A reliable spot for moules-frites. This is a tourist-friendly place, but crowd looked more local. We called a few hours ahead for a Friday night, which I definitely recommend-- even if the restaurant looks like it has free tables, they'll quickly tell you everything is reserved. Here are the winners: Our mussels (24 euro) served Provence style, with vegetables and tomato sauce, was lovely, but the starter of escargot (20 euro) knocked my socks off. So buttery; the best I've had in a long time, and converted one of my traveling companions. Less thrilling was an average steak (18.50 euro). Disappointingly, the fries that came with our mains were lackluster. Complimentary bread was also okay. Service a bit brusque, pacing a bit slow. Decor quaint, more of a neighborhood feel than fine dining. Great neighborhood for walking around before or after. This is a solid pick for checking off a Belgian must-do.

Mussels - a la Provençal (tomato based sauce) - one of top two popular ones. Recommend!

I'll keep this short and sweet: the best mussels I've ever eaten and a very pleasant intimate experience with friendly attentive service!! The owner greets you when you walk in. I finished my entire bucket of maybe 30 mussels and did not leave a single bite (ordered maison which is a white wine + cream sauce and la Provençal which is tomato based. Both fantastic!) Lots of locals which you know is a good sign. We went for lunch on a weekday and it wasn't too bad for seating. go here!!

We found La Maree via a recommendation from Rick Steves....and so did the rest of the Americans that sat alongside us at dinner. It was a good recommendation - the mussels were amazing. I ordered them classic style with white wine. The fish dishes are also appetizing. My traveling partner ordered the cod and he was presented with a thick buttery lemony cut accompanied by fresh veggies. It was melt in your mouth good. You can see the chef cooking and there's even a leg of a pig chillin' on the counter used for freshly cut charceuterie. If you're here, order wine. I made two mistakes ordering beer...one was ordering a Hoegaarden which is called a "Blonde" on that menu, and the second was ordering a non-alcoholic beer which was a Tourtel on the menu. Don't make the same mistakes I did! Also don't order Leffe as that's also a commercialized beer. You want the good stuff when you're in Belgium!

Little restaurant in the Saint Catherine area of Brussels. A short 10 minute walk from the Grand Place. The weather was good so we sat outside on a quite street. Started with wine and the best Shrimp Croquettes that were so creamy they melted in the mouth. Could have ordered a couple more pieces but we wanted the Mussels. My wife ordered the mussels with white wine and I ordered with white wine and cream. Very good. Large soft mussels. Sitting with people from the International world. Too full for dessert so we said goodby and headed out.

Went to La Marée on our last night in Brussels and it was more than we could have hoped for! We called in for reservations around 7pm and couldn't get in until 9pm - you must have a reservation! The restaurant is very small and quaint. The interior is nothing to get excited over but the overall experience was to die for. The food was delicious and the owner and chef made you feel so welcome and at home. For the quality of the food - it was not a stuffy fine dining experience. It was a little on the pricy side but for the quality of the food - it seemed cheap! Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys seafood!

Read a lot of reviews and I decided on La Marée for my Brussels Mussels experience. La Marée is in a very nice part of the city and there is plenty to do before/after the meal. It is also ver accessible due to the metro station nearby and bus service meters from the door. I went on a Thursday in early August without a reservation. I walked in just as they opened and they were able to accommodate me. I was greeted by the owner and promptly seated. My waiter didn't take long to introduce himself and suggested I have an aperitif and I agreed. Campari over ice was my choice and it gave me plenty of time to look over the menu. I knew I was going to have mussels, but they serve them 4 different ways. I selected their "Maison" version which has white wine, garlic, olive oil, and curry it comes with a side of belle frittes on the side and I asked for a half liter of white wine and a bottle of sparkling water to drink. I was impressed that both my glasses never ran dry because several staff members where always "Johnny on the spot" to recharge my drinks. At one point, the chef came out and introduced herself. I thought that was a really nice touch to the experience. The food ! It was amazing, the broth was just right. The spices were subtle and I was able to taste all of the different layers in the broth. I kept dipping my frittes and bread into the broth. I was also offered more fries when I had ran out, but I opted for more bread instead. I finished my meal by having an espresso. The restaurant didn't take long to fill up and there was a healthy portion of locals dinning here. I was just one of a few tourists dinning this evening. A couple, sitting next to me, was celebrating their anniversary and the kept exchanging gifts throughout the meal. I could also tell that a lot of the dinners that night were repeat customers. I will always remember my experience at La Marée because of the quality of my meal, staff, and ambience. I would recommend it to anyone and I am certain that I will be back at some point in time. Thank you for the great experience

So delicious. Went here based on the reviews during a quick vacation in Brussels. Such a charming place. High quality food without being pretentious. I had mussels with garlic and cheese- to die for. Definitely recommend a reservation for dinner as it can get quite busy. Overall, a great experience.

Not good for vegetarian. Nice service and reputation. My friend said the seafood is nice but not the best. Waiter is polite.

Great classic Belgian cuisine. No fancy pancy stuff, but very honest. This is where locals would go.

Large refrigerated cases faced the street with a variety of fresh fish, shellfish and premade seafood items. In the back the kitchen and food prep were visible and completed restaurant or to go orders were queued at its own counter (though staff would drop off at your table). Prices were quite reasonable comparing them to other restaurants in the more touristy streets. Also the cashier was very friendly with both locals and visitors. My favorite was the razor clams followed by the mussels and fish soup. Each was nicely seasoned and good size/ meaty for the shellfish. A separate bowl was also provided to hold all the empty shells. The WCs were located down a spiral staircase in the rear of the restaurant and was tiny. Overall a great start to my eating in Brussels.

I loved them both, but since I was not sure I would ever get to try the Dutch style in my life-time and despite it being a bucket list food, I was so enormously grateful. Even more grateful because it tasted amazing. I plowed through more than one I must admit. I might never get to try it again so I had to get more than one. Don't judge me. LOL. Anyway, the lady that helped me once I had one of the pickled and one of the cured ones was very patient and very kind. She seemed genuinely interested in what I thought and listened to me as I gushed like a fan boy over their products. I will never forget that and I was very appreciative. The place is pretty close to central, downtown Brussels and it was nice to just go to a table out in a courtyard and enjoy one of the favorite things I had on that trip. It was awesome.

Even though there were no seats available we switch gears as soon as we spotted this place, planked our elbows on the bar and got down to businesses testing some of the exciting tapas items on the hand-drawn menu. I had been in Brussels for over 24 hours and had yet to have anything fried, so fried was on my eating agenda. Cod fritters and fried mussels (which neither I nor my Brussels-born companion had ever seen) sounded like the perfect late afternoon snack to accompany our chat (as well as a glass of crisp white whine, what the hey?!). Since our spot at the bar was smack in front of the outdoor kitchen we were able to see everything prepared before our eyes. The mussels were steamed on the grill to get them out of their shell, then each one was coated in a light bread crumb mix and fried up fresh. Served with homemade tartar sauce they were beyond perfection: juicy, slightly spicy, crisp. The cod fritters were equally delicious in their tempura crust, but the mussels stole the show for sure. Who knew that you could have an authentic seaside experience in the heart of Brussels? Not me! But now that I've discovered this place you can guarantee I will be back every chance I get!
