I ordered a vanilla cake with raspberry filling and chocolate buttercream frosting. It was over $50 including tax, and I was informed that it should feed approximately 16 people (if I recall correctly). I thought yeah, right, because an 8" cake sounds small to me -- like a 2-person cake. But when my hubby picked up the cake, I couldn't believe how big and weighty it was. It was tall, for one thing, and it felt about 10 lbs. I thought -- wow, I hope it's good. And then when we finally ate it, I couldn't believe how delicious it was. I think it was the best cake I've ever tasted. It just tasted really fresh and clean -- like your own grandmother or mother had baked it that morning and they had made all the ingredients themselves (they made the butter and ground the flour and got the eggs from their henhouse in the back, etc.). It really was an incredible cake. I highly recommend. I would go back and order another.

They also do custom cakes, whole pies and even savory foods to take home or for lunch and breakfast. The shop itself is so cute and does offer some seating inside. HOW TO ORDER: *I have ordered different pies (marionberry take and bake, key lime, strawberry rhubarb, cherry) four times over the last two years via the Boise Farmers Market on line interface ( https://theboisefarmersmarket.com/ ) to pick up on Saturday mornings at the Market. *At this site https://www.bakerias.com/US/Caldwell/139446106778836/Black-Kettle-Pies - Black Kettle owners indicate they will deliver for $25 and also that as of January 2021 pie orders are accepted Mon - Wed for pick up at a Caldwell location (5104 S 10th Ave) on Fri morning from 9a to 11a. *On their Square order site https://blackkettlepies.square.site/ they list the following for order protocol pick up times when ordering via that site: Pickup Time & Location Boise Corner of 14th & Spa St. (this is the Farmers Market) Sat 9a - 1p Caldwell 5104 S. 10th Ave. Fri 9a - 9:30a Eagle Farmers Market Sat 9a - 2p Nampa Farmers Market Sat 9a - 1-p Confusing? If I order again I'll stick with the Boise Farmers Market online interface which is very simple to use with pick up Saturday mornings from 9a - 1p as scheduled by you. THE GOODIES: While my hubby and I applaud this hard working couple who came back to Idaho to make pie after retirement from food concessions and event business in California, aside from the Key Lime pie or others like it which have a graham cracker crust we enjoy, we likely won't order their pies again only because they use lard to make their standard pie crust. Lard imparts both a texture and flavor we don't as much appreciate in crusts for fruit pies although it is what my great-great and great grandmothers both used for their pies and so I remember the flavor from my childhood into young adult days too when one or the other of them was baking. Then it worked for me. Now it doesn't. Things evolve. But some people prefer lard in pie crust and if that is your thing then this is your pie because the fillings are tasty for sure. And they have won awards so clearly the crust works for others. We may put the cheesecakes on our radar. BACK STORY: As shared by Ron on a bakers' site. "Our story starts when I was 13 years old. I worked after school and Saturdays in Boise for Eddy's Bakery. That's what started my love for baking. Over 27 years ago I got into the food business as a concession at fairs and special events. Part of our business was making and selling pies on site at the events. We traveled six different state working the larger shows. About 8 years ago I felt a younger man needed to run the pie business so we sold the unit to a operator in California. I very quickly realized I missed doing pies so here we are again. Our main market is internet as well as Farmer's Markets. We have been blessed to win awards for our pies at the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival, The Indio Date Festival in California, the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton California, In 2002 we were written up in the National Geographic Magazine."
