The first time I visited a La Romana location was in Torino/Turin. I was afraid they would be closed for the infamous August holidays, but thankfully they were open! I came here with a friend and I ordered a cup of Croccante del Nonna. I was in for a pleasant surprise, as it had crunchy pieces of caramel (I think) with a caramel swirl. It was reminiscent of butterscotch. Another plus about this place? You ask for "piccola" and you pretty much get a little bit more than a small size at Baskin-Robbins. This is not normal for Italian gelato places, so if you want a bang for your buck, this particular La Romana location should be on your Milano eats list!

Check out these "coppe gourmet" (gourmet cups) with the top of the list item containing granola.

I had dinner and, en route to the place at which I ate, I saw this gelateria - La Romana - from the tram windows. The name seemed familiar. I had heard that name before. I didn't realize it's a chain. I sort of assumed it could be a local mini-chain. I walked back to catch the return tram, but after I backtracked to this gelateria first. First, I want to stress how friendly the staff was and how nice the interior of the store is. As for the staff, one can throw away the widely proffered notion that the Milanese are more brusque than in other Italian cities. I had a medium cup of gelato with 2 flavors - dark chocolate and lemon. It was very good. I think Rome's Giolitti has more selection and slightly tastier gelato, but this worked well. I ate it as I walked a little ways toward the Darsena to find the next tram or bus to the Porta Genova Metro station. The price was fair. I also like how, in most Italian gelaterias, they top off the cup somewhat generously. I always get a cup instead of a cone. Cones are nice because you can eat them, but they sure can be messy. They also have yogurt and more to choose from at La Romana. Finally, I noticed that La Romana sold things with granola. The young lady helping me was good-natured and I figured she could go with some humor. I asked her if, beyond it being food, they have other uses of the term "granola" in Italy. She said that she wasn't aware of any and looked a little perplexed, as if waiting for an explanation. I went on to say that, in the States, it's typically people who have to eat organic food, probably like cannabis, might have a thing for hemp, and wear longer and counterculture hair styles. The light bulb went on and she said, "Oh, un po' hippie?" I think she got it! We both chuckled and, having formed a good opinion of this gelateria and seeing that MIlanese service can be affable, I walked out of La Romana with my gelato into the cooler winter evening air and toward the transit station.

Buono eh! Ma non completamente soddisfacente.
