Tasty Burrito, Friendly Vibes, and Tons of Vegan Options! Stopped by Boxcar Hippie for a quick bite and tried the chicken burrito with guacamole and pickled jalapeños. The flavors were fresh, the ingredients felt high quality, and the portion size was solid. Loved the option to customize--mine came split in half, no salt, no seasoning, just the way I wanted it! The staff was friendly and patient, especially with my custom order. The overall vibe is laid-back--exactly what you'd expect from a place that calls itself "Boxcar Hippie." Nothing fancy, but it fits the theme perfectly. What really stood out was their range of vegan options. We didn't try them this time, but the menu had several plant-based add-ons and substitutions that definitely caught our eye. Looking forward to going back and giving them a shot! Prices were reasonable (our total was around $20), and they even call out the small credit card fee on the receipt, which I appreciated for transparency. Although, I normally dock a point for anyplace that charges you to use a credit card. I do feel like restaurants should just setup their pricing with the expectation that at least 60% of their clients will use a card. If you're in Rochester and looking for a customizable burrito spot with good vibes and options for everyone--Boxcar Hippie is worth a visit. read more

This place was a vibe! I visited while in Rochester for the night passing through for work and decided to try it out since it wasn't far from where I was staying. For a weekday night it was not too busy - I was able to get my order placed quickly and waited about 10 minutes for them to deliver it to my table. Stepping foot inside was a cool experience though. The decor and colors, so vibrant and fun - exactly like the name, "hippie" in feeling!! The staff was super nice too. They have recommendations and were very willing to accommodate to any food changes based on preference, something I value and appreciate when eating out. The restaurant itself was not super clean. There was popcorn scattered around since Boxcar Hippie is literally attached to its sister burger spot (which looked fire too!!) and they serve free popcorn. But in the large view they did their best with trying to keep things clean while still allowing guests the ability to relax and kick back, watch sports on the tvs and have a drink in a cool vibe. I enjoyed my bowl as well and the chicken was seasoned really well. Lots of flavor!! I'd hands down visit this place again when passing through Rochester. read more

Ordered a fajita bowl with steak to go and but when I opened my meal, they gave me a bowl with rice, lettuce, pico, overcooked bell peppers and onions only. There was no steak in my bowI. I contacted them immediately after I became aware of the situation, and the girl who answered the phone regarding my order falsely claimed that I had not requested steak or any protein in my meal. The blatant falsehood left me extremely upset as it reflects a person who lacks integrity, accountability, and customer service. Be sure to inspect your food to ensure your order is correct if you decide to do takeout in the future. Updated: The manager? called me back and offered to refund the order to try to make things right. I value it, but I informed the manager that their employees should develop greater integrity and offer apologies, making an effort to rectify mistakes when they mishandle an order, rather than acknowledge the mistake and try to correct the problem. read more

Boxcar Hippie - A disgusting looking fajitas bowl with missing steak that I asked for. - Mexican Near Me - Rochester, Minnesota

This is a solid 4.5 stars review. Yelp still doesn't allow half stars!!! Service was absolutely fantastic, maybe because I stopped by in the middle of the afternoon, but they let me try the meats because I couldn't decide if I wanted the steak or the chicken. The burrito is so big, I cut it in half and took half of it for my next meal at home! The chicken was amazing, the basic fillings were awesome as well. The half star was lost here: there was A LOT of rice, I wish there was more of the other fillings. There was definitely enough meat! Some fellow yelpers thought the price was too steep, I made two meals out of one burrito, so thought it was fair for the size of the burrito. The place is adorable, feels like a place where surfers would go when they are starving to get the largest and most delicious burrito. Will definitely be back. read more

The Cali Burrito! Let me just say this ... this burrito hit the spot! Wow! The size of this was huge and it was jam packed with just the right amount of flavor! You can taste everything was house made and with love. It had French fries, roasted corn, beans, cheese, pico de gallo, and cheeba sauce. Usually it comes with steak but I subbed for chicken. 10/10!! I was a little sad it was $16 but the size and taste but up for my pocket being a little hurt. Would I buy this again ? YES! Would I recommend this for people to try? HELL YES! The green salsa is spicy so heads up if your taste buds or tummy can't handle heat. But I promise both salsas are amazing ! read more

Boxcar Hippie - Cali burrito with chicken instead of steak . - Mexican Near Me - Rochester, Minnesota

First time here. Stopped after seeing a client. This place has a stoner Cheech and Chong vibe. They don't open until noon, while most other lunch businesses open at 11 am. I ordered a chicken bowl and asked for more lettuce and less rice. I obviously got more rice. The price isn't cheap either. $13 plus any little add on is extra. I chose candied Jalapeños and these were extra. The portion size was big and easily 2 meals. I got a chicken burrito for my son and that was also huge. I asked for stickers and noticed they charged $1 each for them. I thought about stopping again but I didn't want another huge bowl of rice. Review 96 in 2023. read more

Was visiting Rochester and wanted to see what they had for vegan options. This place did not disappoint! They had a delicious rice bowl with vegan chorizo. You can also get the same thing in a burrito if you want. The staff were really helpful and friendly. It's a small restaurant with limited seating but they are attached to the restaurant Hot Chip which had more space to sit and also vegan options to choose from as well. read more

Last burrito I got was tiny, barely any steak, $18 for that, I feel ripped off, highway robbery. I have been here many times before and it was only half the size of normal, not exaggerating. It's already a stretch to spend $18 on a burrito, but when it's the size of a Taco Bell $5 burrito that's where I draw the line. read more

Delicious steak bowl. My husband I both liked it. Kids liked the kids bowls. It was a fun atmosphere.

Got the burrito bowl. Very very average food. Not a lot of flavor. Kinda "classic" mn Mexican food in terms of blandness. I would definitely pick qdoba or chipotle over here. read more

Bonsoir tout le monde ! This place is like chipotle and Del Taco had a baby! It used delicious ingredients, especially their yummy sauces! I do think it's a bit ridiculous that charge for EVERYTHING! You're already paying enough, so tacking on $1.50 here and $.75 here really adds up. There hostess was very nice, and helpful. The place had a lot going on, it seemed pretty cluttered and not much space to sit. But, I grade based mai my on the food as I'm more of a foodie. If your food is great, not much else matters! I would definitely recommend trying this over chipotle, and I also like supporting local businesses. À la prochaine ! read more

The customer service was great! I am vegan and this was the best option for me. I get nervous eating at restaurants since the food is normally too greasy for me, but I loved the flavors and textures, and had no digestive issues afterward! I'm excited to come back! read more

The portions are huge! I don't think I've ever seen a larger burrito. Everything I've had here has been tasty and the online ordering is easy and fast! Well done Boxcar! read more

I ordered through boxcar hippie and added instructions to put the sauce on the side of my burrito, they accidentally charged me for the sauce instead of taking it out of the burrito. The manager was SUPER helpful and kind, she offered to remake my food and fixed my order swiftly. The food was AMAZING and the service was great. Would 100% recommend!! read more

Read the reviews and they do not lie. The portions are awesomely huge! Hubby got the burrito and I got the tri tip bowl. I wasn't expecting too much since our last attempt at Mexican good in Rochester was a fail BUT lo and behold, this place has redeemed this city! Flavorful tri tip and lots of veggies, rice, pick de gallo and plenty of salsa. Deeeelicious! I highly recommend. read more

This is hands down the best burrito I've ever had. The flavors are perfect, and the salsas are not too spicy. You definitely get your money's worth. Unlike chain burrito places, they pay attention to detail here. The burrito comes out picture perfect. I have never seen a burrito wrapped more perfect than this. The only negative is once the burrito is gone. But then you remember you can come back for more! They also have a punch card for getting a free burrito after 10. The staff is super friendly and will explain everything if you've never stopped here before. Nice and quaint and good atmosphere. I will definitely be back! read more

First time at Boxcar Hippie Burrito Bar. Parking was plentiful right in front of the restaurant, which is adjacent to another great restaurant, Hot Chip. You walk in and order by reading the large menu above simply by following the steps. You have protein choice of local pork carnitas, citrus chicken, chipotle mezcal steak or plant based vegan chili lime chi'ken thy, plant based chorizo, vegan steak tips or peppers and onions. I ordered the chi'ken thy burrito bowl with an " add on" of Tony's pickled jalapeños. Per the menu, the burritos and bowls come with Bitchin' Cilantro Lime Rice", Hippie Pico, Oregano Pinto Beans and Jack& Cheddar cheese. The food was brought to our table in a large paper bag. The portions are huge and placed into to go containers. This is a great idea as the food was absolutely out of this world good, but too much for one sitting, unless shared. The chip that are served in a paper bag are made on the premises and I couldn't quit eating them. I brought the bag home and ate them throughout the night. They are delicious stand alone and come with red and green sauce which are also homemade. We like to discover new restaurants and especially restaurants such as this that source locally and are scratch kitchens where everything is fresh and healthy options are offered. We will be back as we were impressed with the entire experience. Staff was very warm and friendly and they offer carry out. Looking for a dining experience a bit out of the ordinary? Do you appreciate plant based options? Enjoy eating locally sourced food? This is the place for you to try. read more

Friendly and helpful staff but underwhelming food quality. Limited kid menu options. My steak burrito was disappointing. Some huge chunks of usually chewy steak mixed with smaller ones. SW Chipotle has gone downhill but at least the steak is good and uniform sizes. The queso was served cool, isn't it supposed to be heated up? Cool ambiance including 21 exit signs. Pickled jalapeños were good but a micro size serving. Good location. Don't see many reasons to go back. read more

Buy your meal at the counter and find a seat..food just ok! Expensive for what I got, chips and salsa, guacamole and a beer. Nothing exciting. read more

Good food for lunch. We like the vibe and the flavors. Due to portion size and prices, we split a bowl and don't have to deal with leftovers in the car while we finish our errands. We would prefer they offer half-size portions too as some of us like burritos and others among us like bowls. We understand that a half-size portion would cost more than half the price of the big (usual) servings. We would come more often if we didn't have to share or store the food when we're out and about. Also, when there is just one of us, we don't come here due to the portion sizes. There is sometimes too much rice and not enough greens. So, I recommend this place for people who like to share or have huge appetites and people who like a large bed of rice under their other food. read more

Consistently good food. A little pricey but I'd rather pay a little more and have more of a sure thing...Peruvian cheese sauce is awesome, spicer than what most restaurants would do and a nice option to plus the burrito a bit. Meats are good quality and the rice etc is typically good. This location adjacent to Hot Chip is newer, loved Boxcar even more when it was in combo with Porch (fried chicken place). read more

This was my husband and I's first time eating here. We ordered pickup which was almost ready when we arrived. They provided the correct food items - steak bowl, pork bowl, and chips and guac. In both of our bowls, the rice was completely undercooked which destroyed majority of the taste. My husband ended up throwing away half his meal. The chips and guac were great nonetheless. Overall, we most likely won't ever be coming back here. It was definitely not worth $45. read more

The most friendly burrito joint you will ever visit. The vegan options were such a plus. Love the trendy vibe of the place, can't wait to come back! read more

Way too expensive. We ordered two burritos and spent almost $35 with tax and tip. That's insane.

Moved to Rochester about 8 months ago and was disappointed in the area's burrito options. Happy to say, this is no longer an issue. Love the burritos at Boxcar. Agree it appears pricey and the burritos typically include a lot of rice. However, the burrito portions are large and can easily be divided into two meals (assuming you have the will power not to finish the whole thing, so far I haven't). Pro-tip is to ask for burrito with no rice and add extra beans, jalapeños and guac (rice problem solved). The house hot sauce has a nice kick with a hint of sweetness and is a perfect addition for those that like spice. If you like burritos, this is the spot. read more

A local Chipotle-meets-Taco Jed kind of vibe, and very tasty stuff. A worthy addition to the local shops in town. The burrito bowls are the best, IMO. read more

I was blown away, fast service and fabulous fresh food. I got the chicken burrito bowl. First impression was the chunks of delicious clearly fresh pan seared chicken. And the portion (imo) is enough for two meals. Cute location, fun vibe!! Will definitely be back read more

The pork burrito I got was awesome, excellent cilantro lime rice in it. Friendly efficient service

Friendly staff, cool vibe if not a little too loud for conversation, good food, pretty expensive to go more than just occasionally.
