The "decor" hasn't changed a BIT (and I'd swear that was the same Copa match on the TV as before...), but neither has the quality, authenticity, and generous portions of the food, the friendliness of the service, and the unique experience of sharing a great meal in this bare bones super authentic little "secret" spot. These are the places you eat that you would never dream of stopping at. This is DDD style right here. This eatery is in the back of a Mexican grocery store that you would never think of eating at. You grab your drink right from the coolers in the store and then head back to the counter to order your food. They have it all and it is all authentic. We have been here 3 times and have loved it each time. The food is fresh and cooked to order. The dining atmosphere would scare many people off but we find it to add to the experience. The tables are plastic card tables and a mix of folding chairs and such to sit in. They have great sauces and bring you your food once you order it. Every time we have been here, there is a steady flow of locals coming through and eating. So far everything we have had is great. The tostadas are amazing as well as their tacos. Give it a try and don't be scared. They also have an array of Mexican desserts and sweet breads at the grocery counter in the front. Take some dessert home. read more

After a couple of years not making it to La Prob, I was able to work in another visit this week. Much has changed, while much remains as it has been for so long. It's still at the back of a grocery store, though the store is once again well stocked. The restaurant is up to 43 seats now and has 5 or 6 people working, up from just one when I first wrote a review. Service was Speedy, which was a great improvement over my last visit. Chips are no longer comped, but with an order of outstanding chunky flavorful guacamole you get a heap of thick chips clearly made from real corn tortillas. Our gorditas al pastor and burrito with shredded beef were Outstanding - flavorful, not greasy, hot, and authentic. I'm still missing the lime wedges that used to grace the gorditas. Perhaps I'll just start bringing my own. Salsa was in squeeze bottles - a medium red and a creamy green hot option. As always, drinks are cold and in the coolers - sodas and the have beer, too. The clientele was a great mix of Mexican and non-Mexican locals as well as tourists. Atmosphere included two new flat panel TVs showing the World Cup on Telemundo. This place is incredible! Tucked in the back of the grocery store they make some great tacos, tostadas, gorditas, burritos and more. I had 2 tacos, one was their al pastor which they make with fried onions. I've never had them like that before but they were delicious and I could taste the pineapple in it that al pastor just isn't complete without. My other taco was carne asada which was just incredible, lots of meat. The salsas were good, the roja had some good heat and the green was creamy and had a decent bit of heat itself. My buddy had the asada burrito which looked great. This place is getting bookmarked. read more

I love this place. Brings me back to my time in Mexico. Delicious food made in the style I remember. So good. So good. I wish I could bring home some of the green sauce in the squeeze bottle. I drive far out of my way to visit when I can. The atmosphere is perfect for the experience. The minimal decor adds to the feel that you're at a neighborhood restaurant in a friendly town in Mexico. The place needs some work though as other people have not eaten here because of appearance (and why aren't the lights on?) Unbelievable. I was was blown away by the level of service and quality of food. The tacos are some of the best I've eaten. They come with double soft corn tortillas with choice of meat and onions and cilantro. They give you fresh lime wedges and 2 kinds of taco sauces. One creamy jalapeño and one traditional hot sauce. Both homemade and delicious. The other great thing is the really reasonable price for bottles of beer. 2.75 crafts. The restaurant seating is basic tables and folding chairs. The lack of ambience is not a factor when you get to dig into your food. Tip would be bring cash. No Credit Cards are accepted. Best Mexican food that I've had this side of the Mason-Dixon Line! Ok, I have not eaten at many up north but this native Texan has had some good Mexican fare and this ranks highly. I had the La Probadita combo platter and it was ALL delicious. The roasted jalapeño and onions were nice touches you don't normally see, but the salsa verde was too fiery for me. My only criticism is that they removed the prices from the menu board; so expect to pay more - but it's worth it!!! I'll be back!!!! read more

This place is that "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant everyone looks for while traveling but never seems to find--with amazing food! This place operates as a grocery store up front, but the real treasure is the restaurant in the back. I ordered a chicken burrito and a chicken taco, and they both were fantastic. I love it when places make their own sauces, and this place has terrific salsa, and a couple other hot pepper sauces. They aren't afraid to go heavy on the cilantro in their food, so if you're like my girlfriend and can't eat it, make sure to ask for them to leave it off. Also my girlfriend ordered a cactus tostada(yes, that's a thing) and one of the cooks overdid her onions and cilantro topping. Once the head guy(who originally designed the dish) saw it, he gave us our money back for it. Despite this mistake I think it showed how passionate this guy is about getting his dishes right. You stand in line and order at a register. You get your drinks out of the market coolers. Then sit down and they bring your food. When u are done, you then stand in line to pay.
