Amazing authentic Italian restaurant located in Buenos Aires! I discovered this place after asking…read moreour hotel where a good place to go eat dinner was within walking distance. The hotel recommended Amici Miei. We walked to the other end of the little plaza and located this cute little Italian restaurant on the second floor with some balconies over looking the plaza with tables. The location is spectacular. Very quaint, old school feel inside an old building. The balconies are small but hold table for 4. On a nice day like when we went (it was about 85 degrees F) was nice to look outside onto the plaza and people watch. As we ordered food, the quality of the dishes were top notch. Everything was fresh and tasted superb. The flavours were rich, not salty, not over/under cooked. All the dished that came out were nice and hot and tasted amazing. The bread served was fresh, crunchy outside, soft inside with butter and some red wine. This place if you didn't know you were sitting in Buenos Aires, you'd think you were in Italy! Service was great, very prompt and nice. As with any Argentine or foreign restaurant, you have to ask for your bill if you want to leave, otherwise they just let you be. Overall, I do believe this place is truly 5 star rating, food, quality, taste, ambiance and service. You won't be disappointed if you go here and the price point is very good for the food, amount and quality.

I arrived right when they opened at 8 and was the only one there until a few people trickled in around 8:30 or so. By the time I left at 9:15, more people were arriving. I'd expect by 10, it would be packed. Before my meal arrived, they brought out a basket of garlic bread, focaccia and breadsticks with a garbanzo bean spread. I also ordered a cold Patagonia cerveza while I waited for my main course. I had green Papardelle pasta with mushrooms, bacon and cherry tomatoes in a light olive oil type sauce. It was very enjoyable as compared to a heavy cream sauce. The only thing missing was some parmesan cheese, which was provided before my meal arrived. Unlike most every other dinner I've had in BA, I left feeling satisfied, not like I was about to burst! The service was stellar and very friendly. Definitely check this place out if you happen to be in San Telmo.

Fabulous vermutaria in the San Telmo neighborhood…read more They offer all sorts of wines, and various mixed drinks. But you would be out of your mind to leave Cafe San Juan without having their homemade house vermouth. I have had house vermouth all over Spain, where many bars do their own vermouth just on general principles. Nothing comes close to the house vermouth at Cafe San Juan. Vermouth in Argentina (and in Spain) is often served with soda and ice as a form of a spritzer. A good vermouth is designed to let the ice cubes open up the taste. Done right, there should be BOTH the taste of the wine and the taste of the herbs and spices. It is hard to pull the spice elements out of a commercial vermouth such as a Martini and Rossi. Many homemade vermouths do worse rather than better than Martini and Rossi on this key aspect of what makes vermouth vermouth. Cafe San Juan's vermouth has the most powerful spice taste of any vermouth that I have ever had. And it is a suave mellow harmonious full taste. Imagine Mom's apple pie or a savory sauerbraten. Having those flavors show up in a wine is a rarity. Having those flavors work in a wine is an even greater rarity. Cafe San Juan's vermouth does all that. * * * This is a full service restaurant as well as a bar. The food is absolutely outstanding. My wife adored her merluzon (hake in English), with lentils and capers. I had an osso buco to die for. American veal is nearly worthless and our beef is only ho hum. Argentina has extraordinary beef - so getting good veal is not too hard. In an osso buco, the basic meat itself has to carry a lot of the flavor. This veal with veal bone did just fine. As for the tomatoes, anchovies and crispy polenta, all soaked up in veal gravy ... Just say no more. This was happiness on a plate. An appetizer of burrata cheese on a grilled mortadella proves a basic point. Mortadella is Italian bologna. There is no way to get around it. Bologna goes from stupid school lunch sandwich meat to pure divinity when you put the bologna in a saute pan, put it on the stove and give it a char. The same applies even more so for mortadella. Even more happiness on a plate. * * * Still as good as the food may be ... You are here for the house vermouth ... The house vermouth ... The house vermouth ... You will have many fine meat and fish dishes in your time. A legendary vermouth is forever.

There were few people for a Sunday, but it was early. I expected to be greeted by the waiter sooner, but I have since learned that a delay in greeting is not unusual in this city. The waiter was very accommodating considering our limited command of Spanish. His command of English was excellent. We ordered a salad to start. Based on the waiter's suggestion we split it, which was a good idea considering how big it was. It was delicious! It has lettuce, beets, pistachios and drizzled with honey. I had the black salmon ravioli. There was extra salmon in the dish. Excellent and generous portion. My friend had the spinach malfatti, which was also delicious. Tipping is not expected, but 10% is appreciated for good service. Our server (Frederico) was great, but never pushed for a tip ( he got one!). Note, that a service fee is added to checks. The fee goes to management, not to the servers. We did not have drinks. The bill came to 2300 pesos. That's currently $38.50 USD. What a deal considering the quality of the meal.

¡ GREAT SERVICE !…read more That's where the superlatives end. The "greeter" was pretty but lost; couldn't answer a single question regarding table service fees or the difference in price if paying by cash or card. Mind you, all questions were asked in Spanish. Nice complementary mimosa or glass of champagne started us off. Enjoyable and varied bread basket. Then we got our mains...The mariscos fritos (assorted fried seafood) were WAY overcooked. I ate them but they tasted more of scorched oil than fresh seafood. The ceviche was the polar opposite, not ENOUGH time spent in the leche de tigre to chemically cook the fish. So we got completely raw (fishy) fish swimming in a citrus sauce. We sat outside by the water and it was pleasant. The waitstaff rotated and was appropriately attentive. Alas, prices were a bit lofty considering the aforementioned deficiencies.

Situated in the Recoleta neighborhood, it's known for its house-made pastas. And, ultimately, yes, I was grown up enough to eat there, although, since I'm not a wine drinker, I felt I was missing out on the total experience. The decor of the restaurant is very elegant with lots of wood. We dined on the second level and were treated to an excellent view of the diners below. Being as there weren't many non-alcoholic drink options I had water. This is one area of opportunity. I would've loved to have something like a fruity cocktail to complement my dish. As an appetizer, we had the Corn Polenta with Prawns. It was an interesting dish with tender prawns and a seafood broth poured over the polenta. Very good. For my entree, I had a very rich pasta dish called Tagliatelle with Creamy Spinach and Ham. This was a delicious dish- let me tell you, the standout was the ham which was very mild and not heavily salted. That dish was a 5/5! For dessert I chose the Panna Cotta, it was a little too sweet for my liking. We also passed on the complementary Limoncello at the end. Overall, I really enjoyed our visit to Sottovoce, the main dish was spectacular, but the other elements bookending the main were a little less than spectacular. Nonetheless, I would definitely return for the Tagliatelle, but next time try a different appetizer and dessert.
