    tamales and chorizo tacos
    Elishevah G.

Oh good god. I might not be able to do justice to how amazing the restaurant inside La Michoacana #4 is. Located near the Billiard Club on Rte. 161, this little gem is tucked away inside a plaza and deserves your patronage immediately. This is the best Mexican I've had since we first went to the original La Michoacana on Morse Rd. over a year ago. This store is small, but it has all of the essentials - from the Virgin when you walk in (we crossed ourselves as we left of course, [guilty] Catholics that we are!), to every kind of merchandise you can imagine crammed into four of five small isles - everything from La Preferida canned and boxed products to a great selection of holy candles, to toys, candy, and fresh made panaderias (sweet breads). We, however, made a beeline for the restaurant in the back of the store, so that we could grab some delicious foods before heading back to the Billiard Club. We ordered two each of pork tamales and chorizo tacos. This is simple, delicious fare that will make you fall off your barstool (eat in - it's fun!) when it hits your tastebuds. The tamales were as good as the boy's mom makes, and that's hard to beat. I'd never had pork tamales, but they were excellent - the mazo in particular was very flavorful. The tacos were just out of control. Each consisted of two baby corn tortilas, softened on the griddle, with chorizo, cilantro, lime, and roasted jalapeno pepper... so simple, so delicious, and so filling. I am not at all doing this food justice with my inadequate descriptions, but check out my pictures, because they'll make you drool. Our friends came by and tried some, and ended up ordering food for themselves as well. I love this place because it's the real deal. It is pretty much the epitome of what makes me happiest in this lil ole world - just people being people, engaging their culture, doing their thing. There's no putting on, it's all completely humble, and it's not about getting ahead - it's about living within one's culture instead of trying to obliterate it in favor of assimilation. America would be a truly more diverse and interesting place if more people rejected the white middle class ideal we hold so dear. La Michoacana is an excellent example of a place that does so, Oh, and... it's beyond delicious. Finally/PS - just as we were checking out with a few more items as we left the store, one of the workers wheeled a cooler overflowing with huge Coronas and ice right next to us. Best grocery store ever.

Service is friendly enough on checkout, but no one ever comes to help. They have what I'm looking for about half the time. I come in more because it is handy in the area than because it is a favorite. Plenty of parking in this rather quiet strip mall. Nothing here that is a big draw, but there are several places worth visiting just to check out, so you can throw this in the mix while you are stopping in some of the other shops. Just don't expect much.

The grocery suffers a bit from inheriting a much larger space than it needs (the former Westerville Market, whose logo can still be seen on the baskets and shopping carts); if Asian Grocery were in a space the size of Luc's or Westgate Thai, it wouldn't feel as empty as it usually does. Asian Grocery has put some of their extra space to good use, now that they've opened Pho Saigon, which is hands down the best Vietnamese food that one will find in Columbus (see my review). Pho Saigon aside, there are things that make Asian Grocery worth shopping at. The produce is generally among the freshest you'll find at the various Asian groceries in Columbus, and as one would expect of a Vietnamese grocery, it's a broad range: various Chinese cabbages, squashes, okra, green papaya, bean sprouts, lots of Vietnamese herbs. If you come in the appropriate season, you can find fresh lychee, longan, mangosteen, jackfruit, and dragonfruit. If you know where to look, there are also things they prepare themselves - plastic containers full of homemade salted mustard cabbage (good for stir-frying with pork), and in preparation for the Chinese New Year, freshly-made Vietnamese rice dumplings stuffed with coconut (see my photos). It's not the prettiest grocery shopping experience, but you can't eat atmosphere, can you?

Fair warning: I come into this review with some bias as Im not a Kroger fan, but this store is…read moreright across from my mothers home so its her go to spot and she wants me to go "here". So I will at least try to not be biased. Their parking lot...- nightmare. I know, I know... but Im being 100% truthful. It has a weird traffic pattern. People zoom around in it. As if thats not enough to deter me from coming here regularly....The spots are narrow, the traffic lanes are also narrow. My biggest objection: half of it is on an incline (poor grading of a grocery parking lot) why donInsay poor? Well, carts roll around down the incline and cars gets dinged. My car has been dinged here from carts and doors when I dont park far far away. Tip: park closer to the mall and walk a bit further... as strangely that part of the center doesn't use carts and some reason they made it nice and level. Go figure. So weird. The store itself... a typical Kroger. This store: Their tea assortment is limited. Seasonal aisle also limited. Their produce is nice, meat/seafood department was just setting up around 9 so we didnt wait to shop it. (Giant Eagles is set up way before 9 btw) My mom went thru full service to check out. I choose self... which I thought would speed things up. Nope. Their self checkout isnt as user friendly as their competition. It took three calls to the attendant to finish the scanning. The attendant, tho pleasant enough still made me feel kind of "judged" by needing her help 3x's. So there was that. The lady bagging her groceries next to me goes. "Psst, I think this self scanning is difficult too and often think "why didnt I go to the cashier"". Me: exactly!!! Im just not a fan. Im the sole care giver for my mother. Time is valuable to me. However avoiding stress is even more valuable. I get stressed at this store. Even though this is right across the street, I think I will drive up or down the road to the competition as shopping at either location is just so much easier than being at this Kroger and dealing with the lot and the self scanner. Jmo.

When I walked back, nothing was put out. Finally someone was up at the counter for me to ask when they'd be open and they said between 12-1. That just seems insanely ridiculous.
