This place was a vibe! I visited while in Rochester for the night passing through for work and decided to try it out since it wasn't far from where I was staying. For a weekday night it was not too busy - I was able to get my order placed quickly and waited about 10 minutes for them to deliver it to my table. Stepping foot inside was a cool experience though. The decor and colors, so vibrant and fun - exactly like the name, "hippie" in feeling!! The staff was super nice too. They have recommendations and were very willing to accommodate to any food changes based on preference, something I value and appreciate when eating out. The restaurant itself was not super clean. There was popcorn scattered around since Boxcar Hippie is literally attached to its sister burger spot (which looked fire too!!) and they serve free popcorn. But in the large view they did their best with trying to keep things clean while still allowing guests the ability to relax and kick back, watch sports on the tvs and have a drink in a cool vibe. Ordered a fajita bowl with steak to go and but when I opened my meal, they gave me a bowl with rice, lettuce, pico, overcooked bell peppers and onions only. There was no steak in my bowI. I contacted them immediately after I became aware of the situation, and the girl who answered the phone regarding my order falsely claimed that I had not requested steak or any protein in my meal. The blatant falsehood left me extremely upset as it reflects a person who lacks integrity, accountability, and customer service. Be sure to inspect your food to ensure your order is correct if you decide to do takeout in the future. Updated: The manager? called me back and offered to refund the order to try to make things right. This is a solid 4.5 stars review. Yelp still doesn't allow half stars!!! Service was absolutely fantastic, maybe because I stopped by in the middle of the afternoon, but they let me try the meats because I couldn't decide if I wanted the steak or the chicken. The burrito is so big, I cut it in half and took half of it for my next meal at home! The chicken was amazing, the basic fillings were awesome as well. The half star was lost here: there was A LOT of rice, I wish there was more of the other fillings. There was definitely enough meat! Some fellow yelpers thought the price was too steep, I made two meals out of one burrito, so thought it was fair for the size of the burrito. The Cali Burrito! Let me just say this ... this burrito hit the spot! Wow! The size of this was huge and it was jam packed with just the right amount of flavor! You can taste everything was house made and with love. It had French fries, roasted corn, beans, cheese, pico de gallo, and cheeba sauce. Usually it comes with steak but I subbed for chicken. 10/10!! First time here. Stopped after seeing a client. This place has a stoner Cheech and Chong vibe. They don't open until noon, while most other lunch businesses open at 11 am. I ordered a chicken bowl and asked for more lettuce and less rice. I obviously got more rice. The price isn't cheap either. $13 plus any little add on is extra. I chose candied Jalapeños and these were extra. The portion size was big and easily 2 meals. I got a chicken burrito for my son and that was also huge. This is hands down the best burrito I've ever had. The flavors are perfect, and the salsas are not too spicy. You definitely get your money's worth. Unlike chain burrito places, they pay attention to detail here. The burrito comes out picture perfect. I have never seen a burrito wrapped more perfect than this. The only negative is once the burrito is gone. But then you remember you can come back for more! They also have a punch card for getting a free burrito after 10. First time at Boxcar Hippie Burrito Bar. Parking was plentiful right in front of the restaurant, which is adjacent to another great restaurant, Hot Chip. You walk in and order by reading the large menu above simply by following the steps. You have protein choice of local pork carnitas, citrus chicken, chipotle mezcal steak or plant based vegan chili lime chi'ken thy, plant based chorizo, vegan steak tips or peppers and onions. I ordered the chi'ken thy burrito bowl with an " add on" of Tony's pickled jalapeños. Per the menu, the burritos and bowls come with Bitchin' Cilantro Lime Rice", Hippie Pico, Oregano Pinto Beans and Jack& Cheddar cheese. The food was brought to our table in a large paper bag. The portions are huge and placed into to go containers. This is a great idea as the food was absolutely out of this world good, but too much for one sitting, unless shared. The chip that are served in a paper bag are made on the premises and I couldn't quit eating them. I brought the bag home and ate them throughout the night. They are delicious stand alone and come with red and green sauce which are also homemade. We like to discover new restaurants and especially restaurants such as this that source locally and are scratch kitchens where everything is fresh and healthy options are offered. SW Chipotle has gone downhill but at least the steak is good and uniform sizes. The queso was served cool, isn't it supposed to be heated up? Cool ambiance including 21 exit signs. Good food for lunch. We like the vibe and the flavors. Due to portion size and prices, we split a bowl and don't have to deal with leftovers in the car while we finish our errands. We would prefer they offer half-size portions too as some of us like burritos and others among us like bowls. We understand that a half-size portion would cost more than half the price of the big (usual) servings. We would come more often if we didn't have to share or store the food when we're out and about. Also, when there is just one of us, we don't come here due to the portion sizes. There is sometimes too much rice and not enough greens. This was my husband and I's first time eating here. We ordered pickup which was almost ready when we arrived. They provided the correct food items - steak bowl, pork bowl, and chips and guac. In both of our bowls, the rice was completely undercooked which destroyed majority of the taste. My husband ended up throwing away half his meal. The chips and guac were great nonetheless. Moved to Rochester about 8 months ago and was disappointed in the area's burrito options. Happy to say, this is no longer an issue. Love the burritos at Boxcar. Agree it appears pricey and the burritos typically include a lot of rice. However, the burrito portions are large and can easily be divided into two meals (assuming you have the will power not to finish the whole thing, so far I haven't). Pro-tip is to ask for burrito with no rice and add extra beans, jalapeños and guac (rice problem solved). The house hot sauce has a nice kick with a hint of sweetness and is a perfect addition for those that like spice. If you like burritos, this is the spot. read more
