We visited The Broadmoor with guests over MLK weekend and chose to have lunch at La Taverne. Unfortunately, the experience fell short of expectations. One member of our party ordered a burger cooked well done, which typically means fully cooked through but not burnt. Instead, the burger arrived severely overcooked and blackened on the outside. We also ordered desserts from the lobby bakery and asked that they be served after our meal. One of the desserts was delivered with a hair in it, which was very disappointing. My friend and his fiancé who happens to be my birthday twin came here to celebrate our birthdays. The restaurant is located within Broadmoor and it opens at 5 pm for dinner. We came a bit early to look around the Broadmoor. We found parking in a nearby garage in the P2 level. It is a higher end restaurant as you would expect inside Broadmoor. The restaurant has a dimly lit part and another part where it is brighter with chandeliers and a more open seating. Even though we had a reservation, I don't think that was enough to put us in the patio area. Not sure what the issue was when we got there at 5 pm, the restaurant was completely empty, but the employees had a rough time showing us to our seats. They told us to follow and then said to hold on so we stood in the middle of the restaurant for a little until they showed us to our seats. They have a good selection of beverages, cocktails and wines which we skipped. We got two appetizers: tiger prawn cocktail and an artichoke flatbread. The tiger prawns were very meaty and was the best thing I had during this meal. I read that a lot of people enjoyed the prime rib here so I decided to get that. There are two sizes La Taverne (10 oz) and Broadmoor (12 oz). I got the 10 oz size and it was plenty to keep me full. It comes with a fully loaded baked potato and a popover. I was impressed with the popover being so big and light. The fully loaded potato was so big that I could not finish it. The prime rib was tender and cooked as I wanted it (medium rare). My wife got the mushroom bolognese. As far as that dish goes, the pasta was undercooked and tasted like raw dough. There was also a bit too much of wine taste as if they poured too much wine and rushed to make the dish. This dish was a 1/5. My friends got the herb crusted salmon and a wagyu burger. The salmon was slightly raw according to my friend and there was nothing to write about as far as the burger. The fries were cut in between shoe string and julienne. We got a coke and ginger ale. Our server gave us a new cup instead of just refilling so that was nice. We had complimentary desserts at the end. I got the strawberry puff pastry. It was too decadent for me and I could not eat more than 2 bites. The puff pastry was incredibly hard and I was not able to break it with the utensils provided. The service provided was great overall. However, considering that we were eating at a higher end restaurant, the taste and quality of some of the food was mediocre to terrible. Probably would not recommend to get the hot foods. Maybe stick with the raw food like oysters and prawns as they seem to not be able to cook things fully like the salmon and the pasta. read more

Man, I REALLY wanted to like this place because I love supporting The Broadmoor and their Herculean achievements in training their staff in a refreshing and uncommon excellence that's just not seen anywhere anymore. But alas, they apparently forgot to focus on the kitchen staff? Somehow our LUNCH bill managed to reach the heights of $200 for soup, salad and an entree. No drinks! It's one thing to pay good money for an excellent meal, but literally everything we ordered was sadly, yet incredibly, subpar. The French onion soup was overly tangy and they clearly didn't use Gruyère . I didn't even finish it. Our salads desperately needed an acid like a champagne vinegar to wake it up but there it sat all dumpy, bland, and hard to finish. We both ordered the fish (I think it was grouper) and it was just ok. But not ok for The Broadmoor and a $35 price tag. They served it with some sort of odd, soppy low flavor-profile mushroom and peas situation. We stopped by here for lunch while staying at the hotel (located inside of the main entrance to the right) and it was a good experience. The ambiance is a little confusing - it's like a whiskey creek when you first walk in and then there's an atrium if you go to the back of the restaurant which seems like the better place to sit. I had the Shrimp Salad and my husband the Bisque and Club Sandwich. Everything was good and the servers were very attentive. There must've been something going on and the staff fell very behind. It set the tone for the rest of our occasion. I have been coming here every year and the quality of food and selection is always above par. Their signature item is the French Onion Soup! Must try. This beautiful restaurant, nested inside the Broadmoor is absolutely beautiful with amazing food and ambiance. Every year they have something different so it never gets old. La Taverne is inside the Broadmoor. It's a beautiful restaurant. I've attached a picture of our menu. First course was a choice between dungeness crab bisque and french onion soup, but both were over salted. I got the bisque and while it was creamy and had a few chunks of crab meat, the salt really overpowered everything and i could only eat a few bites. They also served bread, but the bread itself was quite tough. For my entree, I got the halibut en persillade which was also very salty. The green sauce was also not my favorite (zucchini puree) but it came with a tomato and saffron "broth" which was pleasant. I heard that the colorado red bird 1/2 chicken entree was good, but I didn't get to try it. For dessert, the waitstaff didn't really wait for people to order their dessert early on or prompt people to choose a dessert. So a lot of our party didnt get dessert (even though it should 100% be included anyway, especially in a pre fixe menu).... but I managed to get the cremeux a la vanille et aux fruits rouges. This was probably the best part of the meal, even though i wasnt a huge fan of the crust underneath the cremeux. I also got a lychee spritz which was yummy! No flaws there. We had an early flight into Colorado Springs and this lunch was our first meal of the day. The restaurant had a beautiful sunroom where we ate. I ordered the French onion soup and you guys... they gave me fancy scissors! I was like umm what even is this for? It's for the CHEESE! The soup was the best French onion I've ever had in my life. The scissors actually were very handy to cut the cheese as I ate the soup. We also had shrimp cocktail and my bf had the steak. Everything was great! First of all, it's the Broadmoor so the service is always on point. Love the solarium/conservatory part, that's where we were seated last night. Very airy and light. (My only complaint would be the AC, oh boy was it blasting!) Certain things on the menu are go-tos for me. I usually get the prime rib, it's the best in town. The loaded baked potato is also good, as is the popover. We also tried the carpaccio and tuna appetizers. YUM. Dessert was the chocolate royal. Rich but not too, and perfect for sharing. If you're vegetarian or vegan your options here are extremely limited. Thankfully I saw one option on the menu: mushroom bolognese. They were able to make the dish without cheese and it was pretty good. It would be nice if more options could be added to the menu and ones that would include plant based protein. He was funny, nice and attentive and gave great recommendations. Half of our table ordered the French onion soup. It was delicious! The cheese on top was perfectly crusty and they gave you scissors to cut the cheese pull with. I ordered the scallops for dinner and my husband had the short ribs. My scallop dish was delicious and perfectly cooked. The sauce in the bottom of the plate was scrumptious, I could have had that as a bowl of soup! This restaurant is inside the broadmoor. It should have 4-5 star rating but it's barely a three......here's why. We came with a group of 27. We made the reservation over a month before we arrived. That means the kitchen should have been aware and ready to handle our large group. It was also a Tuesday night. The menu was set. An appetizer, main and dessert. The appetizer took a long time to arrive. Let me back up a bit, the server took a long while to take our food order and we ordered all courses at the same time. The appetizer then took a long time to arrive. Then it took a long while for the main course to arrive. I ordered the prime rib, which when it arrived was very undercooked. I get prime rib its supposed to be rare but this was 1-2 steps below rare. I had to send it back. My potato was covered with enough sour cream for 4 potatoes. Everyone else who ordered the prime rib had to send it back as well. The service was ok when he was around, it would be long gaps between anyone coming to check on us. For the amount of money they are charging the service should be more polished. The level of service was on par for a mid level steakhouse not a high end one. The wine list was basic, should have been much better and also very overpriced. And they were missing a lot of our preferred choices. Overall food was average or worse almost raw. Service needs to be more polished. They need to speed things up or plan better. Also they charged us 26 percent gratuity!!!! That's the most I've ever seen for a large group in the regular dining room not a private room. Improve the wine list. Barely a 3. That's me being nice. We come to the Broadmoor about once a year and usually do our large family dinners at the Tavern (La Taverna). This evening our waiter Roy was on point with our service and more than accommodating to requests and making sure the kids were happy. For those of you who do not have kids, there is some anxiety with taking the younger ones out to a nice dinner as they can easily derail the evening and having staff that make sure they are having a good time relieves that pressure. We ordered a variety of items including steaks, some vegetarian pasta's, pork chops, and a few side dishes and everything was delicious. My tenderloin was cooked perfectly to a medium rare and the bearnaise sauce was exactly the rich and creaminess that I was craving. The atmosphere at the tavern is also great and the fact that they have been serving patrons at this location during times when most arrived by horse or train adds to that old world nostalgia. I would argue that they also have some of the best french fries as they are shoestring cut, crispy, with just the right amount of salt. read more

Maybe our expectations were too high... but it is the Broadmoor! I've had lots of Restaurant Thanksgiving Dinners and this just went to the top as the worst ever. It started with a rude hostess who decided that our request from a month ago for a garden table was not noted and our punishment was to seat us at the entrance door to the restrooms. Now the dinner! The bisque was both cold and tasteless. The salad was ok but nothing extraordinary. The turkey was served in large slices, was dry and had maybe a table spoon of gravy. A table spoon of mashed potatoes with a 1 inch square of rock hard dressing was on the side. The little cup of cranberry sauce was more like juice, watery and no cranberry pieces. Green beans were blah. The little frozen pumpkin pie desert was inedible! This restaurant is a staple at the Broadmoor, timeless and unchanged for a 100 years. Even some of the dishes remain unchanged since the restaurant opened. Our favorite was the prime rib. Not fatty or overcooked and it came with sides. The seafood was very fresh and delicious as well. Which surprised me considering that seafood and Colorado Springs are not synonymous. Just off the lobby of the Broadmoor Resort, a really solid choice for a meal. Hand crafted cocktails and seafood are the highlights. My son, daughter and I dined here, we all gave it 5 thumbs up! My son had his first ever Kentucky Hotbrown, which made me so "really" since he was raised in Kentucky. My daughter and I opted for French Onion Soup and Seafood Martinis. La Taverne turned out to be our least favorite restaurant at The Broadmoor. We had made the reservations over a month in advance and arrived just before our reservation time. The restaurant was busy but not near full. Still, we were sat at what we considered a crappy table and no real better options to move. We were also probably the only patrons adhering to the published dress code on their website, with a sport coat and a dress. One would think we would get a good table, but nope. The restaurant really has no ambiance that I could detect. It is basically a long rectangle with the end of the rectangle being a glass covered patio. It had the feel of a very casual western bar to us vs. a nice upscale restaurant. Service was slow and not very attentive, although she was very friendly when she did come by. The Broadmoor restaurants automatically charge you 20% for gratuity up front and this was the only Broadmoor property where I felt they definitely did not deserve 20%. However, you can't put in a negative "additional tip" which is always offered or at least I decided not to try! Wine and cocktail prices were high, and I made the mistake of ordering a double at our server's prompting and received what I would have considered a regular pour for Buffalo Trace on the rocks. We started with the shrimp salad appetizer. This was very good, but a ridiculously small amount of seafood for $24 (they slice the shrimp in half to make it look like you are getting more). The dinner salad, entree, and dessert options on the menu were not really to our liking - which is unusual. My wife had the mushroom ravioli, and I had the Colorado trout. The ravioli was rich, but bland and the trout was dry and over cooked. No dessert tonight for us. I would not go back. read more

We were at the Broadmoor celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and ate at La Taverne. First off, the food and service were outstanding. Servers were super friendly and there for your every need. We had the smaller seafood platter to start and then scallops and filet. Sides were great (truffle fries and mushrooms). Dessert was also great (vanilla pot-de-creme). Some photos below. A couple things - if you are going to be there on a weekend make reservations several months in advance. I mean like 4-5 months. Pretty much people make dinner reservations the same time they make room reservations. What a lovely venue! While attending in conference at the Broadmoor, we were looking for a nice lunch venue. La Taverne was available. I was immediately impressed by Michelle at the host stand. She had a lovely disposition and smile. We were led through the gorgeous, dar, pub-style interior to the beautiful winter garden with furniture and decor reminiscent of a French Café. We had the most lovely waitress, Narumi. She was joyful and obviously happy at her work, which is not common these days in the service industry. We ordered the Bean Stew Soup and the Caesar Salad to start. The latter was a good standard Caesar with a nice anchovy. The latter was fantastic. It was flavorful and well balanced. I appreciated the hot sauce, but would have preferred one other than Tabasco. I really do like Tabasco, but its very unique vinegary flavor adulterated the taste of the soup. Another type of acid and heat may be a better choice. Jack had the Boeuf Bourguignon, and I ordered the Seafood Platter. The stew was delicious, homy, and typical of a Bistrot. My platter was spectacular with 3 oysters, several Jumbo Shrimp, and a crab cocktail. Accompaniments were lemon, a mignonette, house-made cocktail sauce, and a Louie dressing. The dressing was a little unbalanced which was easily fixed by adding some lemon. The quality of the seafood was superb, as was the service by Narumi. She is definitely a keeper. We loved the lunch so much, we made reservations for dinner. The dinner menu is more steak oriented. I went with the hangar steak which was executed beautifully, and Jack had the fried chicken which was tender and juicy. Fantastic service was provided by Caleigh. All Broadmoor restaurants add a 20% service charge, which, as I understand, is distributed among the staff. I am not a fan of pooled tips, although in this case, I do understand that other staff delivers the food and takes away the plates. They, for the most part, act more like "busboys" and do not seem to have the same customer service oriented demeanor. read more

We've been to La Taverne at The Broadmoor a few times and have always had Tyler as our server. Not only is her personality infectious, but she's knowledgeable about the menu, the hotel, and the restaurant itself. We love coming here to see her as we know we'll be welcomed with a smile! She made such an impact on my husband and I during one dinner and we knew we had to have her at our wedding - and she made it happen!! She showed up, again with a smile, and made our night. Nice ambience especially for the courtyard like Le Jardin room with the seasonal floral and wall painting of Seine riversidewalk, panoramic skylight and stunning 16 foot artistic chandelier. Although the restaurant is renown for its steak, but some of its French plates for lunch are also quite good and more in tone with the surroundings. Heard most of the wines here are over 15 years of age and the restaurant was opened by Penrose as a response to his objection to the prohibition. The Bottle Alley right by the restaurant shows the wines served during the prohibition years. The service is up to the standard you would expect from Broadmoor.
