Fried Fish Lunch
Susan C.

Pretty good food. The name implies seafood which they do have in spades. They also have straight up Mexican food as well. We had the lunch specials of fried fish fillets and the combo. The combo is two shrimp fried and two fried filets. The lunch specials are $10.49 from 11am - 2pm. Closed on Tuesdays. You have a choice of two sides. The usual: slaw, fries, salad, up charge for baked or onion rings. The plates are served with tartar sauce, a tasty cocktail sauce and lemon wedges. Our server was in training and doing a pretty good job. Go there.

This is a shrimp cocktail. Was not worth it for as much as I paid it was all watery.

The oysters were good but the shrimp cocktail was not it was very watery. And you can see it in the picture.

I hadn't found a place in San Antonio that makes decent El Salvadorian food until today. I'll have to come back for more of La Playa's offerings, but today I sampled their platanos fritos (fried plantains) and although I would've preferred that they be a bit crispier they definitely are worth coming back for. I opted for the fish tacos, and was surprised that the fish was fried not grilled. I may have just overlooked the description in the menu, but decided to just go with the flow and was pleasantly surprised. They topped the fried fish with a little lettuce, diced tomatoes, and a whopping slice of avocado. The dish comes with a side of rice and a cilantro sauce. All of the above were delicious, and filling! The prices are reasonable, all four meals plus the platanos came out to just over $30, so no complaints there. I'll be back to try more of this restaurant's menu, but for now I'll leave it at a 3-star review and hope for a 5-star experience next time.

Was in the mood for some pupusas so I went here. At first, since I'm in a wheelchair it was very convenient and had 2 spots I can park in, the only down side was the hill but not complaining! When we go in we seat ourselves and within 5 minutes we had chips and salsa! I tried the camarón y queso pupusas and I can tell you I will definitely be coming back! They were less than $3 each and they have specials from 11am-3pm for a meal and 2 sides! The best part was definitely the beer I had it was smooth and not too bitter and it's from El Salvador. An amazing meal for less than 20$!!

I want to give this place a great review for cleaniness, service, and fresh chopped vegetables but not sure I can for flavor of food. They had a large menu with daily specials. My mom wanted to eat some fish so I looked on Yelp for some recomendations in the area we were in and not to familiar with, this came up. The place was very clean. There were patrons inside as we arrived but as we were leaving, there was a line and the place was filling up! Our server was terrific, she checked on us regularly and our food was served in a timely manner. They offer chips and salsa for the table, salsa was passable. My mom ordered Sopa de Marisco (with out bone) and there were no bones in it so that was good but she said it lacked the full flavor of seafood. She also had grilled fish and shrimp, which were ok, but also lacking in flavor. The side salad was made of super fresh romaine lettuce and freshly chopped carrots. The slaw was good, it was made of fresh chopped cabbage that still had a crunch to it and not all over soggy. Their tarter sauce was really good, I even dipped my chips in it! The server said they make it fresh in the resturant. I had a fish taco with fresh chopped lettuce, tomatoe, and avocado. It came with a side of cilantro sauce which was watery and tasteless. However, there was missing from the overall taste of the taco. Couldn't put my finger on it but my mom said it just didn't taste like fish, and I'm not sure what it was but I didn't finish it.

Very good food. They have a very broad menu. Something for everyone. The service is great as well. My waitress checked up on me many times and everyone was very polite and welcoming.

Tienda Centro America - Baleada was stuffed and extremely good the tortilla thick and very tasty. Maybe one of the best I've had so far in San Antonio.

Their pupusas are cheap and delicious and usually keep good if you don't finish them in one sitting. The reason for the loss of a star is the service. The lady handling to go orders has no customer service skills. She stands there, and stares at you while you make your order. She doesn't try to engage and seems like she hates being there. The phones take a while to answer or they don't answer at all. The hours are also very short, with days closing at 7pm. The interior could be clean, but overall is decent enough and doesn't instill any ideas of being dirty. Some restaurants around this area are much less well kept than here! The little mini-market has plenty of little Salvadorean and Honduran treats! They have services to send money back home, a staple you'd see in any Central American store. Overall a great little restaurant, but it could be a little nicer and more welcoming, but delicious food makes up for it.

Unfortunately the food fell short and the service didn't meet the mark. The most surprising thing was how unseasoned the food was. The pork chop was basically the only item that popped with some flavor from seasoning. Everything tastes as if it was just cooked or boiled with in plain water with no seasoning or spices added. The pupusas were extremely bland. The service missed the mark as well. Staff seemed as if they really didn't want you to be there. And there was absolutely no urgency for anything. Dishes came out periodically with having to ask for an update on them. It seems like it could be a lively place but as I looked around most of the patrons were just waiting around the same for their food. Maybe the kitchen staff was having a bad day. Either way I was disappointed because I really had been looking forward to coming to this place but not sure if I'd be back anytime soon. Also the parking situation was a bit hectic.

Pure comfort food like your abuela would make and man it had been awhile, but it sure was delicious. It has that wholesome feeling that has you wanting more. Also, I had had it to-go, but this is really best experienced in person...and less messy. The juices that the torta sits in is out of this world good. Messy for the untrained hand though! I found the torta bread hefty and able to hold all those wonderful carnitas tightly together. It is all so perfect...from the crunchy torta bun, the fresh cabbage, the mouth-watering custom picked carnitas, all the way to the salted lime. I want one now and can't wait to bring friends and family early to the airport so I can make a quick stop here again!

My overall experiences with "triple D" locations is negative. They RARELY blow me away. As a matter of fact, I can probably count on one hand the times I've been impressed. Having said that: This. Place. Is. LEGIT. I'm telling you now - you will not be disappointed if you go a little bit out of your way to try it. This was soooo close to 5-stars, and those reviews don't come easy from me. We had nachos and Al pastor tacos. Everything was fantastic! Neat little joint. Neat little outdoor area. I felt the price was right. My only "negative": location. This place is right by the airport...so although my wife and I had beautiful weather and temperatures to sit outside, airliners made for seriously loud distractions. I kinda felt service was a tad "chilly", but giving the benefit of the doubt here because we walked in at 8:20p when they close at 9p. She was not rude; she was just not overly nice or chatty, which we definitely are. I'm a big fan. Will definitely go back.
