it was 15.00 plus studio fee). I am totally not blessed with it comes to artistic skills and I love that they have really knowledgable staff to make suggestions and to render technique advice if needed. It took us about an hour and a half and we had a great time talking and painting. It is a small space so I could see if it was a busy day that it may get a little loud but it was slow when we were in. Our pieces will be finished by the end of the week....can't wait to see how they turned out! read more

Unfortunately the person who was working at the time was rude and snappy. I did not feel comfortable and I wanted to leave halfway through my pottery. There was no creative freedom and this person micromanaged everything my group did. Asking any questions or making suggestions was difficult because the person working would not let you get a word in. This is definitely not the attitude you should have in a business especially one that targets kids and art. After they had left and other workers came in the vibe shifted into a positive light. We really want to come back here because it has the potential to be enjoyable. I understand this business tries to provide methods to teach people how to paint their pieces nicely, but it shouldn't be mandatory to only do it one way. Art is expressive. The prices are wonderful, the paint is good quality, The customer service needs work. read more

I really enjoy coming here. The stock changes often enough, so whenever I come in there is something new to see. The price is reasonable. If you expect to pay what it costs to buy a mass produced plate from Target then you might be dissapointed, but for a fun afternoon and getting to use any of the high quality glazes it's a good price! The staff will help as much as you need, which oddly is not how it is at other places like this. Even if you feel you have no artistic bone in your body the staff WILL try their best and help you make something amazing. Really fun place to do pottery painting. They have a huge assortment of pieces you can paint/glaze (animals, plates, pots, frames) that range from $5-40 depending on the size. There is a $5 paint fee per piece for unlimited usage of paints and brushes. The girl working there gave really good tips on how to dry brush and make my rooster look more rustic with fluffy, 3 dimensional feathers. Cannot say ENOUGH about Mz. JoAnne and her shop. What a grand experience!!!! Brought in a piece of Talavera Mexican pottery, a 3ft parrot that I purchased in Phoenix. Had UPS send it home and YEP, you guessed it my parrot broke in 2!!!!! A tail and a body. Took it in to Mz. JoAnne and in about 10 days and very reasonably charged to repair, my parrot is ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY GORGEOUS!!!!!! One cannot even tell he was broke in 2 pieces. A wonderful and marvelous repair!! Great place for all ages- especially on rainy days. Loved that we had the option to use acrylic or glaze paints, and only had a $5 ($3 child) sitting fee- so if I didn't finish today I could've come back for another day, for only $5 more. Went to La Terraza for bachelorette party weekend. We sat in the back room and enjoyed a feast of treats from Metro Market while waiting for everyone to arrive. The staff was friendly and attentive, and provided lots of guidance. They explained the different kinds of paints, particularly the crystal exploding kind, which was a big hit with our party. There was a HUGE selection of pieces to paint - mostly figurines and decorative pieces. There was a hole section that was just Christmas. And it was good to know that if it was something that wasn't going to be eaten off of, then they could use an acrylic coating that didn't require glazing, and you could just take it with you - I'd never been offered this option before, but I think it's a great idea. I actually suggested this activity so that I could make a coffee mug, and I was happy with their unique selection. Most of the girls in my group went for something decorative, but we stuck to the food safe paints. We're looking forward to seeing the results! read more

Paint your own ceramic places have come and gone through the years. I had thought this fad went out in the eighties but apparently not. We visited La Terraza for a Cub Scout project and fun outing for our boys. They can accommodate 1 person to a large group of people / kids. Price includes the item you pick to paint, all the paints and glazes needed, brushes and smocks. The staff is there to help if needed and give you tips and pointers on how to make your item look the best it can. You can choose from fired or non fired items to paint. If you choose one that requires firing after, it is ready in just a couple of days for pick up. I found the prices to be a little high but I guess when you figure in the cost of the materials (paints and glazes) I can partially understand. Great concept and my son loved it and asks to go back all the time. This could make a great outing for Girls night out, sleepover fun time, play date outing, rainy day nothing to do outing. I took my niece here for some pottery painting recently. Basically you pick from a huge selection of pottery pieces (from $4.00 up to $50.00, depending on the size of the piece), grab a seat at a table, and start painting. They will give you all the supplies you need : smock, paint, paintbrush. They did offer some direction but it's not like they were hounding us the entire time, which was nice. When I needed to ask for help, they were around (even with a big birthday party in the other room). All in all, it was a positive experience for my niece and myself. I would like to go back again with my other niece and nephew, however I would definitely make it a point to bring enough money. It's not super-expensive, but if the kids pick out some bigger pieces (easier to paint), it will definitely add up very quickly. read more

I took my kids here for something to do on a rainy afternoon. They carry a wide selection of pre-made ceramic pieces or you can bring your own in. My daughter chose a vase, my son chose a lighted skull and my other son chose a plate. I selected an urn for our dog that we recently cremated. The workspace is good sized. The staff provides direction if you need it. We were making all decorative pieces and did not need food safe glaze. We did choose to have our pieces fired. We were able to pick them up in one week. Excellent place to take kids for arts and crafts day! You buy a ceramic item that can either be painted and glazed (which takes a few days and you pick up later) or just paint, let dry and take the item home same day. We glazed our items as they were plates, bowls, and mugs, and they turned out fantastic! Prices are affordable and you pay a flat fee to use as much paint and brushes you need to finish your product. Picked up the items a few weeks later (my fault, they had it ready later in the same week) and the items were better than I thought. They do have an additional room for classes or kids' parties. Do NOT take children here. They have zero patience for kids and the space is much too small. It's easy to knock something off the shelf just trying to walk through the main work room. Wait time for firing can be 1 week. Prices are very expensive. Off street parking is ok. La Terraza had a very unique selection of pieces and it was cool to have the choice between glazing and acrylic, that's something we had not seen before. The exploding crystal paints were definitely a hit with us and also something new too us. However, although the staff was friendly I didn't feel confident in working on piece due to the lack of explanation. Once we got started it wasn't often that our table was revisited to check on our needs. Often we had to walk around the studio trying to find an employee. We didn't receive napkins to wash off our paint brushes, which made painting difficult. And our water was not changed so it started to ruin the paints. The speed of the turn around is very nice for glazed pieces. read more

Although I have been to this facility a handful of times (I keep giving it another try), this review will speak only of my most recent experience there. The facility feels cramped and if there are several groups of people there at the same time (as there were today), it gets hot in there and you have to maneuver carefully through a maze of tables in a very small space everytime you need to dry your piece and then make your way back to your workstation. The general appearance of the shop is messy and unkept. There was garbage and other debris on the floor in several areas of the facility. Particularly where the finished pieces are kept and the payments are made looked in dire need of a housecleaning. Initially there was only one employee leisurely making her way around and trying to help the different groups, so we had a few occasions were several minutes lapsed while we waited for her to be available to give us our next instruction or the particular supplies we needed. She eventually called for assistance, which I believe came, but I could not tell those helpers from other patrons. While I have tried this facility on several occasions due to its proximity to my house, any future pottery painting excursion will instead be worth the longer drive to (a clean, extremely friendly and helpful staffed) Glaze in Thiensville. read more
