I stop here every time I'm in the area and will make a trip if I need some quick go-to items for Mexican dishes. I speak a little Spanish, and that helps, but everyone can help you if you don't. The store has a decent product selection, butcher counter, and produce given its smaller size. I was making tacos and they had everything I needed including diezmillo de res/bistec. My only complaint is they don't carry the jugo verde I love, but that's a tiny complaint. I haven't yet tried it, but definitely want to stop in and eat at the little cafe restaurant inside the market! If you are in the area, this Mexican mercado is absolutely worth a visit! Pro tip: they have really amazing pico de gallo available at the butcher at the back if you're too lazy to make it (like me). read more

Wonderful Mexican market located in an assuming shopping strip at the corner of Bethel and Sawmill. As you enter, you won't miss the wide variety of colorful produce. Pretty much everything you need is available: herbs, peppers, chiles, cactus, etc. Continue down the aisles and you'll see an array of drinks and snacks imported from Mexican including what appears like every flavor of Jarritos you could've imagined, in addition to a huge selection of fruit juices. Toward the back there's many cuts of meat and varieties of tortilla + tostadas as well as a household favorite: chicharron pork skins. The refrigerator section carried a variety of goods, from fresh cheeses through tamale flour base. We didn't really explore the center aisles that much, but they appeared well stocked too. La Michoacana is the best butcher shop in the area. I like the huge variety of meat. They will cut it to your specification as well. The store is incredibly clean. Similar markets in the area tend to be a bit lackluster with insect control and providing fresh produce. This has never been a problem here. The workers are friendly, and they humor my attempts to order in Spanish. Now, for the reason I took away a point...it's the restaurant. I could drink the salsa that comes with the chips at the beginning of the meal. Everything after that is not my cup of tea. While the food is authentic, it seems to have gone through a flavor vacuum. Some of the better tacos I've had here in Columbus. Located in the back of Mexican market, it is inevitably authentic as can be. I ordered 4 tacos - shrimp, steak, carnitas, and chicken al pastor, all had cilantro/onion toppings. Bill totaled to about $8. The meats were all great, with the steak being the only one I wouldn't order again. Chips were nothing special but the salsa variety was nice. The tacos were a little on the dry side, but were fantastic overall. Would recommend for a quick meal! read more

Best hole in the wall authentic Mexican food in Columbus. Looks aren't everything. On the weekends they have Menudo, you haven't lived until you've tried their Menudo. Their beans and rice are near perfect. Their Shrimp cocktail had the best flavor. We're very happy as being transplants from Central California moving to Central Ohio we still feel at home. The service isn't always the best but it's definitely worth the wait. The food is of good quality so we don't mind the wait. Tonight there was only one server but she was working really hard. She got to us when she could and brought us our food within 10 minutes. So really it wasn't much of a wait. Our experiences have always been positive! read more

Over a year since I reviewed this place and I still love it. My favorite is to dine here and then walk a store front down to Diamonds and get dessert. We went for dinner earlier this week and the complimentary soup was a lentil base and it was great. I also was beaten by some tacos. I was so hungry I thought I could do four tacos? Hahaha, was I ever wrong- there was so much meat in them! Don't worry though, that left over taco was just as delicious hours later (even at room temperature). I was also taken by surprise by the amount of heat in the green salsa, as it was more than the other Mexican place I frequent. Also, at this point I've shopped in the market. Excellent food, Great Value, Imperfect Service Got three tacos (steak, al pastor, chicken) which were all pretty decent. The meat was a little dry; I think Hass and Los Guachos are still a little better based purely on quality. Shame they didn't have carnitas today. But the meat and topping portions were generous, and the free chips and salsa were a really good touch given how cheap the tacos were already. Salsa is really spicy, so be prepared (but you should still try)! The tortillas were the highlight of the my meal: they're corn (or at least mostly corn), but they have these billowy air pockets in them that them easier to eat and handle. Freshly made, and absolutely delicious. Slight issue with the service. Did not get silverware with my meal, which made it hard to scoop up the meat that had fell from my tacos. Also, they did not ring up my takeout portions separately from my dine-in meal, so I ended up paying tax on that. It's not a big deal given the value, but it was slightly annoying. THE MOST AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD in Northwest Columbus. The restaurant (the equivalent of a small Mexican diner) is located inside of a really nice, really clean, very friendly and welcoming Mexican grocery. That's very common in Mexico. The food is absolutely delicious, and the horchata was yummy. I will crave the complementary cup of Caldo de Res (Mexican beef soup) and house-made chips & salsa. So good. The chips were very, very fresh - among the best you will find anywhere. The server spoke virtually no English, so I got to practice my lame Spanish. We did just fine. Here's the thing, folks - this is no frills, not fancy, incredibly authentic Mexican plate meals. Bottled beer and wine are served. Not a full bar. We were the only anglos in the restaurant - everyone else was native to Mexican food (always a great sign). We felt welcomed. It was awesome. The grocery and butcher shop were also awesome. We took home some uncooked carne adada meat (the same delicious stuff as is served in the restaurant), some house-made chorizo, some house-made carnudo (fried pork rind) and some carnitas (slow-cooked pork). So happy... Please - step out of your comfort zone and go. This is an awesome place, right at Sawmill & Bethel Roads. Don't be fooled by the entrance to this spot. The restaurant is hidden inside a Mexican market and it's the real deal. Doesn't get much more authentic than this. Once you sit down you can easily imagine you are in a neighborhood diner spot In Guadalajara. Service is fast and they have a cooler filled with a great selection of Mexican beer and drinks. I had the weekend special Barbacoa tacos which were really good. The fish and chorizo tacos were a step down from the Barbacoa but the fresh salsa had such a kick to it that everything tasted wonderful with that stuff on it!! My wife had the chicken enchiladas. The presentation was really colorful with Avocados, lettuce, tomatoes, rice and beans all covered with Mexican sour cream. Very tasty. And finally we had the banana chimichanga which was terrific! It was a real surprise to the end of the meal all covered with Mexican whipped cream, sprinkles, chocolate drizzle Topped with a cherry! Crazy good. Get to this place. Seems like a lot of delicious places are in the back of markets (Arirang, Lotte,etc.), but that makes sense right? They have fresh food that they cook right there from their selection of groceries right to their kitchen. I found this place from alteatscolumbus.com (best foodie website for Columbus in my opinion) a long time ago, so I finally decided to stop in for lunch. You have to go straight towards the back and turn right into the dining area past the groceries. I debated whether I was going to be seated or going to seat myself; I did the latter since it's pretty casual. The server came and took my order. I ordered the horchata and MIchoacana style steak under specials I believe. She came out with chips and salsa as well as a little cup of spicy noodle soup with beef (don't know what it's called). I think it's just a starter that they have for everyone, but it was delicious! The horchata was a bit sweet for me. I prefer the slightly less sweet versions, but it ended up balancing ok if you're eating spicy food. The steak came with was flavorful but might have been slightly overcooked because it was a little tough. The server didn't ask how I wanted the steak cooked either. I've heard the carnitas and menudo are awesome and only on the weekends. I'll definitely be back to try other things on the large menu and probably check out the rest of the grocery store as well. Well, let's start this off by saying my girlfriend and I love going to ethnic grocery stores and we LOVE it when there is a random restaurant in there to eat at as well. So needless to say, when we found this place so close to our house, we were dying to try it. I ordered some chicken flautas. They were covered in a good amount of lettuce, tomato, cheese, crema, and beautiful avocado slices. The chicken inside the fried tortillas was a little on the dry side, which made me feel like the dish needed more crema. But overall I enjoyed it and thought it was more than plenty for the price. They have a decent selection of beers available to you in bottles. We had a strange waitress, but overall not a bad place. Probably a lot of good food there. When I go back, I would like to try something different because I'm sure with their access to fresh meat and produce, all of their dishes will be great. read more

This is turning into my favorite Mexican joint in the city over Los Gauchos. It's right next to Diamonds Ice cream in the Mexican market which has Inca Cola, one of my all time favorite sodas. The restaurant is small, but very authentic and the food is not doused in cheese like so many other places do. The tacos are just as good as Los Gauchos, if not better. Al pastor is amazing, along with the steak. Chips and salsa they give you to start is tasty- Salsa is mild, fresh and tastes great. Service is quick, the same waitress has always sat on us and I have been the only gringo there each time, so that is saying something. This is hands down my favorite grocery store and favorite restaurant in the city! First, the grocery store has an excellent selection of Mexican goods, all for a very reasonable price. The fruits and vegetables are very fresh, and the snack and drink selections are wonderful. The store has a very Mexican feeling to it as well, reminds me of the time I've spent in Mexico. Next, the restaurant that's hidden inside this grocery store. The food is AMAZING and extremely authentic. After going to another location we decided to stop here for dinner with paletas for dessert. we ordered horchata and al pastor tortas. Went to the restaurant and ordered 18 tacos to go. It was a mix of al pastor, carne asada, and pollo. The flavors were great. They were all served with two corn tortillas, cilantro, diced onions, and you are given more than enough lime wedges and hot and medium sauces. The green sauce, perhaps a cilantro/jalepeno puree was my favorite. For 18 tacos and two Jarritos sodas it was only $30, so the price is very nice, too. read more

Today, while on a short trip to the zoo we decided to stop off here for a bite to eat. Primarily due to the reviews I've read is why we decided this way the place we wanted to go. A previous reviewer stated learn a few words due to the language barrier. The waitress wasn't very fluent in English but did okay. Also per the same reviewer he stated he was the only gringo in the place as were we.. She was very prompt to ask what we wanted to drink. There was two drink dispensers behind the counter and I hadn't noticed them until after I had gotten a coke. She served us both a bowl of soup, to my suprise the ingredients consists of pinto beans, steak, chorizo, hot dogs, and to top it off to mt disbelief pork rinds. Ok I said to top it off, no it was an ingredient and completely soggy. I'm not sure what this may have added to the soup but ok. The soup certainly wasn't bad, which I really think I need to say this. My wife hasn't had a hot dog in the 26 years we have been married. I was absolutely amazed that she even took the first bite much less ate all broth from the soup. The waitress had set a three tiered salsa rack one of the salsas was real hot, one fire roasted and pretty spicy, and the last was an onion cilantro basic salsa that was pretty good as welll. I ordered three tacos and two tamales when we had finally decided on red sauce because it wasn't as warm as the green. She apparently thiught I didn't want any sauce so I git none on the tamales, which was no big deal they were great plain. The tacos I got was steak,chicken, and carnitas. All were ok just sooo much cilantro and onions. My wife ordered the chicken fajitas and it looked really good it alsi came with avacado, lettuce, rice and beans. And to top it all off was the corn tortilla and flour tortillas for the fajitas were both made on the spot just for our meal if not it certainly taste like it. The only negative aspect of the experience was the tortilla chips she sat in a basket for the salsa, they were stale and when you dipped them they turned into an unchewable piece of rubber. When we were done waiting to get our bill paid she brought back 5.00 and I told her it was hers and my wife realized I was missing some of my change 10 dollars to be exact when I brought it to her attention she went and got it and simply apologized for the mistake. Been eating for a while probably go here 2-3 times a month. Not sure why I haven't wrote a review for this place. Maybe because we love it so much we want to keep it a secret. There are a ton of items on the menu, but what we always go for is the burrito con lengua (beef tongue). It isn't exactly on the menu so you have to ask for it. The lengua here is amazing!!!! Describing as amazing is an understatement, it is so freaking good. Its like eating a super flavorful piece of steak that is soft and tender, you chew on it and the meatiness explode in your mouth. Depending on your time of arrival, you will be offered one of two complimentary items: either fresh chips and salsa, or a cup of heary and delicious bean and chicken soup.
