    Home-made chips and salsa

My husband and I chanced upon this place while on vacation in Pentwater. Great little Mexican joint tucked into the back of a Latin American grocery store on N Oceana Drive, from the road the place looks desolate and closed, but don't be fooled, it's open and delicious tacos beckon! Yay for awesome ethnic food in the ethnic-food desert that is Oceana County! After we ordered, the kitchen brought out two delicious salsas, one smoked ancho salsa and one spicy tomatillo (salsa verde), with home-made tortilla chips. We had some delicious tacos, the carnitas was amazing, the tripe could have been deep-fried a little longer but no matter, it was suitably funky as tripe can often be, and tasty shrimp gorditas. The salsas went wonderfully with the food. On the way out, picked up some delicious and cheap Latin American groceries, including produce, mangoes for $0.65/each, limes for $0.10/each! Great little place, will definitely be back when we're in the area again next summer.

So good! Your typical divey mercado and restaurant in the back. But, one of THE BEST AL PASTOR tacos I've ever had. I eat a lot of Mexican food...A LOT. I love La Probadita and I'm so glad that I came here. Now I have 2 delicious authentic Mexican places in Hart. Tacos and Tortas for days!!! Yummm!

The aftermath.... place is legit. To think we almost judged it by the outside appearance.

This is a fairly typical authentic Mexican-style lunch counter designed for people familiar with Mexican food as it is served and prepared in Mexico. If you were looking for the Taco Bell, this is NOT it. You'll find a full-service Mexican grocery inside this dingy old building. When we came in on a Thursday at lunchtime the husband (presumably Pancho) was sitting outside in the van, and he got out and came inside with us. His wife was mopping the concrete floor. The TV was blaring a Mexican soap opera. Their small child was sitting on the floor behind the counter reading comics. We ordered tacos at $1.50 each. They come on soft maize (corn) tortillas, with cilanto y cebollo (onions). Choices of taco include al pastor, pollo, bifstec, tripa, and others. Excellent tacos, authentic hot sauces served in two bowls, served with a lime wedge. This is not a place to take your prom date, but it is good food, reasonably priced, and if you have ever eaten lunch in Ensenada, Baja California, then this place brings you right back there.

The salsa bowls are about 7" in diameter! Both were quite tasty. The chips were commercial, overly salted, and half crushed, not so good.

Some of the best tacos I've ever had. The last time I had tacos this good, I was in downtown Cancun.

This was the worst mexican restaurant i have visited. They charge for chips and salsa and the food was not good. Avoid if possible

It contrasted sharply with La Probadita in town, which has really fallen off, in that respect.

Finally...a good restaurant on River Street! We're in Manistee about a dozen times a year and I'm…read moreso burnt out on not having good places to eat. If you're looking for good Mexican, skip 'Taco Bout It' (which is very generic Americanized Mexican fare) and go here instead! This place just opened in the old River Street Station location and it's now my favorite place around town. Authentic Mexican food and drink in a very cool "Day of the Dead" style atmosphere. Awesome custom murals and decorations inside. It was totally empty when we walked in at 3pm on a Wednesday (to be expected) so we got 1 on 1 service at the bar. Food was super fresh and made to order. The freshly fried taquitos with super fresh veggies were awesome, and the tequila drinks were solid. I'll go here again the first chance I get. I feel like some restaurants in Manistee think they're fancy but are just overpriced and the food isn't very good (lookin' at you Golden Stag and Blue Fish). Then you have second tier food at Taco Bout It, Fricanos and North Channel. The food at these places almost seem like the quality of "theme park food" (generic and not very fresh). This place, IMO, is a big step forward. Fresh and authentic, probably family-owned (that was the vibe I got), with a great atmosphere (they were jammin' some modern Mexican music videos on the tv over the bar, which is WAY better than places that play ESPN or some political news channel). I predict that, if they can last until summer and have a good business-minded owner, they'll be jam packed all summer long. Or at least I hope so because I want it to be here, and be thriving, each time we visit Manistee!

The food is authentic, unique, and absolutely delicious. The menu is large and has options for everyone! The prices are fair and the portions are large. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The deck overlooking the beautiful river has a picturesque view of historic Manistee, a nice breeze, and is conveniently right across the river from the live music pavilion!

YUMMMMMMM! Looking for takeout food on a football Sunday, we…read moredecided to check this place out based on a friend recommendation. We showed up anticipating placing a takeout order, assuming a short wait, and that's what we got. The neighborhood was a little bit iffy, with bars on the windows of the building, and there was really no parking lot, so street parking only. It's very small inside with an order/pickup Window and no seating. There's a big menu on the wall with pictures, and paper menus to read and/or take with you. The lady working was very very helpful with recommendations, explaining dishes, and helping us to decide what to order. Fantastic customer service. The food came out EXTREMELY fast. I actually couldn't believe it was already our order. We got an array of items and everything was pretty good. We got the Panchita, which was like loaded nachos, and it was good, but being takeout, it was soggy by the time we ate it. The spicy tamales were good but dry, and I would probably try those again. The burrito was VERY good - and the green salsa was delicious!

They came three to an order for only $6, which I thought was a great value. They were a bit smaller than other tamales I've had before, but they were the best ones I've ever had. The masa was soft and not dry at all, and the tamales held together well. The ratio of filling to masa was good due to the smaller size, and the pork was tender and flavorful. These weren't super spicy but had a little kick to them. We were offered a cup of verde salsa, which was the perfect accompaniment. I'm really excited to check out Navarro's restaurant the next time we're in Muskegon. They have been family owned and operated for nearly 45 years, and with tamales this good, I can see why!
