My husband and I don't live here, but we drove 10 miles out our way to stop at Perla Poblana based on the high yelp reviews. We were not disappointed! Fresh chips and salsa greeted us, and our meals were delicious, quick, and cheap. The red chili pork is really yummy, seriously a close-your-eyes-and-sigh kind of experience. I came into town and was craving REAL Mexican food! Well this is THE place! I had the flautas which were not on the menu but they did accommodate! They were soooo good that I wanted to go back the next day for more! Eek! We were in Rochester one night only and went here based on the 5 star reviews. Ewwww...we had the Enchiladas Verdes and the Carne Asada. The carne was beyond tough and flavorless and the sauce over the enchiladas tasted like it came straight out of a can. The chips served while we were waiting were way too salty. The rice was bland and we're sure there must be much better Mexican restaurants in a town of this size. We would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

Had lunch here yesterday. Really disappointing. I ordered a taco plate with Carnitas. Sad, little plate, grisly dry pork and tiny serving of maybe a quarter cup each of rice and beans and a scant tablespoon of guacamole. My girlfriend ordered chili relleno platter and this came with the same miniscule sides if rice, beans and guacamole. Our food bill was $25. What a rip off! When we asked about the serving size of the rice and beans our waitress got rude and told us we were not getting any discount. We were not asking for one, as I had already paid her for our bill anyway. Ridiculous servings, prices and service with an attitude. I wanted to like La Poblana. I've been to La Poblana's other location, which is adjacent to Barlow Plaza (on the Northwest corner of Civic Center Drive and 11th Ave NW). Their cantina-mercado is quaint and makes for a little taste of Mexico "el norte" feel. On first impression, the 37th Street location appears clean, orderly, and welcoming. Notably, there is a festive décor of "papel picado" strewn about that looks as if it might have been hung for some special occasion to which you are invited. Once one is "greeted" ("dealt with" or "handled" are perhaps more accurate for descriptive purposes) by the staff, however, one feels as though they are uninvited guests. Before I comment further, I wish to say that I do not typically write reviews, and I would typically withhold making negative comments unless I had consistently bad experiences; after my girlfriend and I had such a bad experience here, however, I looked at the reviews and noticed that there are others who have had a similar experience to ours. I felt obligated, therefore, to add to the comments regarding the awful service at this place. If I could save someone from spending their hard earned money at a restaurant that seems to not want your business, then I hope that I have done some small service. To our experience, I was again initially inclined to offer up a benefit-of-the-doubt policy, rather disinclined to be categorically against a place in general based on one experience. Everyone has their off day. One person's behavior shouldn't be representative of an organization. Et cetera, et cetera. Well, my tolerance for such things obviously reaches a certain threshold. The server we had was so inattentive, she seemed so entirely indifferent, nay, I would go further and say that she almost seemed opposed to the very concept of doing the job that I assume she was hired to do. This petulance of hers seems so emblematic of an attitude of petulance that one seems to find more and more frequently these days. I guess I really wasn't anticipating encountering someone with such a seemingly jaded and downcast attitude working in a business that wants to portray itself in quite opposite tones. No amount of papel picado can make me feel invited in this establishment again. As for the food: in my opinion the food had no "wow" factor. It is probably acceptable standard fare for people who would like to think they are getting an authentic Mexican dining experience. You can certainly find as good, if not better, Mexican food with better service elsewhere in Rochester. read more

I'm originally from far south Texas - the Valley. I know when the tortillas for the chips are hand made and hand fried. I know when the salsa is out of a jar. I know when the beans are out of the olla and made that day. I know when the tamales are made by hand and have never been frozen. I dream of having one of those poblano chile tamales with a spoonful of those gloriously earthy beans for my lunch. Go. Eat. They charge separately for adding meats to many dishes and sides, so yes, billing is hard to figure. Yes, the staff's English is broken, and with the Spanish language TV, it's a lot of Spanish you're hearing, but it's a place just like you'd find in Reynosa or Nogales or Tijuana. I asked if they could make my burrito very mild and our server, Angel, said yes they could. After delivering the food, he never came back to the table. My meal was so spicy I was unable to eat it. He cleared my plate with no concern that I had not eaten it. I asked for a bill, but no. You go up to the register and he just says "thirty-four dollars." I asked for a printed bill and he printed a slip that just said $34.00. I asked for an itemized bill and then he finally printed one. When I took out my Discover card, he said "we don't take Discover, you have to use Visa or Master Card" There was no attempt to be friendly or professional. After paying, I said I wished he had asked how I liked the food. He said I was the type of person who is very picky and would have been disappointed no matter what they had served me. I paused for a moment and said "What did you just say to me?" He would not back down but kept pouring on the insults. I asked why he would ever speak to a customer this way. He said they didn't need customers like me. I told him I would not leave a tip since he was so rude and insulting. He said he didn't think a person like me would ever leave a tip. I'm still trying to understand why he behaved like this. Apparently no obligation to be civil to customers if he doesn't feel like it. They should fire him! read more

The menu is large with lots of options. The food is incredibly fresh and made to order. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. I used to live a densely populated Latino neighborhood, literally next door to several Mexican and Latino restaurants, and this easily rivals the food I ate there.
