This was after waiting at the door for 10 minutes and in the waiting area for 20 minutes. It took 30 minutes for our drinks to arrive after ordering. I was so thirsty I started drinking from the water bottles we had brought with us. The food, surprisingly, arrived not too long after a basket of chips and salsas was brought to the table. I noticed the next table over got their basket of chips and salsa before us (and before their drinks). We ordered agua mineral, enchilada mole con Pollo, dzitnup, jugo verde, molcajete mexicano, and Milanesa de pollo con papas. Food prices were decent (MX1230 for our meal and drinks).

The kind of setting that makes you slow down whether you meant to or not. Romantic without trying too hard. The food? Solid. Confident. Proudly Yucatecan. Sausages with snap and smoke. Poc chuc--citrus-marinated pork, kissed by flame--bright and satisfying after a long day wandering ruins. And the beef pibil, wrapped in that earthy, achiote-stained depth that tastes like it's been cooking since before you bought your plane ticket. Not fussy. Just honest, regional flavor done right. Presentation was sharp without being pretentious. Plates came out looking like someone cared. Service was efficient--no hovering, no theatrics. El Meson is clearly a tourist destination: literally every diner I saw during my meal was clearly not a Yucutan native. However, if you are looking for familiar food in a restaurant with helpful staff, and you are exhausted from your day trip, then you won't go wrong with El Meson del Marques. We started our meal with a couple of the delicious Mexican margaritas (not too sweet, and just as I like them!) accompanied with some tortilla chips and Sikil P'ak, a delicious Yucatan appetizer dip of crushed pumpkin seed, roast tomato, various herbs (often chive; I like cilantro, which El Meson included), all crushed in a mortar and pestle to produce a roasty, slightly chunky dip that is delicious with the ubiquitous tortilla chips. When it came time to order the main course, my husband, who didn't want any more Yucatan cuisine tonight, ordered the salmon. The helpful waiter asked him how he would like this done, and he looked at me in bewilderment, never having to answer such a question about fish. "I'd like it cooked," he said. I immediately had visions of overcooked salmon, and quickly added, "Medium, not overcooked.". He was pleased with the finished product, cooked but not dry! I took a risk and ordered a specialty, the "stuffed cheese". The waiter looked at me hesitantly, and then quickly filled me in that this dish is a bean stew, with a cheese rind. Having done some research into Yucatan cuisine, I knew that incorporating the rinds of Edam cheese into stew is a very traditional approach. The stew arrived, with a big thick cheese rind. I probably only ate half of it, not because I didn't like it, but because the helping was huge! It looked like an innocuous bowl of soup, but just half of that bowl ate like a full meal. Wow. This is a somewhat pricey (by local standards) but good, reliable, very touristy restaurant which will offer you familiar Canadian or American dishes as well as some genuine Yucatan specialties. Service is as polished as it gets, in a dining room with spectacular decor and a wide ranging menu with plenty of choices.

Crusty bread, insanely flavorful meat, avocado, pickled onions... the kind of sandwich that makes you stop talking mid-bite and nod in respect. Zero fluff. All business. Then the salbute showed up. Soft, puffed, fried perfection topped with chicken, lettuce, tomato, and avocado. One bite and I knew I wasn't sharing. Out. Of. This. World. They casually drop a bowl of minced onions on the table like "do what you want with this." I did. On everything. Plus two salsas that had real personality--one with heat, one with attitude. Washed it all down with agua de horchata that tasted like it was made by someone's grandmother who takes zero shortcuts. Easily the best I've ever had. Simple spot. Serious food. Masculine portions. Wife being a vegetarian, we were very skeptical about our first meal in mexico . We tried papadzules , sopas , tlacoyos, which came with 3 dips which were out of the world ! So much flavor experience in very bite. One seemed eggplant , one seemed pumpkin and third we just could tell ! Got a huge lemonade jug to go along ! Amazing and happy stomach start to our Yucatan tour !

Ambiance is great with all the statues and stuff here!! This is a must when doing a tour to the ruins!! Do the cenote ( swim hole) after is a must!!! Oh!! They serve beer and drinks here also!! Food was extremely delicious and flavorful, and there were plenty of options as well. Our server was very attentive as well. Sad to know that this will probably be the only time I'll ever visit, but very glad to have done so.
