Cool ambience, flavored shots for 30 pesos and reposado for 40 pesos. If you wanna get a brand name such as 400 Conejos, I believe it was 70 pesos. All reasonable prices and close to downtown. Reposado was relatively smooth for its low price. Mint and coffee were my favorites. The coffee flavor was close to Bailey's.(coffee and cajeta were extra sweet) read more

I loved this place. There was great music, very cool decor (cheese graters as pendant lights) and lots of mezcal. It seemed hip and laid back. We tried two mezcal flights. I'd never had a creme version before and while it wasn't my favorite, it was great to try. There was also an open area in the back with a DJ and hanging lights and an old car. It's a good place for dancing. I just loved the vibe there. During our bar crawl of TJ, this was probably my favorite place. And of course, you can snack on grasshoppers. read more

Friendly staff, great decor, and cheap shots? What else could have gone perfectly amazing! This place was pretty intimate which allowed us to talk to the random strangers and mingle a little. Their drinks were all good and pretty stiff in my opinion. But a shot for about 2 bucks and mix drinks for about 3-4? What could have gone wrong? Besides having too much to drink haha. They Also serve crickets here as an appetizer which was a whole new ball game for me. It was my first time and definitely won't be my last. They were crunchy, chili coated and lemon-y. This is one of my favorite bars in TJ... It's located in downtown TJ ( el centro) You might get lucky to find parking near or use a private parking lot for like $20 pesos. I wasn't really a fan of mezcal until I came across this place. If you want to be hardcore then you can sample the pure mezcal or you can be sissy like me and try it in different flavors with shaved ice or in cream style. My favorite flavors are: -Tamarindo ( with shaved ice or raspado style) -Mango ( same as above) -Crema de Mezcal sabor cajeta ( cream like mezcal liquor) They offer very tasty snacks: chapulines ( seasoned fried crickets ) churritos and chicharrones de harina. Don't ask, just try them all! Trust me! If the place is empty then you might not enjoy the jukebox, it can get very loud. But you will love the Disco Mary's!!!! So much fun to watch them change colors. The people at the bar are not very friendly but that's why I like it, it reminds me of the bars my grandpa used to visit in a pueblito in Michoacan, were the mezcal was in barrels and the seats were upside down buckets. Prices are very very decent ;) They also offer beer and clamatos for the non-mezcal drinkers. read more

I give this place five stars, for various reasons, one of which is the fact that it is located in Tijuana's Zona Centro area, or the downtown area for you gringos. It's on la Sexta, which is 6th Ave. right off of Revolucion. Apparently this area is making a comeback and some folks have been talking about this in various articles. I finally made my way down there with a group of friends on our way to the Fandango Fronterizo VII. We got there early about 8 or 9pm and just chilled out with some drinks and snacks. It was a chill vibe, we left around 10pm when the crowd started to arrive. It worked out because it allowed us to take our time and check out the place. I started with the menta mezcal shot, which is the one I stayed with that night. I tried a couple of other flavors as well that my friends were having. I also chased it with beers and churritos and chile. They have a dance area in the back and an outdoor bar area in the very back. They also have a private parking lot in the very back that I don't think many folks know about. I am really behind the curve on this place that opened back in 2009, but it's all good, I'm catching up, it kinda works out, cuz all the hype is gone and it's just an established bar now that specializes in mezcal, which apparently is the next big thing among the gringo crowd. check it out and have fun, then grab some pizza across the street or tacos, it's up to you vato. read more

One of my favorite dive bars in Tijuana This is definitely a go-to destination when one is in TJ I've been reading a lot about "Mezcal" lately; it's becoming popular amongst the foodie community here in the US. When I found out that the great Anthony Bourdain is a fan of this joint, I instantly had the urge to come here. The verdict? Anthony Bourdain has great taste; I can understand why he's a fan. The atmosphere is awesome, the patrons are beautiful, and the drinks are the bomb Definitely try the flavored mezcals. I've had several. I unfortunately can't remember the name of two of my favorite flavored mezcals but one of my favorite flavors is mango; give that one a shot. They also have $1 chapulines!! Chapulines is fried grasshoppers by the way. They normally cost $5 or $10 in the US but you can get it here for only a buck. So yes, this joint will be a regular for me and my homies when we're in TJ read more

La Mezcalera is, as its name suggests, a mezcal bar. That said, it's still a pretty cool destination for a non-mezcal-drinker like myself. First: the atmosphere. The atmosphere is what I loved most about this place. It's pretty minimalist, but there are also glowing disco Virgin Marys on the walls because...why the heck not?! Second: the booze. The real reason people visit La Mezcalera is for the cheap mezcal flights, but I stuck to a bottle of Indio. Third: the snacks. And by snacks, I mean chapulines. For the uninitiated, those are grasshoppers! They're fried and doused in tons of hot sauce, salt, and lime. Don't be afraid -- give them a taste. They remind me of potato chips. The only thing that I seem to dislike about the place is the stand-offishness of the bar staff. Well, that and the fact that the jukebox is too freaking loud (but that's mostly me being uptight and lame). All in all, I'm a fan. read more

I drank three shots of Mezcal in a row and I didn't get tipsy. You know that's some quality booze. It was so smooth; smokey and subtle. I tried the reposado, pina colada, and a pineapple or possibly coconut one. Then there are slices of orange with chili powder to chase away the boozy flavor. The bartenders were friendly and eager to booze you up. They played tons of 80s and 90s music. Nirvana was blasting when my friend and I entered the bar. We went there twice we enjoyed it so much. When we were there Thursday night it was pretty dead; but, the second night was totally popping. It was packed with tons of locals. It was such a fun and good time. Definitely need to head back there for some mezcal and groovy jams. read more

La Mezcalera is one of my favorite bars in TJ. They have a variety of flavored mezcal shots, my favorite one is mango flavor. There's two rooms in total; first room being the main bar with tables, second room is a dance room, and finally passing the second room it leads you to a patio. The patio is my favorite spot to hangout, a socially atmosphere with an additional bar to avoid walking back to he first room. Each room has their own music playing in the background, in which it individualizes the atmosphere. I keep coming back to la Mezcalera for the reason I can go for drinks while avoiding any ratchet mess. read more

One of TJ's best. Given the recent exchange rate it is $3.50 for a degustation of 6 mezcals. Absurd. Dangerously absurd. There are mezcal cocktails, mezcal cremas and grasshoppers to snack on. On the weekends, the large back room hosts bands and dj's and is a raucous good time. All of the Cool Kids come here.
